  • Who knows the Genesis Song Wot Gorilla? I think I know now why this SongName "Wot Gorilla" was taken then... 1,5 weeks after the release of the Wind and Wuthering Album, Genesis went on Tour for the first time with Chester Thompson, and I think this is the tribute to it :D

  • awesome

  • This is the music that should be on the fucking radio... <.< ^_^

  • Ruth. What I would give to see this band 1 more time.

  • If you love the '74 band, like I do, you hafta hafta hafta hear YCDTOSA Vol. 2 disc 1. The greatest band ever, bar none. Go Ruth! Go George! Frank I miss you ! Brian, i could use a little more monitor, hello hello....

  • i noticed one part where brock was playing the flute and he opens his right eye for just a second...but it looked like his eyes were rolled into the back of his head...true tell he was into it...

    man thats good stuff...rip Z

  • All great. Brock is great.

  • so fucking talented.....

  • I saw an earlier version of this same tour in Oct. 73 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Ralph Humphries joined Chester Thompson on drums with Ruth Underwood on percussion, and Bruce Fowler played trombone with another Fowler playing trumpet. There was also another guitar player. I believe it was the Roxy and Elsewhere tour. Now THAT was Zappa at his best, but I sure aint complaining about this...my favorite Zappa tune.

  • A true American Original fo sho.

  • My musical idol.

  • please you...tell me, today, one genius like him...only one is enough, i don't want ten..

  • The best band FZ ever has : Fun, dexterity, speed, energy... Ruth is awesome, Napoleon is fun, Chester plays hard, George Duke is simply amazing!

  • I like Vai. I like Satriani.

But an artist is greater than a shredder and Zappa was a consummate artist.

    I love Frank Zappa. RIP

  • God this is great! It's as if the Grand Wazoo himself were here, leading me, guiding me, taking me to the utmost reaches of the karmic negligence that is Ruths' vagina.

  • This is my favourite Zappa era I think. I saw N.P. Brock with some others a week ago on the Zappanale and he put on a great show! As did Ike Willis and the other ex band member that were there. :)

  • mine too

  • Franks best band and best record One Size Fits all.

  • one size fits all is not his best record. that goes to hot rats, were only in it for the money, or one night sensetaion and several others.

  • absolutely

  • You are so right!

  • Never listened to zappa, only heard a cover of bobby brow, but when I heard this tracks I thought, damn... ... interesting, many small details

  • No offence to chad, scott ,steve, etc, etc, but this was the best group he ever had in my opinion. Simply unbelievable!

  • WONDERFUL DELIGHTFUL!!!

  • thats a drum kit to die for gents!

  • Florentine Pogen is a swedish cookie. The bakery is Pågen (still in business) located in Skåne, Sweden, and the cookie is known here in Scandinavia as Tosca Pågar.

  • Saw this tour in Portland, one of the top 10 lifetime (out of wayy too many). The band was having IMMENSE AMOUNTS OF FUN playing this stuff. RUTH UNDERWOOD!!!

  • OMFG.... AWESOME

  • ya it was on the album.

  • one of the best live performances i've seen in my life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is this a Lip sync? sounds exactly like the album

  • FZ used this performance as a basic track on "One Size Fits All"

  • That's testament to how fantastic they were.

  • and George Duke! Imagine what playing in that band was like and what it would do for your musical base of knowledge. I heard FZ was a real PITA at times and didn't chum around with the boys too much...but what a university..

  • That band was absolutely amazing- 70's with NMB, Terry Bozio, Ruth Underwood...you just shake your head...

  • Sensacional !!!!!!!!

  • From what I understand this was filmed for pbs at the pbs studios and the recording of this show are the basic tracks that became one size fits all, Frank did this alot, use live tracks and then over dub in the studio.

  • My alltime favorite Zappa album has always been "one size fits all" which this song is on. That whole album is just so perfect and diverse. I read some years ago when asked what was his best/favorite album he ever made Zappa replied "one size fits all" That was so righteous! I really miss Zappa. He was a great American much in the same vain as imported John Lennon. Very cool people.

  • Yes, it is very good. I have a hard time naming an "alltime favorite album" from Zappa, he has so many good one's.

  • OMG! This is really awesome!

  • CHESTER'S GORILLA !!!!!!!

  • One Size Fits All,is an overlooked masterpiece! I bow to your drool,wazool17!!! Thanks.

  • Fuck...Napoleon Murphy Brock is a fucking god.

  • agreed!

  • Where the fuck was Youtube when i was a kid...this is what i have been wanting to see my whole life...lol

  • This is off the "dub room special" DVD ! It is a great DVD !

  • As One Size Fitz All was the first album I bought with FZ, it has a special place in my heart. An amazing album!

  • My major musical influence as a drummer growing up was Zappa and this album was a pinnacle. Still is.

Great to see this on tape.

Ruth Underwood is a master. Great to see here playing.

  • Ruth I love you!!

  • "Just as gorilla!"

Oh my goodness. This is good music!

We miss ya, Frank. This video is almost 35 years old, and it has yet to be surpassed. I must have listened to the "Roxy & Elsewhere" album and the "Stage 2" album 100 times!

I dig the bluesy ending on this particular version of "Pogen".

  • "Chester's Gorilla."

  • she goes mooooooooo

  • you're f.. right - LOL

  • Napoleons Voice is superb...great.

  • that's ruth!

