I just picked up a CLD-3070 at a Good Will store today. It was half price because it had been sitting there for 3 weeks. With my 10% off senior discount it came to $17.99! It came with the remote and seems to work perfectly! I wish it had a headphone jack, but I'm pretty happy. I've got a bunch of laser discs to play on this thing. Is there any preventative maintenance I should be doing? It was great to see your video of the auto reverse mechanism working. Thanks for doing that.
Hello. I was wondering is this a good player to get. I am just starting to collect LaserDisc so not sure which players are the good ones. What would be a good price for one?If I have the sound hooked up to theTV through the RCA jacks on the back will the digital tracks go through them. I ask as I do not have sound system and that is how my Pioneer CLD-909 does it. Has two sets of RCA jacks one labeled analog the other labeled CD/LD digital. Got it cheap but want to upgrade. Thanks for your time.
Awesome!! Now I don't have to flip it like a record.
My Godmother used to own a laserdisc player and some laserdiscs.
I have a mini-Laserdisc, and it's a double sided DVD titled "Sushi's Secrets": one side English, other side French. I hope there's DVD and Blu-ray players that play double-sided discs without flipping over the discs, that would be wonderful.
Nice video. I was wondering what Pioneer models have the auto-switching ability. Also I collect vintage consoles and was wondering if you would recommend getting a LD player or not.
I've looked at a pioneer LD player where the carriage that rotates 180 for auto-flip has slop in the mechanics and is sagging from age. That puts a discontinuity between the rails and rack-type gears on which the sled travels and those of the carriage. When flipping to the other side of the disc, the sled hits the discontinuity and gets stuck entering the carriage, making a loud buzzing noise. The whole machine then freezes up indefinitely. I prefer players without auto-flip.
@3bhui I ended up getting a Pioneer auto-flip a few months ago as my 2nd player, but it's only because it was literally in brand-new condition and only $50 out the door (manual + cables too). No problems so far, but I don't have much faith in it.
@3bhui thats good to know...I thought about buying a player with auto-flip for convenience, but that sounds like more of a hassle than manual flip. thanks for the info.
I do like how they made this one so that the entire pick-up sled move and turn for the side changing is done with just one motor. Pretty ingenious really :)
I've been trying to get my hands on this exact same model. I have one question: Do you know if this deck can play CAV's? It's obvious it can play CLV's, but I wasn't too sure about CAV's.
@bmwguy145 I have this model collecting dust in my house. :-). Amazing to see what's going on when it makes those noises. The only prolem I have with it nowadays is that the machine is noisy for some reason only when loading a laserdisc into the machine. I imagine it just needs to be lubricated but don't know for sure.
@Paul375 That’s right because the laser is upside down and yet still moving from inside to outside. If you manually turned the laserdisc over it would still spin in the same direction.
I also own a DVL-700 and a CLD-3070! However, my CLD-3070 was made in March, 1990.
I also own an LD-660 and a DVL-V888 and am expecting a Panasonic LX-680H and, hopefully, a Sony MDP-600.
My goal is to get as many different iterations of both side play mechanisms as possible and record all on one video for YouTube.
I want to get a Sony MDP-605, Panasonic LX-1000U, and any Pioneer player with Epsilon turn, CLD Gamma turn, and an alternate execution of the Alpha turn.
My brother has a Laser Disc player with many disc's to watch!. I think it's a good sistem because we can convert them to DVD without problems. He has back up's of all his disc's for private use to save the original works!. I loved to see your video because I was curious with those 2 sided works!.
There are a few different ways to execute dual side play.
This Pioneer CLD-3070 uses the Alpha turn system. There are examples of the Epsilon turn around here and the video I have posted as a response is an example of the Gamma turn.
And there are examples from other manufacturers, such as Sony and Panasonic.
As for being able to convert to DVD without problems, a good bit is probably because LaserDisc does not use MacroVision (and can't without interfering with the player itself).
That is too cool! Looks like a really well built machine. The laser on mine follows a U shaped track to get to the other side of the disc. I took the top off the day it arrived to see how the side change worked. :-)
I bought one used, it works FLAWLESSLY. The Auto-Rev mech is a beauty to watch, Only thing this model lacks is RF Dolby output. I wish mine had it. I have several Pioneers. The CLD-HF9G and the CLD-59, as well as D703, D503, and CLD-3030 models. The CLD-59 is my main player. Most of these suffer from lifting the heavy discs and trays to clamp them for spinning... There is only a rubber belt doing it all!
"its a small moon" "that's no moon" ITS A LASERDISC PLAYER! and I have one too now, only I don't think it swaps sides automatically, which I prefer as I want it to be as mechanically simple and reliable as possible (even though I could fix it as I do video game console repair for Play N Trade)
The Pioneer CLD-3070 - because more moving parts means more reliability. Pioneer - video for the future!*
*(disclaimer voice: Future doesn't include laser-rot, mechanical failure, or every factory pressing discs going out of business some futures may vary - ask your dealer for details)
The 3070 is a premium model, only needs an RF DD mod to make it excellent. I still use a CLD 59 Elite. The belt slips. One time I've had laserrot, it was a Who disc finally out on DVD
These truly differ because of the size. The 3070 is a SMALL form factor, so it uses a premium reversing unit, in fact. They both work rather well, though. The speed is the amazing aspect given the tolerances at play! (very heavy, fast rotation)

