The worst Florence ever. Like Olive Oyl from Popeye gargling!! She should have stayed at home and let Kerry Ellis do the role justice - I was there and she was shocking.
"Nobody's Side" is one great song and it would be difficult for any decent singer to do it an injustice. Nevertheless the one standout performer of this song is, and always will be, Elaine Paige. That's just my humble opinion.
@4545sarah Yup - you can buy it from Amazon. It is really, really gr8. Most of it was shot on the 2nd nite of the show, which was 100% better than the 1st nite, which is the video you're watching now.
I found this performance really weak, especially by Idina Menzel's standards. She sings it really awkwardly, she doesn't feel the emotion of the song at all, and the vocal effort sounds kinda strained.
Of course, this comes after me watching Julia Murney sing it, whose interpretation knocks pretty much anyone else's out of the park, so it could just by my opinion by comparison.
@ABoismier Although I am a huge fan I, partly, agree with you. *This* performance of her is not of her best. However, after watching different version of the nights she did this ... I can tell you she did make up for it on those. Furthermore, even those this performance is not great, it is not horrid also ... even in her worst Menzel is great. Also, take into consideration the quality of the video (no offence) it is not one of the best. You do lose some of the content because of it.
@Kylouch I concede, you are correct. Julia Murney's version definitely owns this one, but Idina Menzel is still a theater goddess. And recently, I've quite enjoyed her performances on Glee.
Thank you for not taking my critique so harshly. I appreciate listening to open minded responses. :)
@ABoismier Well ... I 'personally' am not the largest fan of Julia Murney ... I did not quite like her performance. But if I were to compare the one you see here to Ms. Murney's then yes her's would be better. I truthfully I believe this all comes down to personal opinion. But indeed Ms. Menzel is a theatre goddess! I also enjoy her performances on Glee ... she truly brings a REAL theatre experience to the show .. and its nice to see the little blending they've done to her voice :)
I have the CD and DVD to this show. I am late for work often listening to some of the tracks in my car in the parking garage! Love-love-love all of it. Especially You and I with Josh and Idina. It's amazing.
If I'm completely honest I find this performance lacks the passion and anger that it needs....it's safe and reliable but no umph, not like Julia Murney or Judy Kuhn who at least had a bit of attitude with the role.
she looks like she is concentrating soooooo hard during this part and then the long note is AMAZING!!!!! she adds her own flavour to the song, I love it. Obviously
They actually did not have a lot of time to rehearse for this. Idina did a radio interview with Elaine Paige and she mentioned that they only had a few days to throw this all together. The lyrics, I believe were also on the tv prompters at the front of the stage.
Don't get me wrong, I ADORE Idina, but she needs to work on this piece. It seems like she didn't have much time to practice. I esp hate 5:02 where she rushes the "side" to get to the next line...
So many little spots are awkward; you can do better girl!
i agree about 5:02 but i think the problem is the acoustics make is sound horrid and her asthma and i also think she's singing in character. Bway has lost its way when perfect voices r more important than singing like your character and i think idina sticks to her characters
I love this musical so much!! My favorite part of this segment is at 2:45 because the vocals are amazing. They got some really good singers for this musical. Idina is AMAZING!!!!
I love this version of Chess and I think Idina sounds amazing in the CD and the DVD is freaking awesome. But this venue live sounds like crap. There's way too much echo. The acoustics are really shitty...

Good lord. When people post negative comments about "Idina's performance" - or anyone else's for that matter - it ticks me off. This is a "concert" - not a play. Her performance is outstanding. A concert version of a play has limited rehersals and is usually for charity or an anniversary. The same rules DO NOT apply. And...by the way...this should rush to the front of the revival line: anyone recall that "Chicago" closed in it's first year? Only to be revived and run for more than a decade.

