Who knows the Genesis Song Wot Gorilla? I think I know now why this SongName "Wot Gorilla" was taken then... 1,5 weeks after the release of the Wind and Wuthering Album, Genesis went on Tour for the first time with Chester Thompson, and I think this is the tribute to it :D
If you love the '74 band, like I do, you hafta hafta hafta hear YCDTOSA Vol. 2 disc 1. The greatest band ever, bar none. Go Ruth! Go George! Frank I miss you ! Brian, i could use a little more monitor, hello hello....
i noticed one part where brock was playing the flute and he opens his right eye for just a second...but it looked like his eyes were rolled into the back of his head...true tell he was into it...
I saw an earlier version of this same tour in Oct. 73 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Ralph Humphries joined Chester Thompson on drums with Ruth Underwood on percussion, and Bruce Fowler played trombone with another Fowler playing trumpet. There was also another guitar player. I believe it was the Roxy and Elsewhere tour. Now THAT was Zappa at his best, but I sure aint complaining about this...my favorite Zappa tune.
God this is great! It's as if the Grand Wazoo himself were here, leading me, guiding me, taking me to the utmost reaches of the karmic negligence that is Ruths' vagina.
This is my favourite Zappa era I think. I saw N.P. Brock with some others a week ago on the Zappanale and he put on a great show! As did Ike Willis and the other ex band member that were there. :)
Florentine Pogen is a swedish cookie. The bakery is Pågen (still in business) located in Skåne, Sweden, and the cookie is known here in Scandinavia as Tosca Pågar.
Saw this tour in Portland, one of the top 10 lifetime (out of wayy too many). The band was having IMMENSE AMOUNTS OF FUN playing this stuff. RUTH UNDERWOOD!!!
and George Duke! Imagine what playing in that band was like and what it would do for your musical base of knowledge. I heard FZ was a real PITA at times and didn't chum around with the boys too much...but what a university..
From what I understand this was filmed for pbs at the pbs studios and the recording of this show are the basic tracks that became one size fits all, Frank did this alot, use live tracks and then over dub in the studio.
My alltime favorite Zappa album has always been "one size fits all" which this song is on. That whole album is just so perfect and diverse. I read some years ago when asked what was his best/favorite album he ever made Zappa replied "one size fits all" That was so righteous! I really miss Zappa. He was a great American much in the same vain as imported John Lennon. Very cool people.
We miss ya, Frank. This video is almost 35 years old, and it has yet to be surpassed. I must have listened to the "Roxy & Elsewhere" album and the "Stage 2" album 100 times!
I dig the bluesy ending on this particular version of "Pogen".
Florentine pogen is probably just a silly wordgame. "Florentiner" is a the name for a sweet, flat, crisp, cookie, very poular in Scandinavia and Germany. And they are named after the Italian town as they are inspired by Italian sweets.
Pogen is a different spelling of the Swedish bakery Pågen. The pronunciation is almost exactly the same.
But together it does sound like som Italian noble.
After a bit of research I can tell you that Chester's gorilla was a particularly unwelcomed groupie that liked Chester Thompson.
Chester's gorilla, played here by road manager Marty Perellis, makes a cameo appearance on the Dub Room Special. There is a hidden reference to Perellis on the cover of Overnite Sensation and in several other songs on other albums.
The liner notes of One Size Fits All credit Chester as gorilla victim.
Groupies were a rich source of materiel for Zappa. There are references to groupies on nearly every album, in particular, 200 Motels. Some of Zappa's material is also self-referential. Florentine Pogen has a number of references in it
This beautiful version of "Florentine Pogen" appears on the cd bootleg "Cuccurullo brillo brullo" and on the official album named "Dub room special!" (released in 2007)
YES this is the basic ONE SIZE FITS ALL line-up. per Fz "the basic tracks for INCA ROADS and FLORINTINE POGEN were recorded live at KCET-TV Los Angles during the production of our TV special. The guitar solo on INCA ROADS was recorded live during our 1974 concert in Helsinki, Finland. This album was produced simultaneously with our next album ( coming soon). I hereby pronounce myself ready to back On the Road,"
i love nappy. i hang out with him when project/object is in boston. damn gail for messin up the last gig here. what's past is gone...she lost her lawsuits,. what a bitch she was. ahem...did 'i' say that? i meant cunt.
As per FZ this didn't appear on album until the summer of 75 even tho they had been playing this for close to a year. Great sound by great musicians with great closing jam.
