I think the reason that Evolved has been given such a bad rep is that people either hadn't played previous Front Mission games, or are a but offended it's not a turn based style. But the other thing is that Armoured Core has been doing 3rd person for quite some time before this was released. Overall it just lacked that Front Mission feel to it. It was still worth a few play throughs though. I still play it every now and then, since Chrome Hounds went all buggy.

I've always been a mech fan, and I did play the hell out of this game offline.However, the fact that some campaign missions REQUIRED you to have a certain object pissed me off, and I agree with the boss fights' difficulty. Customization was a big plus for me, but again, you couldn't always use the setup you wanted. I feel that this game could have done without the frequent armor boxes though. I'd give it a solid 6/10.

I'm not going to lie, I was disappointed by the storyline and enemies in Front Mission Evolved. The enemies were either to hard or to easy. The story line was bland in comparison of the earlier turn based versions of the game, and there was a lot less strategy involved. It kinda felt like run and gun the whole time. I hope this doesn't kill the series for the American market...

Ugggghhh, not every game has to be CALL OF DUTY OR HALO! If you go into every game with that mind set they're always going to fail to meet your expectations. At first I was turned off by this game til I actually played it. I'm a HUGE Gundam fan and this game felt like what a good Gundam game should be. Is this game a 10 for it's genre, no, but is it a great time for people who love giant robot games and battling like this. FUCK YES!!!

@TrueResting6 bosses are supposed to have a balance of difficulty, otherwise its not fun, if its too hard, and you get your ass handed to you like every 20 seconds because the game will only let you do things a certain way, then its not fun, but if its too easy, then you feel like jesus and get bored in 20 minutes, and if they( the game developers) try to put in something (third person foot missions) that sort of deviates from the original gameplay of the game, then they should make an effort

I bought it for $7.50 on steam since it's currently on sale. I'd say its not really a bad game: A fun, short, and interesting game. Square enix does what they do best: cheesy as hell dialogue, TONS of cutscenes, and forgettable stories. If you're going to buy this game, get the discounted PC version off of steam. Otherwise you'd be better off getting Armored Core for the Xbox. But honestly, for the discounted price this game is pretty decent. 7.5/10 :P
Armoured Core is so much better. Brilliant graphics, fun gameplay, amazing customisation, more weapons, better story and some insane fights... Nice review by the way, its nice how you backed up what you said with actual game footage.

Wow, this game doesn't look very good compared to Armored Core or Phantom Crash. And Phantom Crash is an original xbox game!
plus, I thought your review was pretty fair, and I definitely see where your complaint comes from with the bad damage indicator thing. Like in Mass Effect 2 for instance, at least you can tell that your character feels the impact of every hit, and the screen has a good destress signal if you take severe damage. The nit-picky complaints from these people are retarded.

I don't see how the controller not vibrating when you get shot would be a problem. I turn off vibration on my controller. It's nothing but annoying. And if you're actually stupid enough to not notice your health bar going down. that's your problem, not the games
@Grecian92 You are taking what I said too literally... The problem was that there wasn't a good notification that you were taking damage. They could add better controller vibration, better screen effects or sound effects... The controller vibration was a suggestion, not a complaint for the lack of it.
@ZeitgeistReview seeing as this is more of a strategy game then a shooter, not having some kind of alert wouldn't be as big of a deal if you weren't acting like it is cod or halo.

I think you are very wrong. The game looks good on my T.V It plays great too. I had halo and played black. Halo was good I played the hell out of it. This game is ok for a mech game. Have you ever played the others like front mission 3 or 4? I think the problem is people don't think, you are in a big ass mech. They don't move like us they are not Gundam. I have had NO prob with the boss fight. Anyways keep doing what you do. LOL maybe you should get a new TV.
I don't think the review had any truth to it. Front Mission has ALWAYS been this way. If you play the former titles, you will quickly catch that Japanese cheese story, it's silly fun, it doesn't need to be that serious. The mechs looks awesome, they looked retarded in the ps2, and like drawings in the ps1, so I totally love how they renewed it. I do miss the battle system, it was turn based, oh well, they wanted something new, I can dig that. Besides, this game is more like a cult title. Cheers!

