well basically all the numbers do is keep the islands magnetism at a certain level so that the island can remain unseen by the rest of the world as you know when desmond didnt push the buttons he actually caused the island to be seen and ended up having flight 815 crash on it but he put the fail safe key in and turned the island back to what it was causing the flight passengers to be stuck on the island and having the island hiiden to the outside world once again ....what a great show
