Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but if space is a vacuum (no atmosphere), what are those Space Shuttle attitude adjuster rockets pushing against when they fire? If the thrust is caused by a combustion burn there would need to me air for that thrust to push against creating the pitch/attitude change. Could it be that our Space Shuttles aren't really going into space and that those NASA funds are actually being used for something else? How can there be thrust with no air to push against?

Well I think the explanation NASA was trying to give was that the debris were very small and were actually only about 10 feet away from the camera, giving the illusion that they are much bigger and moving at much faster speeds. But yeah it still seems like a poor excuse, but still plausible.
