  • "Unfortunatery, your days are numbered."

    "Did you say, 'unfortunatery'?

  • At 4:18 we get Chubby Joker, looks like the 'I CAN HAZ CHEEZBURGER' cat :P

Kinda funny but not really suitable for a Batman game, very glad they changed it.

  • At 2:30 we get this glowing bit of 'Engrish'

    "Unfortunatery, Your Days Are Numbered."

Should've used cutscenes from final and the story from prototype, that would've been awesome. But what we got, in the end, was the far superior product. You play the game to be BATMAN not to read or care about a story. It is whatever, right? :P

  • @jcdenton2k:

Batman should've borrowed a page from Ryu Hyabusha and done the '...' or the 'What the...!?' bit

    :)

  • I might have to adjust my BatDance Editor to be able to edit this rom! :P

  • 2:29 - "UNFORTUNATERY"

    RO-F-L!

  • I see "specyal" is still there. :D

  • Really amazing to see. The cut-scenes integrate with the levels quite well, though the ending is strange.

    Thanks a million for posting!

  • Ok, I know 2 of the bosses are Killer Moth & Electricutioner, but who do you fight in place of The Joker?

  • @nothingtolookat

No one. There was no Joker fight in this early version.

  • This ending is kinda funny, but not as funny as batman full on fuckin MURDERING the Joker at the end LOL

  • 1:15 Everyone are in Gotham City GENIUS.!

  • Why the joker was made green and no white? it looks extrange

  • @yusukeelric NES has color palette limitations.

  • Awesome!!! How cool is it to see these after so many years of seeing the old ones, which were epic in themselves!

  • Seems very much like Megaman to me... *shrugs*

  • @xxDarkHeartxx731 This was modeled after Ninja Gaiden. Coincidentally, the NES sequel was modeled after Megaman. Search for "Return of the Joker NES."

  • @DRAGHICIIONUT you're an idiot.

  • Oh yeah, "She's in Gotham city." Way to narrow it down. Punk's lucky Batman didn't corpse him up for being a smartass

  • I'll take the finished version over this one strictly because of the way it handles the ending. And has a Joker boss fight.

  • So why did they make the changes the cutscenes? I thought these were way better. Were there pay disputes or something?

  • 4:17 - Joker's facial expression is downright hilarious here.

  • Actually these are pretty good, i just think that the part where it shows joker falling shouldve been the last scene or something like that

  • I live in Toronto Canada.I swear the cutscenes are different from the version i played. Joker falls off the tower in the NES version i played.

  • @mmartino2 Read the TITLE of the YouTube video. It's a PROTOTYPE. That means it's an incomplete, early version.

  • Have you noticed how many of the pictures in these cutscenes are translated panel-to-pixel from "The Killing Joke"? Maybe that had something to do with these being unused - some kind of licencing issue with DC Comics...

  • the only thing I don't get or like about these is when the crook says the viki's in gotham city, they make it out like Batman's never been to gotham before. Uh, he's Batman, he was born and raised in Gotham, batman started in gotham. It makes no sense, other than that though, these are cool

  • Strange, somehow they made Batman as if he heard of Gotham City for the first time. Also the intro somehow sounds like Gotham was "deserted" even though it is a living and breathing city (with high crime rates). Anyways but the cut scenes is actually much better than the released version, at least they try to tell a Batman story.

  • @hanchiman The final game also says "deserted." Maybe they meant to imply it was deserted by law enforcement?

  • @jevansturner

Hahaha, damn I totally forgot my comment in this video :D, also in 4:17 is it just me, but don't you think Joker looks like that "Happy Cat" from icanhascheezeburger site?

Anyways hope Arkham City is worthy as a Batman game.

  • @hanchiman

Yeah, It's hard not to laugh at 4:17!

  • The music...... my ears are bleeding.

  • 4:27 credits should have rolled under the picture while that music was playing. would have been an epicer ending.

  • 2:29 "Unfortunatery" engrish lol

  • is that shredder with fireballs fighting batman for the joker at the end?

  • @WallKenshiro In the cutscenes, he looks EXACTLY like Jacquio from Ninja Gaiden (NES).

  • Wow, this game brings back many memories from my childhood. Thank you for uploading these beta cut scenes!

  • Wow. this is really interesting!