You know. I saw this on PBS on Thursday, And I must say...I was really disappointed in Idina.
Her belting notes were INCREDIBLE! I MEAN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!
However....Her acting was sooooo poor. She had her back to the audience, her hands were in her pocket, she fiddled CONSTANTLY. She broke a million and one Theater DON'T rules. Plus, her faltso could use a bit of work as well.
This isn't to say I hate her though. I think she still did fantastic!!! I was just disappointed.
The music and lyrics in Chess are outstandin. I never will understand why it was not a huge success. I still recall when we went a musical and left humming and singing songs and music from the shows.
Many shows today have good stories but few if any memorable songs.
Thanks to PBS for bringing this to our homes today.
...by the way...it really annoys me like hell when people think that they can put down and criticise ANY performer...what gives you the right....they've made it...they're successful...so get over yourself!!!
but i do love how lots of little things said or done in a show is compared to another...it displays what broadway/the west-end is really about-the love of the music and the show and being a theater COMMUNITY(no bitching allowed!!!)
well. i do agree, she is very talented, and didn't merit criticism. however. performers should be criticized. just because someone's made it, doesn't necessarily mean that they're any good. most of mainstream music is crap. musical theatre can be an exception. the people i it are generally more talented. criticism is a good thing. but not bitching. just saying "you suck" isn't criticism. it's being jealous. saying "you suck because.... " and giving real reasons is valid. even if you don't agree.
i just find it hard to come to terms with (no offence to every youtuber who has commented) the fact that the ones criticizing are NOT critics
critique is important and i get that everyone has their views... but some of the things said aren't necessary
just a thought (and not meant in a rude way): generally if someone's "made it"... don't they kinda have to be good... otherwise why would they be chosen
oh, you're not being rude. :). it depends on how they made it. how they were chosen. how many people get 'picked' to be mainstream because they are an great musician, or have a spectacular voice? the average person doesn't have any idea of what REALLY makes good music. which is why they shouldn't be critics. and also why popularity isn't always a good indicator of musicality. or talent. this isn't always true. but it works as a general rule. maybe my standards are just too high.
well. you're right. everyone is different. i like people to be original . or supremely talented. idina... i am actually very impressed with her voice. she has a lot of talent. i don't know about a connection with all her performances. but she's good, no doubt about that. :).
it always seems like i'm the one standing up for idina in these videos on youtube!!
i'm not making excuses but this is filmed from a very high angle and isn' the best of qualities so i don't see how you can comment on her body language and say that she looks down a lot
looking down a lot is the body language!!! she's having an argument and in parts plays the aggressive side very well
vocally i thought she was outstanding and her performance can only be determined by those who were there and
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As much as I like Idina, I'm not too impressed with her performance here... She's constantly looking down to the floor and there isn't much body language for this piece... I honestly prefer Julia Murney's Nobody's Side.
And what the heck, people are giving negative comments for just saying that they prefer other artists' renditions? We have our own opinions. Come on, people!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
But what is she doing if shes not reading from the floor??!! shes constantly looking down!...Her voice might be great, but as a performance...no... Take a look at the swedish version of "nobodys on nobodys side" instead: No looking down the floor, thats for sure!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Elaine Paige will always be Queen Florence..After all..it was written for her..she had the style, power, nuance, ..Idina sounds like a 13yr old girl...she sings chess like wicked..ughhh...Its called musicality girl..oh well... I did not hire her
this was good and I love Idina, but Julia Murney's Nobody Side is way better. there's so much more emotion in Julia's, Idina seemed a little stiff in this piece.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think Idina was fabulous in Wicked, and her recent solo album was great BUT, she was miscast as Florence in Chess, she is too American and her voice is far too pop for the score.
Im pretty sure it is the Chess logo, although I can see how anyone would think shes reading from the floor. She does look down an awful lot when she isnt singing looking like shes reading and she does have a bit of a history of forgetting words to stuff sometimes. Other videos on here are panned to the right more and you can tell its just the logo though
There were closed-circuit TVs showing the conductor, to help the performers keep time with the orchestra that was BEHIND them. They also had teleprompters in some of the monitors, but in other videos you can tell that Idina's watching the conductor.
Trust me, it's hard to perform when you can't see the conductor.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The backing singers sound like Pinky and Perky!! Not a good version, although better than Judy Kuhn. Elaine the original and best, closely followed by Julia Murney.
If they did this show again on Broadway I think they would have a hard time picking a Florence. There are some great performances. I think Idina sounds great. You guys are nuts if you think she isn't.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That sustained note at 6:50 was HORRIBLE. Its a shame Julia was unavailable for this concert, having another recording of her doing Nobody's side would have been awesome.
I really like both Julia and Idina...it's fun to see how differently they interpret the same piece of music. Julia's edgier, Idina's got a more vulnerable take. Both are amazing. I'd buy the soundtracks from both concert performances in a heartbeat.
Awh man! Some people have been really mean about her! But this whole video PROVES how amazing she was! The first bit was AWESOME! She really put forward a lot about the temperament of Florence there, and then with adam, he screeched loads but she was awesome! Then Nobodys Side was like JIIIZ! I remember just thinking WOW! All her little idinariffs were there and perfect!!! She has amazing control and chest range!
I saw this show in London's West End in the late 1980's...it was incredible. Due to some sort of copyright/legal issues, I don't think the music's performed in it's entirety in the US. Can't wait for the DVD of this performance to become available sometime in 2009.
i personally didnt realise there was criteria u had to meet to before goin to concerts like this! and wot should it matter if they were idina or groban fans goin to the chess concert - didnt they pay the money to go, and didnt they experience a new musical while they were there ... perhaps they can away loving "Chess the musical" and not just the actors/singers in it! i personal would love to have gone cus it features 5 of my fav artists - idina, kerry, josh, adam pascal & david bedella!
I am a huge fan of Idina and julia They are my favouites in wicked. Idina has a powerhouse voice but i must say that julias was alot better in my opinion!!
This was much better than i expected...but honestly...no one is ever gonna sing this better than Julia Murney. Idina sing this very well though...dont get me wrong
Idina has an amazing voice and stage presence of course, but I have to say I enjoyed Julia Murney's performance more because of the staging and the strength of the chorus, the balance was a bit off in this version
Thank you so much for this! This is one of my favourite songs in Chess and I also like the part with Molokov and Florence and Freddie so I really liked that you had the whole thing. I saw the performance on the 13th but sat pretty far to the side but loved it!
i love Idina mezel in chess and wicked.. this is actually my favorite song from Chess and SHE did a phenomal job singing it....but to me no one's version would beat Julia Murney's version....I still loved Idina's version...:) :)
I've just met her..literally about 3 hours ago lol shes was amzing in chess i think it never gives you the proper impression unless you heard it live... shes awesome :D:D and so sweet and pretty in real life xx
Why do you always put down other performers for the sake of bigging up Idina? She's fantastic as she is, if you have to put down others to compliment her that shows what a fan you are and how hypocritical you are - "more respectful fans". People commenting on how good Kerry were are giving objective opinions.
I didn't put Kerry Ellis down!!! In fact I was saying how bad the Kerry FANS were for putting Idina fans down! People kept slating her on this video and talking about Kerry!!! I was being the bigger person lol.
This night was VERY special for me, and a bunch of other fans too, and people constantly bitching realy begins to ruin the joy of the evening. In my comment you replied to I never slated Kerry, but all the KERRY fans were certainly NOT giving objective opinions! Honestly, I'm not lying!
What annoys me is this night was "hijacked" by Idina/Wicked/Groban fans - when it was meant to be about fans who love Chess The Musical first and foremost. I don't think half the people there would have cared WHAT was being performed as long as it featured their favourites. Shame.
A lot of people were there who were Chess fanatics. I myself went to sieze the opportunity to see Idina onstage, and I also love musicals (Hence why I think she's great in the first place!) and I checked out the songs from Chess and enjoyed a lot of them. Also a lot of people here have said this was their fave song and she did it well...That kinda proves people like the music...Chess is not my favourite musical but I love a lot of the music and I loved her portrayal of Florence! That's it!
they were videoing the performance when i was there on monday night!!! so hopefully they are going to make a dvd... like they did when they did Les Miserable at the Albert Hall! :D
yes they were i was there on the tuesday and may i just say it was amazing 'ALL' the cast were great. anyway i heard that the video of chess would come out around christmas time i dont know how i'll survive that long. Before anyone asks i heard about the dvd in my mums car on Elaine Paige!
I get what you mean I used to hate Julia for that. But When I kept listening to her, I started liking her. I don't really like her as Elphaba, though.
I still love her in "The Wild Party." She did a great job vocally on that!!!
It's just sometimes she grates on me...Like I know she could hold those notes if she tried, and as I watch I'm actually willing her to, and then it's just not happening lol!
ahh thank you for posting this!!! i was there that night!!! and Idina blew me away literally!!! i really cannot wait for the dvd to come out!!! i still cant believe i saw Idina again!!! :D i love her... and i loved this song!!! and You and I! urgh!!! love!!! xox
So she was as amazing as I thought she'd be? (Couldn't be there myself) I've read so many "mean" things, but I just can't believe what's been said. Idina's always amazing.
ahh i know!!! aww shame you couldnt go! in my opinion... Idina wooped the floor! :D i cant believe all the nastiness that has been going around! they are just mean people! :D
Amazing!!!
well Idina is pretty amazing in everything!!

