Yep. In fact they almost split up, after their album they were working on before AI was stolen. If they didn't do American Idiot they would have ended much like Blink 182 did.

When they were recording AI they just had fun. In fact the two long tracks (Jesus of Saburbia and homecoming) were made by just having each band member make a short song. And they had fun which helped them come back together as a band.