  • "My welcoming committe is here to greet you". I just love the cheesy dialogue in the cutscenes of these old games. Considering the NES version is very LOOSELY based on the film, I wonder why these scenes didn't make it into the final product, I know I'd love them as a child! This stuff was our "reward" for making it through the levels

  • ending = epic lol ... it was lame. I assume they didnt have the memory or something for all the cut scenes

  • if they had so many good cutscenes, why did they cut them? Did they suddenly lose the rights to the movie characters and have to modify the game?

  • Some of these are better then the ones that made it to the game...

  • I don't get why Batman seems confused about the whole Viki being in Gotham thing

  • If you ask me, these should have been used in the final version of this game. At least this version gives some actual story. Because in the final version there is not much dialog between the characters in the cutscenes.

  • Joker leads Gotham City?

  • The cut-scenes are just awesome, much better than the included in the final edition

  • How would Batman not know that Vicki was in Gotham City? Dosen't he freakin live there!

  • i think the part were batman kills jokers sub boss and he creeps back and punches the joker BUT

they should of kept the joker boss battle though

  • The dialogue is so cheesy, lol.

  • "Where's Vicki?"

    "In Gotham City...""

Duh? 0_0 (The full text is supposed to be Gotham City Hall)

1:51 Scariest batman face, as if he's gonna eat her when when she mentioned the chemical plant.

  • Shredder what are doing here :P

  • @pawel1818 He wondered onto the wrong set

  • They should have kept this in the game. It wouldn't have made the game feel so random.

  • Its cool that Batman doesn't fight with the joker. but it would be cooler if batman tossed joker down that building xD

  • Unfortunatery, Sun Soft failed to spell check! 2:31

  • What you expect? Its a prototype after all lol.

  • I more agree on the fact that the joker punch cutscene and the first one for a back story did fit. if the punch scene led to the joker fight would add to it as well as the first scene for the level. otherwise they were not worth keeping in.

  • Wow. Who knew? Anyway, it's kinda cool, though.

  • Does this remind anyone of Ninja Gaiden?

  • Absence of fight with Joker is bullshit!

  • It would be cool if a mod combined all of the cutscenes of this version along with the ones from the retail version (As well as the Joker fight)

  • someone should do a mod that combines this version with the final version

  • No fight with the Joker? That sucks ass.

  • Comment removed

  • 3:45 did that guy just do a nazi salutation??

  • I wonder if the bonus point power-ups actually served a useful purpose in this version. It seems like they didn't do anything in the final version, didn't lead to extra lives, though the infinite continues would've made extra lives redundant.

  • (**4:23.**.).;

    "Falcon... Punch!...".

  • (**2:20-2:35.**).

  • where is vicky?

    she is in gotham city.

gotham city? well we arent exactly in metropolis arent we?

  • This version makes sense with the sequel "Return of the Joker"

  • so you never get to fight the joker in this ver?

  • no i guess in this version the final boss is Firefly

  • This is kick-ass bro'. But I prefer the ending of the actual game. How'd you get that? Love the upbeat track after Batman punches the Joker! But what about that Frankenstein color Joker has at 2:21? And the thug says, "She's in Gotham." The F is that? Of course she's in Gotham! But Batsy is like, "Gotham? Well that's new to me." WTF? That's a no-brainer, Batface!!

  • This is fucking superior. Even if I, admittedly, really liked/like seeing the Batmobile in movement (as shown in the cutscenes of the released version). But this... How the cutscene connects to the first stage...! It's so awesome. Let me clarify.

We see a detailed Batman flying down in a cutscene. The next thing we know, we see him flying down in the actual game, and we can start playing immediately. It's almost seamless, and makes the game feel more well made.

  • I agree. I don't understand why they would take these cut-scenes out of the final version. This version is better.

  • damn, those are some of the best ive seen on nes, why did they change it?

  • OMG, I never seen this before

  • OH NO! It's you!

  • Wow, it is like Vicki Vale and The Joker look like the "movie" versions, but Batman looks like from the comic book, until the end when he meets up with Joker, then it looks a tad like Michael Keaton.

  • My gosh, I remember this game so well... Never understood why Batman used to wear such an awful purple suit ;p

  • lol

  • Batman looks... so old...