well. i do agree, she is very talented, and didn't merit criticism. however. performers should be criticized. just because someone's made it, doesn't necessarily mean that they're any good. most of mainstream music is crap. musical theatre can be an exception. the people i it are generally more talented. criticism is a good thing. but not bitching. just saying "you suck" isn't criticism. it's being jealous. saying "you suck because.... " and giving real reasons is valid. even if you don't agree.
thevolk1993 2 years ago
i understand what you mean completely..
i just find it hard to come to terms with (no offence to every youtuber who has commented) the fact that the ones criticizing are NOT critics
critique is important and i get that everyone has their views... but some of the things said aren't necessary
just a thought (and not meant in a rude way): generally if someone's "made it"... don't they kinda have to be good... otherwise why would they be chosen
:)
xoxo
WestEndGirl96 2 years ago
oh, you're not being rude. :). it depends on how they made it. how they were chosen. how many people get 'picked' to be mainstream because they are an great musician, or have a spectacular voice? the average person doesn't have any idea of what REALLY makes good music. which is why they shouldn't be critics. and also why popularity isn't always a good indicator of musicality. or talent. this isn't always true. but it works as a general rule. maybe my standards are just too high.
thevolk1993 2 years ago 2
)still trying not to be rude because those are definitely not my intentions)
i don't think your standards are too high, i think you just prefer a particualr kind of performer that differs to other people (such as me)
i think each performer has their strengths and weaknesses and different people like different performers/performances
i have nothing against those who's opinions are different (such as you because you present it in a more positive light)
people just tick me off with unnecessary

