Im not going to argue that this is not Rob playing but at very least I will say this is not the final bass track on the album. It does not stay clear all way through, to have a final take and of quality performance each note should be clear. Leave it to mixing to adjust volume ect
iv been a metallica fan since i was 6 yrs old.and a bass player for years also.cliff, jason and rob are all great bass players but robs bass playing gives me goosebumps.although cliff was very creative and skillfull in my opinion rob is the best tallica ever had.
@megaluisdeth finally someone who knows what they're talking about when it comes to Metallica's bassist. Rob by far has the best bass tone out of all the bassist. I was whatever about Rob till i heard him live. I jizzed in my pants when he played Ride the Lightning near the beginning of their setlist.
Can you guys here the sound starting at 0:23? there is a low sound coming from back and slowy fades then come again. Is that a bass effect? If that is ı realy liked it
YOu need a five string bass. All you do is strum really fast on the low b string at the seventh fret or somewhere up there and just slide down. I watched Rob do it live. You slide down once and then go up real fast then slide down slowly again while strumming. It's not hard at all really. You have to listen to the song for the timing.
@Worrier316 well DUHH!! i mean, if this was your first record with Metallica, im pretty sure you bust your ass off to write songs that..."suit" Metallica lol
Cliff made the stage his woman, He knew how to work the stage. Jason had those crazy back up vocals that just worked amazing. And Rob brings this gritty, powerful tone with him. All three are such great bassists.
The bass line in this song is freaking sexy.

Jason was a great composer, but J and L didn't allow him to compose anything. That's why he left actually.

@Maidenhead1996 And the few he did write on they screwed up, like My Friend of Misery, which would've been awesome as just a bass solo.
jurnag12 7 months ago
@jurnag12 What? Rob didn't write My Friend of Misery. That was Jason. And he actually just composed the bass solo.