  • Wow, the end was really abrupt. I do have to wonder why they changed the cut scenes so much though (well, besides the strange language and engrish).

  • 2:21

JOKER- Welcome Batman, I have been specting you

    BATMAN- : |

JOKER- Unfortunately, your days are numbered

    BATMAN- D:

  • hehe, you mean Unfortunatery! LOL!

  • Lol, that's right D:

  • @omarsattack lololol

  • perhaps the cut scenes were dropped because of cost-say going down to a smaller KB size rom chip? Or better to use the memory for a final Joker fight instead?

  • No, the cut scene chosen for the Gold version are taken by the first movie of Tim Bourton, the final boss is Joker imself and after is defeat the final scene is the same scene of the movie, Joker fall from the tower and die.

  • this was an awesome game

  • ONE!

    PUNCH!

  • That was much better than ordinary version. But there is no Joker as last boss.

  • Very cool!

  • Thoses color things are simply NES limitations.

  • 4:17

its like the kid from ronald mcdonald and the burger king

  • Cool. Kinda like Ninja Gaiden.

  • Yo those cutscenes are nice why they takem out!?

  • those cutscenes sucked a lot. i dont remember the pseudo-batman final boss. this version's gotta be fucked up.

  • Thanks for sharing. With this unused ending; Batman: Return of the Joker makes a lot more sense.

  • Something odd about the other American "beta" of this game. It switched around the music for levels 1 and 2, like in the Japanese version.

  • OH NO! ITS YOU!!!

What are you worried about Joker? You have a gun as big as a yardstick and can summon lightning from the heavens.

  • what a shitty ending XD

  • exelent game!

  • Whoa... lots of things are making sense now. Thanks for sharing this video of one of my favorite NES games =D

  • bob, gun

  • "Where's Vicki, do you know?"

    "She's in Gotham City!"

"Gotham City? OF COURSE SHE'S IN GOTHAM CITY! NOW QUIT FOOLING AROUND!"

  • Also, A+ to the ending:

    FALCON PAUNCH!

  • iam 19 year and i still love to play old games

  • The ending here is more faithful to Batman in general but unfaithful to the movie this game is based on.

  • 0:28

    Oh god, it's Bush!

  • thanks for this, great game.

  • your right, it makes a lot more sense with these cutscenes.

  • don't even get to fight the joker, eh?

  • Yes in the finished version, the best ending of the entire franchise, too bad it wasnt in it cause that ending was awsome

  • Are these really the cutscenes from the prototype version of game? Cool!

  • Yep!

  • I had this game, but alot of these scenes ive never seen, the one that sticks in my head is the batmobile screaming along and shooting down the chem factory doors, looked and sounded great! Though this one looks different to the one i had, was there more than one version of the game?

  • This was the Prototype or Beta Test to the game that you played, basically a somewhat-completed version that's meant to be played by internal testers in order to feel what more needs to be implemented and what needs to go bye-bye.

In this case, the cutscenes had to be closer to the movie and had to look better, hence why this is different from the game released in stores.

  • ahh i see, ok well thanks for that :)

  • If you like Batman or the NES, this is a good one:)

  • perhaps changed the story to be more faithful to the first film?

anyways that story have a bad ending...

  • the joker got falcon punched at the end :o(

  • try saying Batman Punch

  • I'm guessing that the reason they removed the cut scenes is because it interupts gameplay a bit too much.

  • The Batman on Cinema Displays looks like the Batman in the Allan Moore's Graphic Novel "Killing Joke". Coincidence??

  • @xalisquillo no. supposedly, the cutscene graphics are based on the Killing Joke novel.

  • the cut scenes are awesome for an NES game!

  • I LOVE this game!

  • That was awesome, but the post-Axis Chemicals scene is so fucking funny

"Welcome Batman, I've been expecting you"

    "Hmm.."

"Unfortunatery, your days are even numbered"

    "Eh? The Joker speaks Engrish?"

  • How 'bout the first one?

"Where is Vicki, do you know?

    Where is she?"

    "She's in Gotham City"...

    ....*cracks up*

HAHAHAH! Oh, WEEELLL, I certainly wouldn't have looked there first! It's only WHERE I LIVE!