@ZeitgeistReview in the many previous front mission games, it was spelled Wanzer but pronounced Vanser. wanzer is a term that is derived from the German word "Wanderpanzer", or "walking tank". according to wiki. i figure the the reason they said "wanser" in the game is due to a lack of knowledge that double helix was given by square-enix.
I finished the game yesterday and my total time was 5.1 hours. I was very disappointed with the story as how Zeitgeist pointed out. Due to limited hours, the story had to be rushed. Ergo, the awkward speed love story. Although I know this is a spin off to a great series, this is not worth the $60 they have originally priced. I am still kind of debating to myself if it was even worth the $12.50 on Steam. Nevertheless, the game reminded me why I liked RPG over action game; the length play time.
looks a lot like armored core. I loved those games, but i only played them for the the multiplayer and the only reason i would play the single player is to unlock more weapons and armor for my mechs. since it doesnt seem like you have to play single player at all in order to unlock stuff for multiplayer, im very excited for this game
Hey Zeitgeis, I appreciate your review. I found your opinion very convincing to buy this on my PC since it's cheat now. I just want to remind everyone else in here that when buying games from oversees do remember that us Japanese likes repetitive things like grinding and re-do of boss fights, unlike in the states where fluid progression in the story and lots of reward feel.

Although the game is outdated in post rendered graphics, the game does have a sufficient ways to express their emotions using their semi-detailed facial expressions. The bosses are hard but it includes checks points and also the option to rebuild your Wanzers. So devs wanted us to die until we get the right type of strategy against them. This is very common in Japanese RPG/Strategy games. I would strongly recommend using keyboard and mouse for this.
this is gonna sound random, but have you played gotcha force? plenty of repetative crazy japanese gaming awesomeness there. (im trying to spread the word as capcom are considering making a sequel providing the first one gets enough of a fan base, plus its actually a good game)
isn't a triple aaa title a game of high production values and of great quality an sells well? black ops only sold well. the quality of that game is stupidly poor especially on the ps3 and the game is massivly over rated because it sold a tonne... compare it to quality real aa titles such as mgs 4, mass effect 2 even borderlands is a better game and you see my point in why you can't call it a triple aaa title because it sold alot.. thats my point.
Well ive played this game and it reminded me of AC4 but i still think this game was pretty awsome. The bosses do get REALLY reapetative and some of the cut scenes lack "momentom" like when dylans dad died he just said "no" a few times with no change of tone in his voice.... But i do really enjou the game but its a little bit tooooo limited. I mean when u beat the game u want to go back and play the first few levels with all armour and weapons but u cant..? I agree with most of the points made in the video, but... I'm not complaining about the graphics. It has good anti-aliasing. The only thing I would ask for is taking the shine out of the weapons so they don't look cartoony. Otherwise... Who needs all the overly used bloom and sepia tones anyway?
One thing that the (almost dead now) multiplayer REALLY has going for it, is amazing sync! It might be the only game where you can get 10 players with 1 bar and see no stuttering.
@FDJustin ... However, the mech balance is really weird. Light mechs can equip heavier weapons and move faster, making most people think that using a heavy torso (defines your speed) is gimped.
And when you consider that most players use two homing missile packs, and usually two more weapons, while retaining the ability to dodge you, it really is.
Speaking of missiles, expect to see them constantly. They're just too good, and too easy to equip on the ubiquitous lighter frames.
From what I have played of this game it is a very fun experience. the graphics are one of the best for a mech game and it has a great variaty being able to get out of mech and battle on foot. I would give it 9 out of 10!

Overall, it pales in comparison to the newer Armored Core games, which I wouldn't even give a 9/10.

I bought it for $7.50 on steam since it's currently on sale. I'd say its not really a bad game: A fun, short, and interesting game. Square enix does what they do best: cheesy as hell dialogue, TONS of cutscenes, and forgettable stories. If you're going to buy this game, get the discounted PC version off of steam. Otherwise you'd be better off getting Armored Core for the Xbox. But honestly, for the discounted price this game is pretty decent. 7.5/10 :P

Wow, this game doesn't look very good compared to Armored Core or Phantom Crash. And Phantom Crash is an original xbox game!
plus, I thought your review was pretty fair, and I definitely see where your complaint comes from with the bad damage indicator thing. Like in Mass Effect 2 for instance, at least you can tell that your character feels the impact of every hit, and the screen has a good destress signal if you take severe damage. The nit-picky complaints from these people are retarded.

I don't see how the controller not vibrating when you get shot would be a problem. I turn off vibration on my controller. It's nothing but annoying. And if you're actually stupid enough to not notice your health bar going down. that's your problem, not the games

@Grecian92 You are taking what I said too literally... The problem was that there wasn't a good notification that you were taking damage. They could add better controller vibration, better screen effects or sound effects... The controller vibration was a suggestion, not a complaint for the lack of it.

I think you are very wrong. The game looks good on my T.V It plays great too. I had halo and played black. Halo was good I played the hell out of it. This game is ok for a mech game. Have you ever played the others like front mission 3 or 4? I think the problem is people don't think, you are in a big ass mech. They don't move like us they are not Gundam. I have had NO prob with the boss fight. Anyways keep doing what you do. LOL maybe you should get a new TV.

