I remember my teacher in elementary school put this on for us to watch; after watching it due to my name being William the kids use to say "a doll, a doll, William wants a doll" to me on the play ground. I must of gotten in over 15 fights due to this stupid cartoon; if I ever meet the person who made this cartoon I am going to kick his ass for the pain and suffering I went through as a child due to this cartoon.
this movie was very groundbreaking and challanged the gender and sex stereotypes and how to accept people for who they are and not to judge them based on very old stereotypes and opionions put forth by society.
im born in 1990 this came out in 74, 21 today this movie/special defines my childhood re discovering it in 2011 fucking amazing been into mash for years just realized alan alda was key in this makes this even better
I grew up with my sisters' Barbie dolls and my big sis got me a JEM doll for my birthday and couldn't have been happier... this video is amazing. (we watched it in womens' studies' class in 1996) THANK YOU for posting!
I love this. I work in a PreK room and one day a father came in with his three kids, one a baby. His boys immediately went to the baby dolls and began to feed them. The dad said (holding the baby), "I didn't know you guys could feed babies" and I was just thinking, "...duh?"
I'm a mother of a wonderful son who once had a doll that he loved and took care of. He has grown into a kind and loving young man. This made me get all teary because it's so sweet.
When watching this in first grade, our teacher tried to instill a message that "just about anything can be for both a girl or boy." I didn't say it aloud, but I wanted to ask, "what about a dress?"
@abysmalatrocious: Go try telling that to a Scotsman wearing a kilt. :p Or my little brother. Manliest guy on earth; still loved all my dresses when he was a kid. (Or doing my makeup. I almost bought him a doll for that so he wouldn't put nasty makeup on ME. :p)
Some of my classmates thought it was scary, how all the other kids were scowling, especially with "larger heads," when doing the "A doll, a doll, William wants a doll" part.
The day I see women again (as they were 100 years ago) being riddiculed for wearing pants, suitcoats, ties, baseball hats, t-shirts, driving pick-ups/SUV's, or a hundred other things that "belong to" men, then maybe I'll agree a guy shouldn't touch anything pink or flower-patterned with a 10-foot pole!
my mother used to play this for me and i had a doll to brings back memories it brought tears to my eyes too my doll was named joey and it had male private parts joey civic
When I was a kid, this song inspired me to want to be a father someday. The first time I watched this with my son on my lap and every time I've heard it since, it makes me tear up. Thanks, Alan Alda and Marlo Thomas.
@shortordersamurai You know what I like to say? Free to be you and Me, Three Little Pigs, take your pick, are kid AND adult books/shows. It's a matter of whether you view it from the perspective of a 5 year old, 15, 25, 35, 55, 65, 75 years of age, etc. If you read books your son has, that WE read as kids (I'm 38, so probably around your age), it's incredible how differently we view the same story, as adults.
@JohnnyHousno A doll is the last thing kids need to give them an example of parenthood. It's counterproductive. a real baby cries, pulls hair, and has needs. Dealing with a doll is NOTHING like dealing with a child. If you want to teach a kid to parent have them help with younger family members. All kids should learn from a young age what parenting is all about. Not some silent doll that's easy to hold.
My grandmother used to sing this song to me but I never knew where it came from and I haven't heard it since she died. Hearing it again just now brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for uploading.
Haven't seen this in probably 20 years, brought back a pleasant memory of watching it. Thanks!

Perhaps if boys played with dolls and less with guns and soldiers we'd have less violence and less wars in this world.

I'm surprised William's friends fuss at him instead of laughing at him. I'm also surprised they fuss at him when his grandma's w/ him.