  • cool

so this is \what the game woulda been like if they never made the movie

  • WTF? You don't get to fight the Joker at the end? Good video thou thanks for uploading it

  • Thank you for upload! I'm very interested about games based on Tim Burton's Batman. :)

  • The Intro Music on the starting screen was lame, the cutscenes i thought were very well done graphic wise, but the dialog could have been better, and the ending was awful, the real ending is way better.

  • quite a lame ending, the other one is a lot better.. all that just to see that punch? honestly, why no fight with joker? he was twice the threat predator was or maybe 3 times. batman nes prototype is very dissapointing

  • All that just to punch Joker? I prefer the other end

  • oh thank god they did not have all these cutscenes, what an anticlimax to not have the joker as final boss!

  • They should have kept some of the cut scenes, because the game shows Vicki Vale for no reason at all and does not show that she was kidnapped. The should have kept the cinema screen of the Joker introducing his lackey, because that looked awesome, then skip to the ending on the actual game after beating the Joker.

  • the joker looks good in green

  • Nevermind about the skipping by pressing jump...I realized my controller 1 and 2 settings were the same.

  • I tried playing the prototype, but pressing the jump button makes the game skip ahead.

An observation on the differences, I think they changed this stuff because it looked too unlike how the characters do in the movie.

  • Hmm, maybe you don't fight Joker because they didn't finish that part or something. As for the cut-scenes, they're better here, but Joker looks hilarious at 4:19...just not quite right.

  • it,s me or in the cinema display this Batman is drawed similar to Brian Bolland

  • I have this game & prefer these cutscenes you showed & you're right it does make the game more interesting

  • I could never make it past the 3rd boss w/o cheating with the Genie. And WITH the Genie, I had my hands full with the game play. It's still very unrelenting. Awesome music and graphics though. I was just beside myself with how cool it all looked.

  • The bosses in Batman are sometimes cheap, especially the Joker. For the third boss, just gather some ammo in the stage by killing ennemies. When at the boss, stay in the middle of the screen, and throw him your boomerangs. Do it quickly and he will die before you. It's a slugfest. I know there's a pattern for him, but I always use the slugfest option :)

  • No kidding about the Joker. One shot takes 3 life bars. And he calls down lightning. Let's not forget my most hated damage taker is collision. How come no enemies take damage by running into Batman?

  • SunSoft always made kick ass BGM for the NES games. This game, Batman: Return of the Joker and Journey to Silius have bad ass BGM.

  • very wordy... almost Ninja Gaiden like. disappointed that there was no Joker vs. Batman fight at the end.

  • Was there any story or news on why these scenes were cut out of the final version!?

  • I don't know. What I think is that SunSoft developped the game before the movie was completed, and maybe after that, they were told to change the story to go along more with the one in the movie. So they just added random scenes with quotes from the film. Just a supposition...

  • The intro theme is badass such kickass beats! I wanna download that!

  • Holy crap! I had no idea that one of my beloved NES games like Batman had some cut scenes cut away. I like this version better.

Except, I would have the fight with Joker than cut to the scene where Batman punches him.

    Great vid man.

  • I think the same too. Like that, the game actually have a story. In the final version, you basically have no story, just the Joker throwing some lines here and there...

  • HA! Green Joker rules.

  • this one seems little harder than the non proto

  • A lot of the graphics on these cut scenes were actually pretty impressive, although the tone is a little different.

  • i cant finished this batman i m cant completed stage 5 damn very hard XD

  • That's pretty cool except that it's lame you didn't even get to fight Joker at the end. And nowhere did he ask, "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?"

  • I though maybe the game was developed before the movie was finished or far in the production. So SunSoft had to change a couple of things.

  • lol the way that the prototype ends the game actually sets up Batman Return of the Joker a lot better. There is no way in hell that the Joker would have survived the fall from the final NES version. It all makes sense now :).

That being said, I much prefer the climactic battle for the final cut.

Thank you for sharing this, BrYaN5555!

  • It's pretty awesome how the ending is just Batman punching Joker in the face. The end!

  • They put a lot of typos in there

  • No, in the prototype, you don't fight the joker at the end. It ends just like in the video.

  • Not to sound stupid, but do you get to fight Joker in the prototype or does it go from fighting Firebug to Batman punching Joker?

  • First ;) COOL VIDEO!!!
