I read on Wikipedia that the male is the one who does the bonding. Male anglerfish are small and weak, and finding food is just about as hard as finding a mate when you're not armed for it. So, once they finally find a female, they meld on themselves. Their entire purpose in birth is to breed females. The female feeds them, they do their job. Even if they become brainless and immobile as a result. I doubt they were wired to think that hard.
