My all-time favorite 'girl singer,' and this is one of my favorites. Reminds me of the days I went nuts over men. Glad them days is gone but I still remember the ache.
Nancy Wilson should never be discounted like a clearance item. Sarah has her groove with many gems musically and this is a big big world. I "Liked" this pearl.
Nancy WIlson should never be discounted like a clearance item. Sarah has her groove with many gems musically and this is a big big world. I "Liked" this pearl.
@Laydiegodiva Finally...someone's got the right idea. However, if you listen to Amy even closer; you'll hear a little Ella, and a piece of Sarah all wrapped in there somewhere too. Great observation:)))
And I might add, Nancy Wilson is one of the greatest Jazz singers of alltime. There's no need to slag her off. She was influenced by Dinah Washington and Jimmy Scott, but she has many of her own classic recordings. There are some songs that she owns, just like all the greats. For example Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's 'Lush Life' is associated with Nancy, just like 'I've Got You Under My Skin' is forever associated with Sinatra. This recording is one of Dinah's masterpieces. Peace to all!
@bolder2009 I agree! Every great singer has their own version which cannot be touched by anyone. Billie and Frank have quite a few of their own "can't touch this versions". To me only Nancy can sing"Guess Who I Saw Today" And only Dinah can sing tnis song!
Gloria Lynn-"I Wish You Love", Dakota Staton-"My Funny Valentine", etc. etc. etc. I could go on but we all have our favorite versions. And Nancy is a class act!
@early60srcool In my opinion Dinah has quite a few... What a Difference a Day Makes, I'm Mad About the Boy, I Was Just Telling Him About You(my personal favorite). And Dinah didn't like anyone else sing them. LOL Ask Patti labelle...
@zamusicza Get Out! Was there a little riff between Labelle and Dinah? Dinah has another song Only she can sing,"This Bitter Earth"! I'm listening to Dinah right now singing, "Drinkin' Again" and got a shiver in my soul! She was something else! I am sooooo glad there are recordings, film, etc. so people can hear what a superstar icon sounds like!!!
@early60srcool Early in Patti's career she heard that Dinah was going to attend one of her concerts. Dinah was and is an idol of Patti's. So Patti, in tribute, sang a couple of Dinah's signature songs. Then Dinah was asked by Patti how she like her renditions. Dinah gave her a few smacks to the face, pinned her against the wall and said don't ever sing my songs again. The story is WELL documented and to her credit Patti tells the story with love. LOL Dinah took no crap.
07/27/11 WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER, I GOT TO BE IN THE SAME STAGE WITH THIS AMAZING PERFORMER IN AN AMATEUR HOUR PROGRAM. SHE IS MY FAVORITE BLUES SINGER WHO KEEPS ON THE ORIGINAL MELODY AND NOT LIKE THE OTHERS WHO VARY WITH THE LYRICS. THANKS FOR POSTING. roselli

I dearly love dinah but nobody in the world can ever say that Nancy Wilson sucks. Every artist has there signiature tune, and Nancy was just giving respect to Dinah (born Ruth Jones from Alabama)
I dearly love dinah but nobody in the world can ever say that Nancy Wilson sucks. Every artist has there signiature tune, and Nancy was just giving respect to Dinah (born Ruth Jones from Alabams)
Im a new comer to this music but i absolutley LOVE it. I can no longer stand what is being plugged into our heads from the industry. We need to break free and here is my serenity :))
I wholeheartedly agree about "breaking free". I seldom listen anymore to "new" music be it pop, country, rock or whatever because I have realized that there is such a bountiful portfolio of recorded music from the 1920's to the 1950's (the period I paid the least attention to) that I want to hear the best of IT before I move on to present day music. This artist, Dinah Washington, is a great example. I had heard little of it. What a loss if I were to ignore it !
@grammasharrona wow my mom & grandparent saw her too... they told me they had to sit upstairs in those days... My dad said as a military boy they was warned not to go to the places where she sang sometimes.... Of course they all went & had a good time... NOW that Historic... when they all hear her voice ythey get a shy smile face on their faces..... I was conceived to her music!!.Of course I went to her grave & left flowers....
I'm speechless! Even as a little girl (I'm 59 now) I felt the power she displayed and the sorrow she shared about maybe the only man she would ever love. In my child's mind he was a low down dirty dog, but she loved him hard and deep and at this moment there would never be another. That's, how powerful and raw her voice was! And I was just a little 8 or 9 year old girl, greiving with her for her man. You dig it?
I love her versions of "unforgettable" &"this bitter earth", among others, of course! An excellent female vocalist, not very well known by today's "sheeple"!
In 1957 a friend and I dropped into the West Adams Hotel bar in Los Angeles. Dinah was staying in the hotel and came down for a drink. She sang for about 4 hours because everyone in the joint was buying her drinks. That was one indelible evening. She got better and better. This song always reminds me of that night. Everybody got lucky!
Wow Amy Winehouse's idol the both had problems with depression and drinking. When Amy sings Wake up alone and says "Stay up clean the house at least I'm not drinking." Dinah taught her how to sing along with Frank Sinatra. Love jazz it's so good!! So much so and the beginnings of rhythm and blues!!!
I wanted some reason to blame on just HAVING ONE DRINK once in a while, Ahhh this gives me a reason for 2. :-))))))) WOW!!! such a velvety voice. Glad I dropped by your channel, after re-reading your lovely words to me. :-) when I was hurting trying to meditate healing on a Being I WILL LOVE FOREVER. :-) Peace and <3 to you!!
@Thebirdienumnum I agree they both have amazing voices and Dinah taught her a lot so she only sang one cover of her song because she said in a documentary about Washington's life that she was too good to cover!! She loved her sassy talk and how she was so quick witted in her songs. I love the cover she did of Dinah's Teach me tonight back when she sang a lot of jazz.
Nancy Wilson's version is much better. Her voice is far superior in control, dynamics, rich tone, lovely vibrato, and strength. Her emotional performance of the song is stellar as well.

I agree, the older i get the more i think she is my favorite female vocalistl!! "Where Are You" from the same album "Dinah 62" is one of my favorite records of all time, period. I love Sinatra, but Dinah owns that song.
