There was no elbow made as his arm was tucked in. That was simply a mercy call. As they oilers are loosing 2-1 and probably just lost a player for the game.

He would've wreaked as much devastation had he not left his feet at all or doing so after initial impact. But yeah, going by the rulebook it's a 50/50 call, I would've thought NHL would allow those, Lupul should know better than to cross Detroit's blue line facing left.
It's not Europeans or Canadians as people, it's the style they grow up playing. Canadians are taught from a young age to play tough, physical hockey whereas the focus is Europe has traditionally been more the skill game. With globalization and European players playing in North America at a younger age, the differences are slowly disappearing. It's not to say that there are no Canadians that play a finesse skill game or no Europeans know how to take the body, it's a just a trend.

The problem with leaving your feet is that your arms get up around the guys head when you jump. If you jump, you loose power in the hit because you can no longer drive you legs through the hit. The biggest hits are when a person drives through the hit, and then leaves his feet due to propulsion through the hit. Leaving your feet after the hit is a clean hit. Leaving the ice before is dirty. Kronwall drives through hits. All the good hitters do it.

you are absolutely correct. i recall darcy Tucker jumping at least 12 inches (30 cm) off the ice to elbow Gonchar in the head, and Cherry saying it was a clean hit. I know you mean the latest 4 cups in Detroit, but Candian teams haven't had decent Canadian players (other than Iginla) in years. PLUS the US juniors beat the Canadian Juniors at their own game.

also, pretty much the start of the red wings franchise was when they got one of the best players and leaders of all time in steve yzerman who is canadian. and when you look at the olympic rosters, Canada has had the best team all 4 times (including this year) since the nhl was in it. Guys like Gretzky, Lemieux, McInnis, Blake, Iginla, Crozby). and also we have the best young players coming still as seen by winning five straight world juniors until we won silver this year

Once they added guys like Lidstrom, Fetisov, Kozlov, Konstitinov, Larionov, Fedorov, Sandstrom, Holmstrom, Mirinov, Erikson, and Brown they started winning cups. They continued to win cups with guys like Franzen, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Filpula, Hasek, Lilja, Lebda, Chelios, Rafalski, Ericsson, Kronwall, Abdelkader, Hudler, Samuelsson and Kopecky.
This isn't meant to bash Stevie, he is 1-2 with Howe as best Red Wing ever.

You can say that Canada has had the best roster all four years of the Olympics, but you can't back it up with anything. You still only have one gold, and I doubt that you follow much of the Swedish Elite League, the KHL or any of the other international leagues to make that call. Any argument that you can make for Canada having the best roster is the same arguement that I can make for the Czech Republic, Sweden and whoever wins it this year.

and I have actually Canada now has 2 golds however an example that the nhl is the best league is that alexei morozov is one of the best players in the KHL and was average in the NHL. Jonas Gustaveson was one of the best goalies in Elitserin and while he has lots of potential, is nowhere near the elite in the nhl. That being said it is unbelievable that you dont think canada has the best roster. phaneuf, st louis, green, lecavalier are some of the best in the world and they didnt even make it.

The problem with leaving your feet is that your arms get up around the guys head when you jump. If you jump, you loose power in the hit because you can no longer drive you legs through the hit. The biggest hits are when a person drives through the hit, and then leaves his feet due to propulsion through the hit. Leaving your feet after the hit is a clean hit. Leaving the ice before is dirty. Kronwall drives through hits. All the good hitters do it.

lol 3 feet? You can't even tell in slow motion because the camera does't even show his lower legs. I see his right leg kicked up and his left calf come up a little bit after the hit. and you can't even tell from the other angles because of the bad quality of the video. Nonetheless because the way he hits is borderline and too close to tell, the refs probably made the right call since his shoulders and head are a little higher than Lupul's.

The call on the havlat hit was interference not charging because Kronwall clearly hit havlat before he gets the puck (Just as the book says). This one Kronwall got called for charging because he clearly jumps(Just as the book says). The refs and the NHL agree with me on both so I guess your 0 for 2.

The reason they do call it that often is because it's a pro sport and it brings in money...which is what it's all about