  • the gorilla now defined, can we move on to what a florentine pogen is anyway?

  • I think it's a type of cookie or pastry

  • I wonder if the daughter of a wealthy Florentine Pogen is Chester's gorilla

  • Florentine pogen is probably just a silly wordgame. "Florentiner" is a the name for a sweet, flat, crisp, cookie, very poular in Scandinavia and Germany. And they are named after the Italian town as they are inspired by Italian sweets.

Pogen is a different spelling of the Swedish bakery Pågen. The pronunciation is almost exactly the same.

But together it does sound like som Italian noble.

  • napoleon m. brock has said that it was about the daughter of a wealthy cookie maker.

  • What's the story behind Chester's gorilla? Some kind of inside joke?

  • After a bit of research I can tell you that Chester's gorilla was a particularly unwelcomed groupie that liked Chester Thompson.

Chester's gorilla, played here by road manager Marty Perellis, makes a cameo appearance on the Dub Room Special. There is a hidden reference to Perellis on the cover of Overnite Sensation and in several other songs on other albums.

The liner notes of One Size Fits All credit Chester as gorilla victim.

  • Groupies were a rich source of materiel for Zappa. There are references to groupies on nearly every album, in particular, 200 Motels. Some of Zappa's material is also self-referential. Florentine Pogen has a number of references in it

  • Marty loves k-9 species in a particular way

  • This beautiful version of "Florentine Pogen" appears on the cd bootleg "Cuccurullo brillo brullo" and on the official album named "Dub room special!" (released in 2007)

  • To: rafamalicats

YES this is the basic ONE SIZE FITS ALL line-up. per Fz "the basic tracks for INCA ROADS and FLORINTINE POGEN were recorded live at KCET-TV Los Angles during the production of our TV special. The guitar solo on INCA ROADS was recorded live during our 1974 concert in Helsinki, Finland. This album was produced simultaneously with our next album ( coming soon). I hereby pronounce myself ready to back On the Road,"

FZ Easter Sunday 1975 11:30 PM

  • oh im sorry, not this particular version....but another i have on dvd they used to put on the record one size fits all

  • this song is so cool i think frank hit the nail here so many colors here

  • Is this the One Size Fits All lineup?

  • definitely!

just read it up on the internet...

they actually captured THIS PARTICULAR live performance on the record....

only the big Zap mixed some extra voices/ layers over the final record takes...

  • Napoleon Murphy Brock is fantastic. He's also on Roxy and elsewhere.Zappa always had great lineups, this one was as good as it got

  • i love nappy. i hang out with him when project/object is in boston. damn gail for messin up the last gig here. what's past is gone...she lost her lawsuits,. what a bitch she was. ahem...did 'i' say that? i meant cunt.

  • Napoleon is such a showman like a youger cooler, better dancin, James Brown :) And he is even cool Today

Watch Ruth when she´s laughing when the Gorilla appears you cant hear her blowing the Duck Flute

uh jimmypop33 dont forget Bobby Martin he has a Great Voice to on Whippin Pose

Great Guitar playin by Zappa as always i love his Gibson.

I got a question Is this Version on some Boot Leg or YCDTOSA ?

Watch the mallets of invention its a interview with Ruth she plays St. Alfonso

  • Anyone out remember Chesters kit? Single headed Luds! Big time Seventies Kit. Very dry....perfect at the time! Do u concur?

  • This is my favorit ensemble!

  • absolutely fabulous - thanx

  • yes thx a lot for posting... i grew up with this sound in my heart and its always there even if theres no music around me

  • Superb.

  • The best FZ line up by far!! Napoleon Brock Murphy is amazing as is everyone else! I miss you Frank!

  • Green Hocker, in a greyhound locker, smoking in the pygmy twylyte.....best live band ever !

  • I haven't yet learned to truly appreciate Frank's music, but this may just set me off

  • is this on dvd?

  • it's on the dvd "dub room special" i think

  • Im pretty sure its from the legendary KCET studio performances in Los Angeles on August 1974.

  • She was the daughter of a wealthy

    Florentine Pogen

    Read 'em 'n weep

    Was here adjustable slogan

    She was a debutante daisy

    With a color-note organ

    Deep in the street

    She drove a '59 Morgan

  • As per FZ this didn't appear on album until the summer of 75 even tho they had been playing this for close to a year. Great sound by great musicians with great closing jam.

"that's the sound she makes, (gerft#fkjed@6,.32}:4)

    when her crab cakes"

    quack,quack

  • Can anyone send me a link to the video where Steve Vai explains how FZ showed him how to play "Whats New In Baltimore"? I saw it a long time ago and I haven't been able to find it recently...

  • So tight!!! Greatness personified, Frank knew his stuff!!!

  • FZ always had the best vocalists in the '70s and '80s...Ray White, George Duke, and my fav Ike Willis.

No other band compares to Zappa. It's just simple the best music ever made. Period.

  • ...regardless to say in addition to the animated Napoleon Murphy Brock!!!

  • Napoleon Murphy bRocks

    (nice)

  • Fantastic tune played by a great bunch of musicians. Great!

  • my absolute favourite zappa song

  • Simply amazing!! What an awesome, silly, irreverent, talented, and TIGHT band!! So true to the studio version with an awesome jam in the middle and Napolean's dancing and gestures are perfect! Always one of my all time favorite FZ tunes!! Thanks Wazoo!!

  • woah! thanks a lot for uploading!!!