I don't think the review had any truth to it. Front Mission has ALWAYS been this way. If you play the former titles, you will quickly catch that Japanese cheese story, it's silly fun, it doesn't need to be that serious. The mechs looks awesome, they looked retarded in the ps2, and like drawings in the ps1, so I totally love how they renewed it. I do miss the battle system, it was turn based, oh well, they wanted something new, I can dig that. Besides, this game is more like a cult title. Cheers!

I thought it was spelt Wanzers, but pronounced Vanzers? Atleast I think that's how they did pronounce it in previous Front Mission games. I'm curious to try this out but severely disappointed that they felt they had to cater to the western market and make it more action oriented. I prefer my Turn Based Strategy Front Mission. :( For shame Squenix, for shame.

@ZeitgeistReview in the many previous front mission games, it was spelled Wanzer but pronounced Vanser. wanzer is a term that is derived from the German word "Wanderpanzer", or "walking tank". according to wiki. i figure the the reason they said "wanser" in the game is due to a lack of knowledge that double helix was given by square-enix.

I finished the game yesterday and my total time was 5.1 hours. I was very disappointed with the story as how Zeitgeist pointed out. Due to limited hours, the story had to be rushed. Ergo, the awkward speed love story. Although I know this is a spin off to a great series, this is not worth the $60 they have originally priced. I am still kind of debating to myself if it was even worth the $12.50 on Steam. Nevertheless, the game reminded me why I liked RPG over action game; the length play time.

I loved those games, but i only played them for the the multiplayer and the only reason i would play the single player is to unlock more weapons and armor for my mechs. since it doesnt seem like you have to play single player at all in order to unlock stuff for multiplayer, im very excited for this game

Hey Zeitgeis, I appreciate your review. I found your opinion very convincing to buy this on my PC since it's cheat now. I just want to remind everyone else in here that when buying games from oversees do remember that us Japanese likes repetitive things like grinding and re-do of boss fights, unlike in the states where fluid progression in the story and lots of reward feel.

Although the game is outdated in post rendered graphics, the game does have a sufficient ways to express their emotions using their semi-detailed facial expressions. The bosses are hard but it includes checks points and also the option to rebuild your Wanzers. So devs wanted us to die until we get the right type of strategy against them. This is very common in Japanese RPG/Strategy games. I would strongly recommend using keyboard and mouse for this.

isn't a triple aaa title a game of high production values and of great quality an sells well? black ops only sold well. the quality of that game is stupidly poor especially on the ps3 and the game is massivly over rated because it sold a tonne... compare it to quality real aa titles such as mgs 4, mass effect 2 even borderlands is a better game and you see my point in why you can't call it a triple aaa title because it sold alot.. thats my point.

Well ive played this game and it reminded me of AC4 but i still think this game was pretty awsome. The bosses do get REALLY reapetative and some of the cut scenes lack "momentom" like when dylans dad died he just said "no" a few times with no change of tone in his voice.... But i do really enjou the game but its a little bit tooooo limited. I mean when u beat the game u want to go back and play the first few levels with all armour and weapons but u cant..? Oh well. 8/10 for the game tho. .0

I agree with most of the points made in the video, but... I'm not complaining about the graphics. It has good anti-aliasing. The only thing I would ask for is taking the shine out of the weapons so they don't look cartoony. Otherwise... Who needs all the overly used bloom and sepia tones anyway?
One thing that the (almost dead now) multiplayer REALLY has going for it, is amazing sync! It might be the only game where you can get 10 players with 1 bar and see no stuttering.

@FDJustin ... However, the mech balance is really weird. Light mechs can equip heavier weapons and move faster, making most people think that using a heavy torso (defines your speed) is gimped.
And when you consider that most players use two homing missile packs, and usually two more weapons, while retaining the ability to dodge you, it really is.
Speaking of missiles, expect to see them constantly. They're just too good, and too easy to equip on the ubiquitous lighter frames.

From what I have played of this game it is a very fun experience. the graphics are one of the best for a mech game and it has a great variaty being able to get out of mech and battle on foot. I would give it 9 out of 10!

this doesn't look bad to me, in fact it looks pretty cool. I'm actually more of a mech fan, so I got drawn to this pretty fast. Also, it takes me back to the old days of SNES strategy games (Mostly imports from Japan). I think it's cool, I'll check it out soon enough.Not many games of this sort get treated well either. (Still dreaming of MW5). The stories in these games usually suck too, so I'd suggest playing it for what it does well.Don't rant about the game in your reviews, it looks bad.

This game really fail for me, had too much hope for it but i was really disappointed when they changed the game play style. I prefer the turn base strategy like FM4, that was and still is the best game for me. Too bad they don't make FM5 for the PS3 but only for the XBOX.
