One of the most exciting choral works that I've performed...(with a paid orchestra) and while I love this work and looked forward to a stellar performance, the Violin I's were not spot on in their intro.(within the first 10 bars), which led to more of the same, poor intonation, and the brass...omg..sorry to the 2,674 likes...LOVE the piece!!!! but gotta dis this performance.
this is amazing... im a 14 year old horn player and Im gonna play this whole thing while on tour in europe... this is a bigger challenge than i thought
As a kid, one of my dreams was to perform this work as a timpanist. Although I took a separate path (into photography, actually lol), I'm glad to see Jeffery Thomas, and the musicians he's conducting perform this work so well.
I love watching conductor Jeffrey Thomas. He has such an understated way of capturing the mood at the particular moment. By the way, anybody else hear bumblebees at 19:00?
woa im only 13 and i love this music didn't think i liked it but i herd it off this film battle royale and its so amazing the second sequence !!!
Woah sólo tengo 13 y me encanta esta música no creo que le gustaba, pero me manada que fuera la película Battle Royale y es tan increíble la segunda secuencia!
@ChaosDynamics Well, Verdi did get a good musical education at a conservatory, although he kept the rejection letter he got from the Milan Conservatory (the top conservatory in Italy) for the rest of his life. So I am sure he knew a good deal about musical history. However, he was famous for saying that he did not like to listen to others' music, because he felt it got in the way of his own. So I'm sure he knew the others' music, but didn't like to admit it!
I sang this work about 8 years ago in the Royal Albert Hall in London with 5,000 singers, the huge Albert Hall organ, professional soloists and a full orchestra - all conducted by David Willcocks. I didn't come down to earth for 3 days after. I just wandered around in a daze with a silly grin on my face! I'm singing it again in Winchester Cathedral at the end of November this year and even in rehearsal with only 120 singers and a piano it still blows my mind.
@Tridhos Verdi described himself as agnostic and not atheist. He was originally a catholic, but turned away from the church. He would actually drive his wife to church and not accompany her inside.
The requiem aternum at 1.15mins is excellent....a little fast but beautiful colour and phrasing....she has the power and breath...I don't get the hurry ....sometimes slow and controlled is very difficult....the only gal I know who can do quiet low slow with power then soar to the heavens is Miss Jessey norman....this mezzo carries it well and dose a great job at 1.17.30 with an almost spitting agression of expression....if she is reading this ever ...Brava!
This is completely awesome, it is the beauty of God displayed through a visionary that wrote it to display the glory of God through every day people that God created to be in His own image using the gifts that God has given to us broken people who have eternity written written in our hearts.
@silverideas I think you will find that Verdi was an atheist. Just because he wrote this great music doesn't mean that he believed in god any more than J K Rowling's believes in her fairy tales.
A wonderful performance! It brought me back to 1968 when I sang in chorus in performance of this piece with the Honolulu Symphony under Robert Lamarchini.
I love this channel just because of the full concerts posted here :D Wish I could watch this orchestra performing Mozart's full requiem, which in my opinion is better than Verdi's.

My Dad trained me to understand that viewing a presentation like this one is "identically the same" as being in Heaven. "Thank you, Merciful G-d. Amen."
@shrewsyd much longer than that. i'm not with this production, but i performed it at my own college (along with mozart's requiem a week after! -___-' ). it took a good three months and even then, even though we sounded amazing, it felt as if we had JUST gotten it down less than a week before the concerts, it was that intense.
@EriktheRedo But then too, don't forget many youngsters can no longer read, or do math; and know nothing about American history. Ask any university teacher. Starting about 30 years ago, young people in America are graduated from high school who are functionally illiterate. It isn't surprising that they don't have the capacity to hear or experience true beauty. After all, it does take a little work to understand great art. They will never find greatness in Hip-Hop.
@BillSalem I have noticed a definite correlation between intellect and taste in music, but to say any is lower or higher intelligence-wise is definitely a mistake, and that's only a general thing; intellect and taste in music aren't directly connected. I like how you said 'capacity' rather than 'intelligence'.
@BillSalem "They will never find greatness in Hip-Hop." Even as I sit enjoying Verdi, I have to disagree. I'm not much of a hip-hop fan myself, but I'm capable of recognizing that some of the best stuff can possess stunning rhythmic and verbal complexity and creativity. Maybe I shouldn't pick Eminem as my example just because so many understandably find the content distasteful, but the guy can do amazing things with that filthy mouth. Finally, though, it's an apples & oranges comparison.
Thank you for putting up the full Requiem. My school is performing this and I really wanted to hear what it sounded like. I love it but it seems to loose intesity after the Dies Irae. That might just be me though.
While I drunk, I pleauser it, but it's wonderful while I N0T drunk.
