i must point out a fact that opening the cylinder cocks do not help the loco what so ever, they reduce the tractive effort of the loco reducing power. The cylinders cocks are there to let water out of the cylinder's so hydraulic action dose not take place damaging the cylindas.

Luke, what works for the standard gauge does not necessarily scale down to the miniatures. You and Big John both need to understand this.

Miniature engines are a LOT less forgiving than full-suze locos, and are a lot coarser to control, indeed that engine only has two notches in either direction, and a small range on the regulator, so OF COURSE I want less tractive effort, because I don't want to overcome the friction between wheel and rail and slip!!

Nature does not scale.

Of course I know what the draincocks are supposed to be used for - I've been doing this sort of thing for long enough!! :)
