I had to have my dash taken off to replace a blend door actuator. So my car was already 10-years old- so I had them put in a new heater core for only the cost of the heater core. It was a Lincoln Town Car. Now it has been almost 10-years and my blend door is starting to mess up at times. I have to run and clear it with the self-test. If the dash comes off- I will always put in a new heater core.
will this work for a 97 grand prix.gtp. I getting sick of not having heat lol. I already have the part I just don't know where to start and how to do it.
if you pull the dash up far enough you dont need to cut it out of the way just more work this video is a waste of your time and energy dont bother watcher
i just change mine in a 2003 touring model flex fuel the hoses are the hardest part
I wonder if you can just simply backflow the core from the outlet port on the firewall & flush it out with some CLR & compressed air. Take the inlet hose & redirect it to an drain pan or something & clean all that gunk out of the little passages in the core?
I have the shifter in the center console and I dont know how to remove it to get too the blend door actuator. PLEASE HELP :( 2002 ford taurus sel.....winnipeg winters suck....
To remove the heater core hose used a hose clamp tool or needle nose vice grip and channel lock. Pinched the hose clamp from under the car & another person using a big screw driver from above slide the clamp forward. Used a channel lock rocking it left & right to break heater hose seal. With one person lifting the passenger dash side up did not have to remove the bracket. Save $750.
Did this short cut repair on a 2002 Ford Taurus yesterday. To disable the air bag, just pulled the fuse under dash & disconnected the neg. battery cable. It would be a good idea to take a picture of the linkage in front of the heater core cover with your cell phone to show how to put it back together. You will need a small screw driver to wedge inside the shaft of the linkage pivot to release it.
Just changed my heater core in my 1996 Mercury Sable using this advice. I bent the medal piece up with a set of linemen pliers instead of cutting. I was able to take it out myself but had to get my father in law to put it back in while I held the dash up for him. The hardest part was taking the hose off in the engine compartment. Those clips are a pain to get back so you can pull the hose. Total time to remove and install was 3 1/2 hours.
As with any repair, a mechanic must consider the original build process. This isn't something that you would necessarily want to discuss with a client, but may be necessary to get the job done.
Depends on the shop. If the work order calls for the job to be 5 hours and the mechanic gets it done in 3, he still gets paid for the 5 hours. That's the beast behind flat rate mechanics. It's also works in the customers interest that if you get a new mechanic that doesn't know all the tricks of the trade & takes him 10 hours to do the same job, The customer still only pays for the 5 hours.

I appreciate this video for I have to perfron the same oporation on a 1996 Taurus. If the '96 is any different than the one you demonstrated on, please let me know. I discovered a trick to clogged heater cores the first time I ran into one. Reversing the direction of the flow with just a bucket or pan or whatever works under the other side as to NOT send the debris into the radiator. Works, try it!
My son in law and I followed these directions this past weekend and changed out the heater core in his 2000 Ford Taurus with the only level of difficulty, getting the two hoses off the fire wall and I'm sure with the right tool, that problem would have been short lived. We didn't cut the bracket, just had to lift the dash up enough to pull the core out. For all the nay sayers who told us not to trust what you see on the internet, not in this case. We saved $700 labor in less than 4 hrs +lunch

One little note. That bracket is also one of the two points that retain the lower trim cover. (The one that covers the heater box and blower motor.) When you cut that off you have to find a new way to mount that cover.
Has anyone determined whether this applies to other generations of Taurus? From the comments and the video, it appears to work for Gen 3 ('96-'99) and Gen 4 ('00-'07). Anyone tried on earlier models?.
when i tur the vent in the hot side, only cool air comess out, it is not warm or hot at all. is there any thing that you can suggest to me? i already checked all the fuses and the relays , they're good.
@BrianBeamers ck under your dash and if you find that the tab was removed, you could make the argument that they took a short cut ,solely for gain [profit ] and since it takes only 1.5 to do. they owe you the difference and don't be surprise if they throw you out but if you send a letter from your lawyer ,that will be where it stops, because if a judge hears the case, its fraud. I know this because; at my shop we had a similar case
[ we repaired the part because couldn't find another so re building was the only option and so we did un-knowing to the owner. A few months later he had a incident that reveled it was a fixed part and he came back pissed off .we told him it was rebuilt because it was unable to replace and the cost of rebuilding was

Our lawyer said it's fraud and you'll have to payback plus court costs and even if we were right ,the courts lean towards the customer.
PLEASE READ FIRST FROM MY EARLIER POST ,DIDN'T REALIZED FIRST IS LAST AND LAST IS FIRST ! So take a few min and ck to see if the bracket is gone and if it is let them know. That you want to settle with an adjustment on the bill you may have to go back to them a couple of times so they can digest it .
What a quick fix took us about three hours and thanks for the tip. I have a 2005 Ford Taurus we couldn't find that little bracket on this model. The tough part was getting the hose clamps off the heater core. I'd be very gentle with the blender door snap lock that holds the lever and spring in place you don't want that to break off.

