I saw this a long time ago, whenever anyone mentioned the boy who cried wolf story I couldn't help but laugh out loud because I could not reframe from thinking about this cartoon lol
Can anybody understand what the grasshopper is saying? I'm subtitling this cartoon for course at my university and I just can't make out what the grasshopper is saying/singing/humming. Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry, but the grasshopper never said anything. It was the ant who talked. The grasshopper was just singing some kind of song. Unfortunately, his words were not easy to understand. You may just have to put in brackets: [Grasshopper singing]. Best I can suggest. ;)
I know, I was referring to the singing part. A friend of mine (and native English speaker) eventually found out that he was singing a few lines from "Heaven can wait" by Dean Martin.
But thank you for your reply, anyway. I am pretty sure your suggestion would have worked, too.

@senetiinsanity What the grasshopper was singing was "Working can wait, this is paradise.." it was a song in a Warner Bros, cartoon with Porky Pig circa 1938 based on the same Aesop "Ant & the Grasshopper" fable. Also, what made this cartoon was the War Time humor Freling freely injected like
Thank you for your help. I noticed the war time humor, too, but having been born in 1988, I hardly had any contact with the really classic cartoon stuff. Unfortunately , I already had to hand in my assignment in February. IMDB listed the grasshopper song as "Heaven can wait" by Jimmy van Heusen and Edgar de Lange, so I went with that. Still, thank you very much for your help.
@Mr76Yearsago It's actually "Porky's Bear Facts", basically a reworking of the ever-famous fable, with a bear in lieu of a grasshopper, singing that very song, made in 1941.
Starling Films' version, renamed "Funny Fables", has its WWII references updated. The war bonds bought by the grasshopper were turned into lotto tickets (with an obviously cheap photoshopping process), and the pile of aluminium destined to National defense became a recycling bin!
@rydag11 That's because Mel Blanc did all the character voices through the years from back when it was Merry Melodies, then Looney Tunes. Very talented man.
Because you weren't supposed to hoard "rationed" food supplies during the war, 'Kartoon'- that was a sign of being greedy and selfish at a time when very few people had meat, butter, eggs, and other "basic" staples available, due to "our boys" overseas receiving the majority of those foodstuffs (note what "Mother Hubbard" has in her cupboard)...
I do too. It makes me laugh when the kid jumps up and yells to his mom to be careful of his corn. I've never had corns before, but I bet they are extremely painful.
Originally released in August 1942, with topical references to "War Bonds" {be sure to get yours at this theater!}, aluminum (and other metal) drives for national defense, and "food hoarding"...
I laughed my butt off at the Sleeping Beauty one for like 5 minutes! XD

That boy yelling sounds a lot like an early Bugs Bunny yelling. Must have been Mel Blanc.
