The principle in which the finger is detected is based on capacitance as the plastic plate is non-conductive. A piezoelectric speaker is used to provide audio feedback in addition to serving as an electrode sensing the finger. This can be done without the piezoelectric speaker as well.
@gobrownj i like the capacitance touch switch, can u please mail me the schemetic & part list on mckhedekar@yahoo.co.in thanking u....................................
@Leroy1618 hey man, do you want to buy a light switch like this thats touch to turn on?? email me jacobstar@hotmail.com and ill help you and show you pics
if anyone wants a house voltage 100-250v touch screen light switch message me and ill point you where to buy them

Are you using 555 timer chips for this switch?
Can someone explain how this works? (I know that the human body is a "capacitor" with 30-50 pico farrad, this might be a reason for this switch)

this is exactly what I was looking for, what components did you use? if you don't mind sharing that is

Thats not capacitance, that's a piezo!

uh, sorry then, i thought you were using the piezo as a impact detector :P

Cool idea
Do you have an idea about how to improve this project to make (Touch pad) like the one used in the Laptops???
I can use (PIC) Microcontroller.... but i need to understand the concept...
