To give an example, in the late 80's everybody was listening to Motley Crue and Skid Row. In the early 90's, it was Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Big difference in lyrical content and musical composition.

Second, the 80's gave us Jane's Addiction, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Pixies, and also Pearl Jam and Nirvana (who idolized Pixies). Just because you didn't catch on until it became mainstream in the 90's doesn't mean these bands weren't around and popular in the 80's. And 80's New Wave bread Alternative in the 90's, Ask any of those bands who they molded themselves after.