thank you for the tips on this, i got the heater core out i did not need to cut the tab off but simply lifted and pulled on the dash at the same time while getting he heater core out.
i was wondering if you can flush this out with a hose or do you have to take it out to unplug it.....my top hose is cold and bottom one is warm....gonna tackle this right away in 35 below weather,lol...gotta do what you gotta do....my daughters car.lol...good video
just take the hoses off of the heater core and replace with two other houses about 3 feet long, run one into a bucket, hold other hose in the air and fill with water, use an air blower stuck in the end of a tire valve with the core removed and GENTLY blow air is small controlled bursts. Too much air at once will blow your heater core, do this several times, than repaet the same process with the other hose. AGAIN, use SHORT GENTLE controled bursts of air or the heater core may rupture.

Worked Great!! I did exactly as described and it was easy. The hoses on the firewall are truly the most difficult part. I recomend using a die cutter with a large cutting wheel, i had a small one and it took forever. Also you want someone to help lift the dash as you change out the heater core. I pulled and installed the new heater core and only had to lift the dash once and put it back thanks to having a helper. Good Video!!!!!!!!!
Did it no problem 01 Taurus. Didn't cut the bracket still no problem. The hose clamps on the firewall have the tabs pointing down and that's what makes them hard to get off. I took a small screw driver and rotated then to point up and that made it easy. Might be worth buying the clamp tool though.
As an ex repair shop owner I really appreciate this tip. I just so happen to have to replace the core on my son's 01 taurus, and this tip will mean I can do it rather than see my boy get hosed at some shop!
@jeepluv76 lol yeah kinda made me cringe seeing that but a light plastic glove box shouldn't scratch the metal roof. Still not a good idea to use the customers roof as a work bench. either wayl a great video by a great technician.
I noticed my car starting to have a urine smell to it during the summer when I would run the a/c. My heater worked ONE time this winter, then never again. Perhaps a leak in the heater core is cause for both these issues?
I'll check fuses first, then hoses, and so on. Then I'll simply replace this heater core if all else fails.
What a great video, thanks for the advice. I usually break the heater core connections off, of cut them if possible then deal with them when I can get the hoses uyp to where I can work on them.
Be careful removing the actuator for the blend motor the plastic will break .There is a little plastic part that will break if you don't swing it up as you slide the core out. If hoses are also old just cut them, the part is not that expensive anymore. I needed a helper to lift dash as I pulled core out and installed new one. Saved me ~$800 Thanks !
This is why you shouldn't ignore performing coolant maintenance at regualar intervals, so you can avoid a nightmare like pulling a dashboard. BTW, throwing the glovebox right on top of a customers car; not cool. And open sparks from a die grinder in a carpeted interior are a fire begging to happen.
I did this on a 1996 Taurus about a year ago and it took about 50 minutes the first time. The original heater core was leaking.Put it back together and had no heat. Pulled heater core back out and it was defective. The company didn't punch out the end of the tube in the new heater core. Always blow through the new heater core when you get a new one. I've done hundreds of these over the years and always blow through them to make sure they aren't plugged. Second time was about 25 minutes.
Great video for removing the actual core. However, I'm still stuck on getting the hoses off the core. You mentioned this is the hardest part, and I agree. Any chance you can show us how you did it? Is there a special tool we can use, or is it just plain muscle?
@stettlerc -This tool is one of the best for hard to reach clamps.
Craftsman Cable Operated Hose Clamp Pliers
Sold by Sears Sears item # 00947390000 Mfr.model # 28650-998
There is also 2 nuts holding the hose assembly to the fire wall.Follow the brackets from the hose assembly to find them. On passengers side behind AC switch and drivers side next to brake booster near center of firewall.
@stettlerc What I always do when it's really stuck is..take a box knife and slit the hose right where it fits over the heater box tubes. .Then just grab the biggest channel locks you got and twist it real good and pull like a mad man. Even if you gotta replace the hoses it's worth it..Good luck.
I just finished replacing a heater core in a 1988 Ford Crown Victoria station wagon.5.0 L V-8.Wow what a job.I hope I never have to do this again.I'd rather remove an engine out of a car than do one of those heater cores again.
I know this is a Ford but what I have is an old 1994 cadi and the heater core went out. But low and behold the darn thing is PLASTIC! One of the main valves where the hoses clamp to broke off and made a mess inside. Well I've by passed it for now but want to replace the heater core. Is it the simular process to replace it as in your video??
Being a female, this was so helpful. This short cut saved me at least $465 from the auto shop to fix. Thanks, this makes it so much more easier to get to my heater core and replace it without having a auto mechanic do it for me to wipe out my bank account.
would this work for a 98 mustang?? im gonna try and do it myself so i wont have to pay 480 for a mechanic to do it! someone please give me some tips and hints.. thanks
thanks for your video, it really helped me out with my heater core replacement. Mechanic wanted to charge me 350.00 dollars!! I did it , and only cost me a few bucks.
i can do this job in 2 hrs without cutting anything off it takes 5 minutes to drop the column and pull the dash up. never use a cutting wheel inside a car you"ll scald the carpet or melt a wire don't be a butcher like this idiot
Was helping a friend change the heater core on his 02 Taurus. We had not seen this video prior to the job. Now I wish we did! We took that whole black box out after freon evacuated. Was wondering what that access panel was on the box...now I know!
great video , i have a 2001 mittsubihi galant. heater core is shot , windshield fogs and coolant evaporating in system. periodicaly have to replace fluid . was leaking but bars and leaks is plugging it up temporarily .overall car runs great...
would this technique work on my car ? thank you /....
I ve had a pluged up situation in my 98 ford expedition, I fixed it by un hooking the lines from under the hood and taking my water hose and blowing water through it, hot water at that to help break up the build up of that crap
Thank you very much for this very valuable tip/shortcut. Any possibility you could shoot a video of the bracket cut? It seems these darn brackets come in several flavors. A close up of where to cut would help a lot even if the bracket is slightly different.... BTW, anyone done anything with aftermarket headers/performance controls, heads, etc. with this beast? Thank you again.
I used this method today on my 2002 Ford Taurus. It worked flawlessly. The only hard part was getting the clamps and hoses off the heater core. Once that was done the rest was a breeze...I replaced the clamps with screw on clamps...easier IMO. I have heat!
Awesome!! you saved my soooooooo much time and money!! Thank you a billion times!!!!! Stupid little bracket, who knew!! Did it myself in an hour and a half!!! Works great!!

