Reducing population growth is a tough topic of discussion because we're very touchy about thinking of ourselves as a negative force in the world. But it's not really so bad, the biggest thing we can do to reduce population growth is educate women... Edumacated women = Less babies.
This is an analogy David Suzuki provides to what human beings do to their environments. All humans immediately start consuming, even before we are conceived. I am a consumer simply by writing this post with my laptop. We all share a cost in draining our environment of resources to survive whether domestically or globally. There is a limited amount of resources on this earth and the majority of the people who have the access to them is me and everyone else who reads this post.
The water we consume has passed through the bodies of innumerable other creatures. The carbon in the food you eat was exhaled by animals not too long ago. Resources are not unlimited, but they are also not being "consumed" in the way you think. Only energy and space are truly limiting factors on Earth. As we become more efficient at using both, we expand the carrying capacity of the land. Human mental capital is all that is necessary.

Unless they can lower their population (and we can lower our's), things will just get worse. And they'll likely eat even endangered animals too when things go critical. This video was posted because the poster thinks it is a negative?! Suzuki was young then and we're all a little rash when we start out. So his analogy might have been a little off-the-cuff, but nevertheless it's certainly a valid one. He was simply saying that humans have overall, contributed negatively to our environment - that which sustains us and allows us to exist. I don't think anyone could disagree with that. All you have to do is look around and use a little reason.

Nature above all else, including human life? The things that make us human are not human at all but living organisms... the same thing found in nature. We can't live with it, but yet we can't live without it. it is not anti-human it is called being one with nature. He is not demeaning anyone, if you try to listen to what he says, and not make up your own opinion and shoving it in his mouth, maybe you will get the right idea.
Also try to educate yourself with more than just one side of a story (your side). Get your head out of the bible, or whatever religious book you are fixated on. You sound a tad naive/ignorant...

Interesting little story about Dr. David Suzuki.
through the 90's, he lived 5 blocks from me in South Vancouver. Here's the thing. He has been going on for decades about how there's too much pollution, we should not drive, etc. Well, he and I used to arrive home at the end of the work day around the same time, and several days a week he'd pass by me driving an old gold color diesel Mercedes sedan which belched out a trail of grey-ish blue smoke behind it every time

I once saw a satellite photo of Detroit; it looked like an environment changed by the organism (humans) that thrived by the river. Like symbiotic bacteria living in or on the human body; in proper numbers they're beneficial but too many can make us ill. Our planet is ill, the proper balance of the varying organisms living here has been changed in our favour but at what cost... This planet cannot sustain this many careless, consuming organisms such as us.

@dickretro It sickens me to listen to people discuss the better tasting waters from various bottlers. As an organism, we need water but we got along fine without it being packaged in "convenient" plastic products before. A convenience that comes at the cost of our environment - sea birds are dying of starvation because their gullets are full of platic bottle caps. People should be more aware of what they consume.

Reducing population growth is a tough topic of discussion because we're very touchy about thinking of ourselves as a negative force in the world. But it's not really so bad, the biggest thing we can do to reduce population growth is educate women... Edumacated women = Less babies.
And it's pretty simple, no environment = no us.

This is an analogy David Suzuki provides to what human beings do to their environments. All humans immediately start consuming, even before we are conceived. I am a consumer simply by writing this post with my laptop. We all share a cost in draining our environment of resources to survive whether domestically or globally. There is a limited amount of resources on this earth and the majority of the people who have the access to them is me and everyone else who reads this post.

The water we consume has passed through the bodies of innumerable other creatures. The carbon in the food you eat was exhaled by animals not too long ago. Resources are not unlimited, but they are also not being "consumed" in the way you think. Only energy and space are truly limiting factors on Earth. As we become more efficient at using both, we expand the carrying capacity of the land. Human mental capital is all that is necessary.

@Skurataw I know you were being sarcastic, but seriously, feeding tens of millions of kids won't do ANYTHING. Unless they can lower their population (and we can lower our's), things will just get worse. And they'll likely eat even endangered animals too when things go critical. Think about a long term solution, not a short one. Those 10 million starving children will only get hungry later. And then have 7 kids (the average in Africa) who'll repeat the process. It's an unending cycle.

@thepurplemann That's another reason not to have kids. Children are starving and we keep feeding them but they grow up and fuck and make 10 more. It doesn't end. They should tell the kids who are old enough (12-13) that they can get food if they promise not to have kids. That way it won't be an endless cycle. And the African Government should stop letting itself being corrupted by 1st world countries. Less kids = Less starvation. Should be easy to understand.
