@TyrannisSicSemper Hell yeah, I'm sadly oscillating between all sorts of positions, I think I'll either end up as a boring social democrat or a dictator of a country with an average temperature of 23°C.
@KYSNB Many people don't like the way Columbus treated the indigenous people when he "discovered" the America's. Couple that with the fact he thought he was in India I can see why people would say Fuck Columbus.
@buzz851 Well any body can make a mistake as far as him thinking he was in India. Shit they thought the world was flat back then right. LMFAO. But yeah I get what your sayin.
It's not about him thinking it was India. Columbus was a colonizer who led Spanish expeditions to steal and conquer Native American lands. He captured slaves and his actions led to one of the bloodiest mass murders in history, that of the North/South American natives who are STILL largely mistreated.
@ChrisnSnoop Key word bein expeditions. That's a party of more than just him so I'm sayin. Single out one person from a time that was filled with people just like him? Man I did graduate. I was probablly drunk when I made the comment and being sarcastic.
@MoonLightFacade not to bug u man , but whats so good about market systems in the first place? before public police corporations in the united states used to use private detective agencies to break up unions. but the worlds already wrapped in hell anyways , whatever
@MyEmoWaffle Nah, no worries dude. Market systems definitely aren't perfect, but the thing about economics is that it's purely subjective: there is no good nor bad. The ideal civilization is one which allows complete economic freedom by allowing settlements and large urban areas to function via their own political and economical rules. Unfortunately, this can only be accomplished in a government willing to grant such powers, or an anarchistic civilization.
Mao's administration turned into a one-party capitalist state that suppresses any political dissent or attempt at unionization. Without democracy, there's no difference between fascism and socialism.
Yeah, American blacks are totally disenfranchised, but at the same time they need capital and education as much as, or more than, redistribution. And I don't know if its a race thing so much anymore. Poor people are fucked in this country.
@hymnofashes I disagree with your vision of Mao as the installment of capitalism didnt occur until after his death.
Anyway although the issue in the USA is ultimately class, we must understand there's still racism, including institutional racism in the USA.
Obama is just a puppet for the capitalist class.
Obama's presidency doesnt mean a thing because the capitalists are still in power and they are mostly white and dont give a fuck about black people or proletarians in the USA.
@ShutYaBloodclot My point is that doesn't matter much that Mao was nominally communist because he created a rigid class society just like the Soviets did, and even today its a rigid class society. Maybe your'e right and I'm glossing over too much.
Obama does mean SOMEthing. He's a capitalist puppet, sure, but a racist? I doubt much 'institutional racism' will be caused by Obama.
If Obama is a puppet and he aint opposing inst racism, how could he NOT perpetrate inst racism? Might as well be a white guy over there in the white house. Its not his fault, he's just a politician in a political system of violence. Whats he gone do anyway? Give the red race their land back? Fuck no.
they make all whites look bad, spoiled . and stupid in hollywood. Similaril, they make us black people look like gangsters and fake gangsters at that:(.
@NationalPopularism Hollywood makes black people look like buffoons, like Eddie Murphy, or casts an oreo as the token black in every other kind of movie.
They are so race-conscious a lot of the time that it ruins the storytelling.
Hollywood itself is spoiled and stupid and white, and ends up making movies about itself, even when they aren't thinking about race. 90% of whites are poor, but the entire ruling class is white and Hollywood peddles the fantasy of class mobility to the rest.
Mao also is responsible for a government that smashes down on human rights activists and censors the internet. Good job Mao and all other communists of the world.
@ECWUSA1995 smashing Nazis, and greedy selfish bastards, and religious fundamentalists is against human rights? they are against human rights, Mao was for True Human rights and Democracy.
Censorship is the problem with the communist party of china and Deng xiao ping, the deformation/revisionism of china created such issues, it also seeked to blend into capitalism.
Mao was a great leader, revolutionary, anti-fascist guerilla fighter and tactician, philosopher, and communist theorist.

These guys are more ill informed than ten-thousand college jerk-offs in Ché shirts. They probably mean well, but this group is beat. Not dead prez stick-up-the-ass-hypocritical-beat, but misguided. Art and politics are mutually exclusive.
Ps Feel free to mouth off, call me an idiot, fag or whatnot.
Art and politics are mutually exclusive?? Right, because no literature from, say, Chaucer onwards, has had any sort of political and also been a credible artistic work. I'd direct you to absolutely anything by George Orwell, Joyce's short story 'Ivy Day in the Commitee Room', Blake's humanist masterpiece 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell', Swift's 'Gulliver's Travels', and Godwin's fantastic 'Caleb Williams', aka 'Things As They Are.' There are plenty of others, but they'd make a good start.
And, from the world of music, any and all Rage Against the Machine, Nas, The Clash, much of Radiohead, including 'You and Whose Army' and 'Electioneering', Arcade Fire's 'Windowsill', Muse's 'Black Holes and Revalations' album, most of NWA's stuff, all of Public Enemy's stuff, Minor Threat, The Specials, The Jam. I'll shut up now.
(1/3) I'm not saying that a work of art cannot convey other addition values, values with intellectual and/or emotional heft. However if it's really art then those values will play a secondary role. We may praise a piece for its cultural insights, the progressive statement it makes makes, or the courageous stand it takes, but to honor it as "art" when its aesthetic impact is not its dominant feature is to fall into a philistine trap of shoddy semantics and false emphasis.
(2/3) Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy that deals with our powers of sensory perception; more specifically, with how we attempt to understand and evaluate the external phenomena registered by our eyes and ears. When the composition that delights, thrills, captivates, or challenges our sensory receptors has been created for that very purpose we call it "art".
My statements were not a view, but definitions. A view would be opinions. The definitions stated previously were part of a essay published by Bantam. I found them useful in illustrating my point.
I see trolling as harassing, badgering, and possibly off topic comments, with the purpose of eliciting an emotional responses. My purpose was purely critical and on topic.
How can aesthetics not communicate politics too? It seems like you have a very narrow-minded few of art that fetters any investigation into culture and focuses on a surface form. Art is also a form of communication too, zamg289.
Hip hop is musical poetry. Fans of the Coup appreciate the vibrancy of their sound, as well as the message they are conveying to their listeners. So no, politics and art are not "mutually exclusives."
Saying that art should be praised firstly as an aesthetic is the bourgeois definition of art. That definition is what perpetuates a culture of oppression. If art/culture is not liberated, people cannot be either.
Really guys. Its great to see and hear raw fresh egaging Minds mixing politics and real world survivalism. Word strategists care little for petty surface squabbling. Travel with them and learn for yourself, they aren't breast feeding anyone. You don't get, go get some for yourself. That is the whole nine yards of the point. But hey, what can a sister know right? Love these guys, power to them.
The Coup played one of the best shows I saw last year. They were fucking dope, and I got to meet Boots Riley after the gig. That cat's cool as Hell, man. I asked him who he was voting for, and he said he was planning on voting in the local propositions, but that he probably wasn't voting for a Republican.

When the composition that delights, thrills, captivates, or challenges our sensory receptors has been created for that very purpose we call it "art".

you're asserting your rather narrow view of what art is and what it should be as an attempt to shut down a point of view you dislike.
Trolling 101.
Get better.
