G'day ppw, an interesting topic and great to see the penetration of a napped flint head.
Have you done a video on the napping itself, would appreciate a link if you have.
A little off topic, but adds to low pound bows. I had a 32 lb 16" draw Osage bow that I called "Splinter", using metal blades, I took several wild goats (soft skin) distance ranging from 5 meters to 15 meters. At short range, complete pass through. Though on a pig, just broke the skin due to low arrow weight, no stored energy.
Granted the deer might run and break the arrow, but I would think the arrows and tips would have been made to retract so the arrow was intact. Great vid thanks.
this rise a question, about broader points, they should get less penetration, due to there broader surface area. And maybe hit ribs, instead of sliding past them. or?
This is a nice demonstration. I never got to actually see the penetration of a stone point before. I have been practicing flint knapping myself. No points to show off yet, just a few that broke on my right before i finished them.
Taking a deer with primitive gear that I made is on my bucket list. Right now I use a long bow with carbon arrows and zwickey broadheads.
Very good demonstration, now someone should send this to the Mythbuster's show. They had a horrible show on this subject and concluded the reason for using stone points was simply prehistoric "bling". I have one comment or question, if the point goes half way in the animal I was told the movement of the animal running would produce additional cutting damage from the point precessing within the body cavity.
@gotrocksinhead Thanks buddy!! I've always been fascinated with primitive people and I wanted to show that the old guys knew their business and were capable hunters.
I have to laugh at this whole "meadowcroft" site. They're trying to conclude white people were the first ones here all based off of a similarity of spearhead/arrowhead shapes? Spearheads/arrowheads all have the same shape all over the earth. Everyone figured out the same things.
Anyway, good video. (and this new layout of youtube really sucks!)
Billy, that was a great video. I either learn something knew or have my understanding of things confirmed with each vid you post. Keep up the good work. Tim
@NatureManGuy Thanks Nature guy. Yeah stone points don't have to be pretty to be deadly. I've made numerous kills with ugly stone points and as long as they're sharp they definitely do the job.
great video, but may i ask how many yards away were these shots taken, and do you think the change in yards would make a significant change on the shot outcome?... but do keep up the good work man. peace
@karido013 I was 10 yards away from the deer. Yes I think longer distance would affect penetration, so I would prefer to be close if I was using this bow for deer hunting.
Excellent video, how fine is the edge on the arrowheads? I have heard, perhaps wrongly, that flint is capable of taking and maintaining a molecular edge.
Great experiment, Billy! I have hunted and found American Indian arrow heads (points) all my life and have often times wondered about the "old" way of viewing these points. As you described, I was always told that the small "bird points" were used for just that: birds, but I felt the big "field clunkers" were just too large and cumbersome to actually be efficient as an arrow point. Your proof through experimentation has concluded what 'books' of speculation could not. Thank you!
Great video and great information. I know you were rating the penetration by the distance it travelled out the opposite side of the deer .But all but one i consider Full penetration. I was wondering though what was the yardage you were shooting from?
I really liked the video Billy! All of your videos have been great and i have learned a ton! Have you made a video about how to create the stone points in detail? If you haven't that is just a suggestion, and would be a great idea Thanks
How far where you shots in the video ? and on the deer you took while hunting this way, was it from the ground or a tree stand and how far were those shots ?
Well done, 10 out of 10 for quality and content. This is why we should all enjoy any information source freely shared on the web. I learned something new today, from you. Thank you.
@toemag Thanks so much! Glad you liked the video, and I'm glad you learned something. If people learn something from what I post then I have achieved my goal.
Great video...hard to deny how lethal those small "bird" points are. Proof is rght there on the screen and the sheer fact that we're here today because of those small "bird" points. Thanks for the video.
Good work Billy. I think your shooting was to good. Could the 2nd and 3rd arrow have piggy backed along your first one's wound canal? You can't deny the effectiveness of those "bird point" which may have to be renamed simply "hunting points"
Thanks for the great video and I hope to see more in the future.
Radioactiveroach: I've played around with primitive bows and arrows quite a bit. I don't know what Billy's bows are capable of, but I would put my effective range for one of my crude 40 pound bows at maybe 30 yards if the arrow was heavy enough. A longer shot might be effective, but I've never tried one. A realistic maximum range for me with my level of accuracy and fairly primitive gear is probably more like 15 to 20 yards. Best wishes...