idina is one of if not my favourite performer because i just feel a strange connection to each of her performances
now maybe you don't have that connection with her but maybe you have an all-time favourite performer like i do who you "connect" with
after all everyone's different
:)

well. you're right. everyone is different. i like people to be original . or supremely talented. idina... i am actually very impressed with her voice. she has a lot of talent. i don't know about a connection with all her performances. but she's good, no doubt about that. :).
thevolk1993 2 years ago 4
it always seems like i'm the one standing up for idina in these videos on youtube!!
i'm not making excuses but this is filmed from a very high angle and isn' the best of qualities so i don't see how you can comment on her body language and say that she looks down a lot
looking down a lot is the body language!!! she's having an argument and in parts plays the aggressive side very well
vocally i thought she was outstanding and her performance can only be determined by those who were there and

But what is she doing if shes not reading from the floor??!! shes constantly looking down!...Her voice might be great, but as a performance...no... Take a look at the swedish version of "nobodys on nobodys side" instead: No looking down the floor, thats for sure!

Elaine Paige will always be Queen Florence..After all..it was written for her..she had the style, power, nuance, ..Idina sounds like a 13yr old girl...she sings chess like wicked..ughhh...Its called musicality girl..oh well... I did not hire her
candide43201 2 years ago
this was good and I love Idina, but Julia Murney's Nobody Side is way better. there's so much more emotion in Julia's, Idina seemed a little stiff in this piece.

That riff from 6:40 to 6:50 is amazing.
I listened to it like twelve times.

I think Idina was fabulous in Wicked, and her recent solo album was great BUT, she was miscast as Florence in Chess, she is too American and her voice is far too pop for the score.

david bedella, kerry ellis, adam pascal, idina menzel, AND josh groban? The theatre gods are amazing and crazy.