Cool! I have the same player & always wondered how it switched.
vozpit 3 months ago
Does the movie stop when changing sides and pick up where it left off on the second, and is there a notification that the player is switching sides?
static1994 4 months ago
@static1994 If the player has a framestore / TBC it will keep the last frame on screen while changing side.
Paul375 4 months ago
@Paul375 Is it like the pause feature or is it continuous?
static1994 4 months ago
@static1994 Still frame stays on the screen.
Paul375 4 months ago
@Paul375 Handy feature. I wonder why a multidisk changer was never incorporated into LAserDisc, sort of like a Jukebox... That might be interesting...
Does the laser ever present reloading problems? Does it fteeze or jamb?

I can see why the dual-side play feature breaks on so many players. That's a lot of movement, especially as these things get older and older.

Why does it have to spin down the disc to switch sides?

Because the disc must spin in the opposite direction, to play the other side.

Well, I got my Sony MDP-600.
IMO, it's a mechanically slick player. It makes the CLD-3070's disc drive seem clunkier in comparison.
Unfortunately, the picture quality is mediocre; the MDP-600 has a soft, very grainy picture with colors that appear subdued.
The CLD-3070, on the other hand, has truer and more vibrant colors and the picture is sharper and smoother.

very nice, i always like to see how these things work, never had a laser disc system
TheDevilsGuard 2 years ago
I had no idea the laserdisc player had so much internal moving hardware. I'm assuming earlier models you had to flip the disc yourself.
Barogas 2 years ago
Low to midrange models and even some higher end models were single side play and there were later models that were single-side only.
An example of a low end model with single side play would be the CLD-S104, which is newer than the CLD-3070 on this video.
A mid range model would be the CLD-3030, which is essentially the same as the CLD-3070 but with no dual side play.
A high end model with single-side play would be the Pioneer ELITE LD-S2 and the commercial/industrial LD-V8000.

I just got a CLD-S315 which is obviously singled sided playback. Its my first adventure into LD, and loving it so far.
Seeing this vid shows just how many cogs/motors and things that could fail on the double sided playback!

That disc is pretty warped! Does it play OK?
VideyoJunkei 2 years ago 3
It plays fine. It only looks warped while its getting up to speed.
Paul375 2 years ago 3
There will be discs that will not be perfectly flat, but this is normal.
The rotation will usually correct the warp and the electronic servo control can compensate for what cannot be corrected physically by the rotation.
It's only in the extreme cases of warp or discs that are cone-warped that you may have problems.

Very nice, What sells?
Juliantube3 2 years ago
Does all LD player has a mechanism like that? I
Kuganryde 3 years ago
Only players that can play both sides, and different manufactures have different ways of doing it.
Players that only play one side have a more simple mechanism like an audio CD player.
Paul375 3 years ago
Only some players, for instance, the Pioneer CLD-V880 has auro-reverse and the CLD-V720 doesen't have auto-reverse
In the 90's, theres an easy way that you can tell if there's auto-reverse by model number starting with CLD-????
D=Double-sided player
S=Single-sided player
For example, CLD-S201 is an example of a single-side player and the CLD-D515 is the double-sided player
All players in the DVL series have auto-reverse (ex. DVL-919)

There are 2 ribbon cables at right angles to each other. 1 is used for rototaing and the other for sliding of the pickup assembly.
