I notice he yanked the bar off the floor - I thought you had to start the pull slowly and then accelerate, but now I think about it, it seems logical to start the pull speedy because then it can accelerate more and be even faster. Any advice on this?
@ShotokanKarateRules Experienced lifters exert the highest force to the barbell when the bar is around knee-joint height. This is the position the highest forces can be created. The barbell has to come near this position for force generation at a somewhat low speed to create a max force on the bar. For short lightweights, the bar is already at knee joint height when the weight is grounded.
I'm no expert but it seems like a bad idea to hold your breath like that. From what I've heard breathing during lifts is extremely important because it helps to keep your spine straight.
@ParabolaTool holding your breath keeps the torso more rigid and more stable in the bottom position. letting your air out is same as letting air out of a balloon.
in heavy lifts like this the internal abdominal presure helps the spine to stay strait. if he would bread that thing will be compromised. however is not good ideea to holf the apneea too long because of the intra cranial presure. so the best way is to find a way in between.
After hearing you speak at the coaches meeting at Jr's I was excited about your school and Josh is the first one I thought of. Take him under your wing and make him a monster. I'm glad he is going to go there too.
I dont know if it is true, but i noticed a little different in technique between people who train "russian" and people who train "bulgarian". More mechanics the first, more agressive the second.
I don't understand how bodybuilding is so popular but this sort of thing seems almost 'underground', especially here in the UK. Boggles my mind.

@ShotokanKarateRules what matters most is that the second pull is faster than the initial pull from the floor..
