Great song but with all versions of this song being fairly standard (no extended jams) this recording is not nearly as good as others let alone "best ever". Vocals on this are somewhat in the background. The 1980 "reckoning" version is probably the best recording IMO. All live acoustic and was being recorded for release.
Anyhow to anwser the question someone asked this is 2/20/71 at the Capitol Theatre in Port chetser, NY.
wow what a beautiful preempt the approaching hour!!!!! blessings to all the peaceful ones-may we pass our smiles on to the lost/uneducated/struggling souls. God Bless The Grateful Dead N God Bless Us All!!!!!! ONE LOVE.......
What's really wierd about this song is that the chord progression is used in a song at the end of the movie "Nashville" . Except the mindset is totally whacked when the girl starts singing, :It Don't Worry Me, It Don't Worry Me, You can Say That I Ain't Free, But It Don't Worry Me....." scared hell out of me...
When my daughter was 5 days old she almost didn't make it and as I sat with her in my arms rocking her in the hospital I realized that nothing else in my life up to that point mattered. I wanted to sing to her and the first song that came to my head was Ripple, I sang to her over and over for 3 days....she is now 7 years old, and a true hippie at heart....she is sittin on my bed right now coloring with a tye-die shirt on singing every word to thissong! thank you Jerry you are truely magic

@wahoobob100 just their opinions ;}. To be honest I have no idea how somebody can dislike a song as magical as this, or really any Dead song...but thats how it goes :}.
Yea, with me, I was painting my folks' house in Lakewood, listening to a Dead tape I had made off of vinyl and "other" tapes given me by DH friends. China Doll played and then the rest of Mars Hotel in random order - my Mom leaned out of the window and said "who is that? They're great! Play that again!" When I said that's the Dead, she said "They sound pretty alive to me!" Even my Mom loved Jerry and friends...
my 2 and 3yr old kids know every word to this song.I sing it to them on a regular basis I feel it has a great message and introduce's them to the greatest band ever
i recieved the poster on the video a couple months after jerry passed on. it was produced by VW. it is b/w with a light blue tear out of the headlight. Even VW appreciated the genius of Jerry Garcia!! ....if I knew the way I would take you Home!

One realizes just how much this song gave when it's over and the room seems empty and the night too quiet. Yes, it's sing along and that's just fine!!
As this song resonates throughout my head I'm confronted with distinct memories of the past. The good ole' Grateful Dead days... Oh how I wish they weren't gone.
Anyone else get teared up when they hear this? I cried a little bit I must say... There's just something about that beautiful voice of jerry's and that young picture of him that gets me. RIP Jerry, let there be songs to fill the air!
@nigsvon There is not a thing wrong around tearing up about it. I wonder many a time how I missed this part of life, and wistfully thing about what could have been. Admitting to the emotions, shedding some tears, and having joy, puts you in a better place than those who never knew
i grew up in eugene oregon and every year before the dead would come to town the deadheads would show up and i would see old friends that i hadn't seen in a long while , and then the show come and the feelings of being part of something would hit and we would all sing along with jerry and the boys. man i miss them days and what good times we all had . jerry we miss you man ! and to all my deadhead brothers and sisters out there ...............peace and love, miss you all.
@NashleeSanders21 Religions just point you in a right direction. That is the teachings, not the followers. Once you see a right direction, then you may see your right direction, which is the really right direction that all of us must take......
Everyone has a favorite version of songs. That's what a part of music is a about.Maybe your version not someone els's.It's all good :)... it's what you feel on the inside from it.Miss my friends I met along the road but will always be in my heart.I feel sorrow and joy after all these years.Peace my Brothers and Sisters.......
Very nice visuals! Very creative and pretty! I'm saving this...I've been trying my hand at making a few vids, but it's much harder than I ever knew! Nice work * - *
@hermitwoof2 Whoa! I was just thinking the same thing myself!! Was wondering if it might be my cheap speakers...but apparently not...it's a shame...Ripple's always been my favorite one-
long may the dead live, in all our hearts and memories. i pity those who never got to experience the unique vibes of a dead concert. omg . . . one time i wound up being accosted on the way to the bathroom, by these two cute babes, bec/ i was wearing a fabled "lamina," and all they wanted was to convince me (guess how?) to give it up, so they could get at jerry or bobby. alas, my girlfriend awaited me w/ baited breath, so that one never happened, but man . . . those were good times
I am 60 yrs old. Most mornings when driving my now 32 yr old doctor son to high school with his friends, I had Gr.Dead blasting on my tape player.. one morning his friends commented, in great awe, "how cool it is that your Mom likes the Gr. Dead". My son proudly explained to the younguns that, "This is HER ERA! This is HER music, you guys! She used to watch'em play in Golden Gate Park in San Fran in the 1970's ! " He was so proud, and I of him. God, I miss Garcia. So-o-o sorry he is gone....
@alienhuman couldn't be more wrong ....Vegas was up all night and so were we ....The Dead were a lot of things ...but they were ALWAYS a party :) Cheers
when I was 17 I was in the parking lot while the dead were playing the stadium. I thought I would have many other chances to see them. Jerry died soon after that. This is my favorite song.
For me, even this discussion is a little silly. If you are there, if you get it, if you miss Jerry, if his death makes you cry just thinking about him, then there you are.. I love the new tours and Furthur is great, no doubt, but..... These things are always difficult..
this song was performed 364 days after I was born. I saw the Dead 4 times in Vegas and each time was a memory that I will never forget, but the biggest memory was when the stadium was struck by lightning and all of us holding on to the railing sure got a different kind of high :~) then after Sting performed The Dead came out to a rainbow. A memory that will last forever
Woodstock '69 was no Peace and Love fest like they say it was.
Pete Townsend of The Who whacked Abby Hoffman in the head with his guitar neck and then said, ''anybody gets on my fucking stage I'll kill them''. and there was many a fight all over the place. and many arrests...people were just so spaced out who knows what fucking show they saw. people was ripping each other off, etc. its all cutout of the Documentary though to make believe that everybody was cool, Hippie propaganda.
you cant say anything is the best, there r so many grate songs, years late 60's 71 74 77 etc....i guess this is your favorite version,coooooll..cool vid ty for posting
No Jerry sorry but I can hardly hear your voice come through the music, fix the volume!

@wolfpaws652 Listening through lap top speakers dosen't qualify you to judge audio quality.
it gets louder because the mic moves positions for a better mix. This is nothing compared to the compressed commercials we're blasted with today.

NashleeSanders21 1 year ago 5
@NashleeSanders21 Religions just point you in a right direction. That is the teachings, not the followers. Once you see a right direction, then you may see your right direction, which is the really right direction that all of us must take......

Why are all the Dead videos so crappy sounding and faint?
hermitwoof2 1 year ago

So-o-o sorry he is gone....

when I was 17 I was in the parking lot while the dead were playing the stadium. I thought I would have many other chances to see them. Jerry died soon after that. This is my favorite song.

I've just listened to this track about 10 times in succession - superb!
Grateful Dead churned out a lot of material - a lot was fairly ordinary; but ' Ripple' and 'Ramble On Rose' are out of this world.

My Dad is a dead head and he sang this to me when I was little (They are just great)
mrthefreak85 1 year ago 3
For me, even this discussion is a little silly. If you are there, if you get it, if you miss Jerry, if his death makes you cry just thinking about him, then there you are.. I love the new tours and Furthur is great, no doubt, but..... These things are always difficult..

not many songs are a constant for 40 years. guiding star!
japerist 1 year ago
this song was performed 364 days after I was born.
