@masterskyrunner The term "neocon" was created to describe Democrats who couldn't stand that Jimmy Carter was turning America into a Third World country, so they crossed over and voted for Reagan. They were socially liberal, yet fiscally conservative. Libertarians are socially liberal, yet fiscally conservative. Therefore, the term "neocon" best describes Libertarians.

The first Republican was Abraham Lincoln, who was as big of a Big Government liberal tyrant as they came, in those days. He was Woodrow Wilson before Woodrow Wilson was Woodrow Wilson. The original Republican platform was, essentially, today's Democrat party platform.

That is what the founders believed. Are you saying that the people who oppose the second amemdment are the true conservatives? Anyway, I follow Jeffersonian Republicanism, when he made the Democratic-Republican Party, the most conservative major party in our nations history.

It might be more accurate to say that Libertarians such as Ron and Rand Paul, who run as Republicans, are worthy of the "neocon" label, as they definitely fit the proper description. Those who oppose the 2nd Amendment are true Republicans, as the party was founded on what is, essentially, today's Democrat platform. Republicans and Conservatives are not necessarily the same thing.

Everyone else that I have talked to says that neo-cons are Conservative socially, but liberal economically and foreign affairs-wise. Neo-cons are the people who created all the big banks and corperations. So you call him liberal becuase he wants to change so many things really fast? @masterskyrunner OK, you have officially crossed the line into Looneyland. I wasn't aware we were discussing Bible prophecy. The issue was Ron Paul's ridiculous "if we ignore the bad guys, they'll leave us alone" foreign policy. That doesn't work on the playground, and it most definitely doesn't work in geopolitics. We only left Vietnam because our civilian "leaders" at the time didn't have the stomach to do what needed to be done to win.

@masterskyrunner John McCain is socially liberal (in more cases than most people know) and, generally speaking, fiscally conservative... so "neocon" would fit him, as would "Progressive-light." My point was that the term "neocon" did not originally mean what most people think it means now, and that the original, intended definition more closely describes Libertarians... particularly those that utilize the Republican label to get elected.

When we went into the Middle East propping up governments, westernizing, and making everything our way, were we not creating an empire, in trade and diplomacy?

No, we were not "creating an empire," we were/are attempting to bring freedom to a freedom-starved region, which is a pretty noble (not to mention, moral) goal to most Americans.

It just muddles an already bastardized political language to call them neo-cons. The traditional right was opposed to nation-building and interventionism abroad. They also tended to live and let live on social issues.
