Oh man, all that money spent on him and they didn't bother with a voice coach to keep him from being so over the top? His voice wasn't too high, it was too ham.
In the entire history of Hollywood, every actor, (and actress,) who negotiated a record setting contract lived to regret it. The studio always makes an example of an actor who they deem too big for their britches. (Fatty Arbuckle, Gilbert, Sly Stallone, Demi Moore, etc.)
His voice isn't high and feminine necessarily but I could imagine it was definitely not what people (namely women) were expecting. It's not a deep, manly, sexy voice is the bottom line. His voice has a boyish nasal sound very much like Vincent Price's. It's a fine voice but not a turn-on.
I think that Garbo-Gilbert on-screen chemistry was so terrific that something of the sort has never been found again. FLESH AND THE DEVIL (1926) by Clarence Brown proves it undoubtedly.
Pity Gilbert finished the career and life this way. But what great thing Garbo did to have him as co-star in QUEEN CHRISTINA. This wonderful movie by Rouben Mamoulian is the sound film (the most popular till these days) where we can admire Gilbert's voice and performance.
You wouldn't be so cru-EL.

Wow, he was so handsome in the color screen test. It's like seeing what he would have looked like in person.