just take the hoses off of the heater core and replace with two other houses about 3 feet long, run one into a bucket, hold other hose in the air and fill with water, use an air blower stuck in the end of a tire valve with the core removed and GENTLY blow air is small controlled bursts. Too much air at once will blow your heater core, do this several times, than repeat the same process with the other hose. AGAIN, use SHORT GENTLE controlled burst of air or the heater core may rupture.

i have a 2000 ford ford Taurus n i was woring how long does heating core last
Keven93 1 year ago
Worked Great!! I did exactly as described and it was easy. The hoses on the firewall are truly the most difficult part. I recomend using a die cutter with a large cutting wheel, i had a small one and it took forever. Also you want someone to help lift the dash as you change out the heater core. I pulled and installed the new heater core and only had to lift the dash once and put it back thanks to having a helper. Good Video!!!!!!!!!
mgleason41 1 year ago

@jeepluv76
Ha I was thinking the same thing when I watched this video.
Flyingpants82 3 months ago
This is awesome! My car only blows cold air.
Excellent video. Thumbs up!

Con I do the same for a 1995 Taurus?
GinnyC1961 1 year ago
What a great video, thanks for the advice. I usually break the heater core connections off, of cut them if possible then deal with them when I can get the hoses uyp to where I can work on them.
505197 1 year ago
I doubt it. They are very different body styles
windynabbie 1 year ago
@windynabbie but the heater core is in the same place ? as a matter of fact , there is much more room under a towncars dash .
chapinrey 1 year ago
Be careful removing the actuator for the blend motor the plastic will break .There is a little plastic part that will break if you don't swing it up as you slide the core out. If hoses are also old just cut them, the part is not that expensive anymore. I needed a helper to lift dash as I pulled core out and installed new one. Saved me ~$800 Thanks !
windynabbie 1 year ago
@windynabbie will this method work on a 1998 towncar ?

@windynabbie Guilty...superglue...LOL

Is there a special tool we can use, or is it just plain muscle?
stettlerc 1 year ago
@stettlerc -This tool is one of the best for hard to reach clamps.
Craftsman Cable Operated Hose Clamp Pliers
Sold by Sears Sears item # 00947390000 Mfr.model # 28650-998
There is also 2 nuts holding the hose assembly to the fire wall.Follow the brackets from the hose assembly to find them. On passengers side behind AC switch and drivers side next to brake booster near center of firewall.
1spark2 1 year ago

Thanks.

Being a female, this was so helpful. This short cut saved me at least $465 from the auto shop to fix. Thanks, this makes it so much more easier to get to my heater core and replace it without having a auto mechanic do it for me to wipe out my bank account.

would this work for a 98 mustang?? im gonna try and do it myself so i wont have to pay 480 for a mechanic to do it! someone please give me some tips and hints.. thanks

i can do this job in 2 hrs without cutting anything off it takes 5 minutes to drop the column and pull the dash up. never use a cutting wheel inside a car you"ll scald the carpet or melt a wire don't be a butcher like this idiot
drpas10 1 year ago
@drpas10 Fair 'nuff, why not make a video of that method?
I don't see anything so wrong with this, cover the carpet, survey your work and move stuff that's in the way...should be simple, right?

I ve had a pluged up situation in my 98 ford expedition, I fixed it by un hooking the lines from under the hood and taking my water hose and blowing water through it, hot water at that to help break up the build up of that crap

Do Ford explorers use these same sort of brackets? Would it work on those also?
skyshock21 2 years ago