Im pretty sure it is the Chess logo, although I can see how anyone would think shes reading from the floor. She does look down an awful lot when she isnt singing looking like shes reading and she does have a bit of a history of forgetting words to stuff sometimes. Other videos on here are panned to the right more and you can tell its just the logo though
livewire413 3 years ago 5
There were closed-circuit TVs showing the conductor, to help the performers keep time with the orchestra that was BEHIND them. They also had teleprompters in some of the monitors, but in other videos you can tell that Idina's watching the conductor.
Trust me, it's hard to perform when you can't see the conductor.

I love her. So much.
Even if her voice is "whiny" at times, I think it makes her unique... it's trained but not FULL ON trained.
BlueJeanBaby012 3 years ago 7
Exactly, I love her voice cuz it is unique, and its super powerful and has this certain quirk that just makes you love her :)

That sustained note at 6:50 was HORRIBLE. Its a shame Julia was unavailable for this concert, having another recording of her doing Nobody's side would have been awesome.
ZONEACE 3 years ago
I really like both Julia and Idina...it's fun to see how differently they interpret the same piece of music. Julia's edgier, Idina's got a more vulnerable take. Both are amazing. I'd buy the soundtracks from both concert performances in a heartbeat.

I just love Idina!!!!! Her voice is just INCREDIBLE!!!!!
Clarinetist0409 3 years ago 4
SUCK ON THIS IDINA BASHERS!!!

I saw this show in London's West End in the late 1980's...it was incredible. Due to some sort of copyright/legal issues, I don't think the music's performed in it's entirety in the US. Can't wait for the DVD of this performance to become available sometime in 2009.
mountainhopper2003 3 years ago
It's performed entirely, just a different version with a completely different second act.

i personally didnt realise there was criteria u had to meet to before goin to concerts like this! and wot should it matter if they were idina or groban fans goin to the chess concert - didnt they pay the money to go, and didnt they experience a new musical while they were there ... perhaps they can away loving "Chess the musical" and not just the actors/singers in it! i personal would love to have gone cus it features 5 of my fav artists - idina, kerry, josh, adam pascal & david bedella!

This was much better than i expected...but honestly...no one is ever gonna sing this better than Julia Murney. Idina sing this very well though...dont get me wrong
wickedawesum 3 years ago
Idina has an amazing voice and stage presence of course, but I have to say I enjoyed Julia Murney's performance more because of the staging and the strength of the chorus, the balance was a bit off in this version
Javaisreve 3 years ago 2
Thank you so much for this! This is one of my favourite songs in Chess and I also like the part with Molokov and Florence and Freddie so I really liked that you had the whole thing. I saw the performance on the 13th but sat pretty far to the side but loved it!

i love Idina mezel in chess and wicked.. this is actually my favorite song from Chess and SHE did a phenomal job singing it....but to me no one's version would beat Julia Murney's version....I still loved Idina's version...:) :)

Why do you always put down other performers for the sake of bigging up Idina? She's fantastic as she is, if you have to put down others to compliment her that shows what a fan you are and how hypocritical you are - "more respectful fans". People commenting on how good Kerry were are giving objective opinions.
vixiedixie99 3 years ago 3
I didn't put Kerry Ellis down!!! In fact I was saying how bad the Kerry FANS were for putting Idina fans down! People kept slating her on this video and talking about Kerry!!! I was being the bigger person lol.
This night was VERY special for me, and a bunch of other fans too, and people constantly bitching realy begins to ruin the joy of the evening. In my comment you replied to I never slated Kerry, but all the KERRY fans were certainly NOT giving objective opinions! Honestly, I'm not lying!
MvyMkr 3 years ago 3
What annoys me is this night was "hijacked" by Idina/Wicked/Groban fans - when it was meant to be about fans who love Chess The Musical first and foremost. I don't think half the people there would have cared WHAT was being performed as long as it featured their favourites. Shame.
DistantCousin 3 years ago
A lot of people were there who were Chess fanatics. I myself went to sieze the opportunity to see Idina onstage, and I also love musicals (Hence why I think she's great in the first place!) and I checked out the songs from Chess and enjoyed a lot of them. Also a lot of people here have said this was their fave song and she did it well...That kinda proves people like the music...Chess is not my favourite musical but I love a lot of the music and I loved her portrayal of Florence! That's it!

:D i love her... and i loved this song!!! and You and I! urgh!!! love!!! xox
