OK think of it this way catch 22 is basicly streetlight manafesto but catch 22 souds worse so streetlight is like a level x10 since the songs are all the same and writen by the same guy

Streetlight is a goddamn amazing band, but seriously, this song is by Catch 22. I know they did a cover album , it sounds exactly the goddamn same and was basically just a big middle finger to Catch from Streetlight. Catch performed it first, Keasbey Knights is one of the greatest albums ever made, and I hate it when people credit their songs to Streetlight.
@coooliox27 um, actually it was written by Tomas Kalnoky and Tomas had complete ownership of the song...so If you want to get technical, it's Tomas' song, not Catch or Streetlight's
@Bobalukey Like, dude, I know. I have Keasbey Knights by Catch 22 and both of Streetlight's albums. Tom Kalnoky is, like, my idol.
But it just annoys me that people credit Streetlight for Keasbey Knights. Like I said, Kalnoky just made it as a big "fuck you" to Catch 22. Even if Kalnoky wrote it, the members of Catch performed it first and they should get credit where credit is due.
@coooliox27 Part of the reason why Streetlight re-recorded the songs is because the quality of Catch 22's album was crap, though. And let's face it - it was. Ocassionaly I like that 'old crackly sound', but when it comes down to it, it's simply a lower quality than Streetlight's recordings.
@coooliox27 yea thomas was in Catch 22 when Keasby Nights was first released. so he owns the songs. Then things happen and the band split and streetlight was formed and Catch 22 got new members and started playing the songs from keasby nights that thomas wrote. The new Cath 22 was gonna re-release keasby night with just a new cover and such. and not actually re record it. so streetlight beat them to it and actually re recorded it. streetlight is awesome
@coooliox27 isnt both bands the same lead singer.. catch 22 just broke up after the release of the first keasbey nights than he redid the album with his new band streetlight
@amer1canj3sus well its actually punk with jazz/ska/classical/folk /acoustic/rock/reggae influences. And i think jazzcore fits better since most of the members are in fact jazz musicians.
pachabels canon is everywhere! xD now i kno what the dude who made the rant feels. that video is hilarious. anyway, Streetlight is raw! i havent stopped listening to them since i started listening lol
partially because it's just a popular chord progression, but more particularly because this song is about a wedding. But since the lyrics arent very clear on that using Pachelbel's Canon was an indication of that
How is it about a wedding? The lyrics make it look more like (the aftermath of) a funeral to me. "Won't somebody tap her on the shoulder 'tell her life goes on?".
the pachelbels cannon thing always made me think of a wedding situation where they still love eachother but she's marrying somebody else. thats how i've always understood it
I think they based the song on Pachelbel's Canon in D for the same reason it's generally used in graduations: the sequence sounds wistful, peaceful, and a bit introspective, which fits with the lyrics of the song.
@ghostofonyx51 same song writer, vocalist, and extremely similar instrumentals saying one is better then the other is like complaining that 2/3 is better then .6 repeating
Less obnoxious and much more energy, also do I even have to say how much better Chris Greer is at drumming than Chris Thatcher was...I can actually hear the C22 Keasbey drums...I can't tell if that's due to the extra obnoxious trumpets or him just plain sucking.
The above pretty much applies to the rest of this re-release album, ESPECIALLY RtFW...Why do you try to fix what wasn't broken Tommy K.?
completely disagree - but I do like C22 version of day in day out better. The vocals are a lot more spirited. however, the SM version of day in day out added different lyrics to the second verse which rhymed in the same way instead of repeating the same thing - which actually sounds really good.
@Clickthisprofile WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU SMOKING?! catch 22 was unorganized, terrible recording quality, and shitty players. just listening to the catch 22 version of walking away, the beginning bass makes me want to throw up. Streetlight manifesto is totally cleaned up and amazing players. i should know, im taking sax lessons with jim conti from streetlight. and to say that chris greer is better than chris thatcher! have you heard heres to life? of streetlight version of riding the 4th wave?
Then you are not listening if you can't hear the drums. I like Catch22's Keasbey Nights better, that is my opinion and not every shares it. I grew up listening to Catch 22's version and not Streetlights, they are both great it really just depends on which you heard first.
Yeah if "fuckhead" means people who offer sensible ad hominem free opinions then yes I guess I am this dying breed you refer to as "fuckhead". Let's stay on topic like the rest of the people here, what part of my comment did you see as distasteful?
Hm -- the part about not hearing the drums, and the presupposition that if you heard catch first youll like that. Been listenin to Catch/SM a looooooong time and i definitely disagree. But All of this is besides my "point" (if you can call it that), SM > Catch in every way, especially from a technical standpoint. Catch is bland in comparison, both bands are good but SM is WAY better.
SM is more technical without a doubt, but Catch has much more energy, calling them "bland" wouldn't be correct at all. This album always struck me as power over finesse and SM's other albums makes it clear that they are definitely a finesse band, Catch back then was a bunch of high-spirited teenages all they had to their name was power and energy. This album just suits a youthful band better to me, SM are more professional.
Eh I agree with the youthful sound but as a musician chances are that I'll always be on the side of technicality. That and I think SM's originals blow Catch's out of the water. Haha speaking of Punk in relation to pachelbel's chord progression, if you listen to Greenday's Basket Case it sounds similar to this progression, but slightly varied or not exactly the same.
the key change and melody at 1:19 and on is such a rip off of pachelbel's canon in D-Major. It's the exact same thing actually, then it ends at 2:06 rather abruptly.
What reason would Tomas Kalnoky have for "ripping off" a famous classical piece? None, he didn't rip it off, it's an allusion to Pachelbel's canon, I love Canon, and that's why this is one of my favorite streetlight manifesto songs. I'm sorry for calling you a dumbass, I get a bit defensive when people talk smack about a great band. . .

1. This
2. We Are The Few
3. One Tin Soldier (which Kalnoky didn't technically write).

u are right. the pachebel chord progression is a popular progression in many punk songs.
Liebjuice 2 years ago
Haha speaking of Punk in relation to pachelbel's chord progression, if you listen to Greenday's Basket Case it sounds similar to this progression, but slightly varied or not exactly the same.

wow a ska band that has some classical music in there music XD awesome^_^

the key change and melody at 1:19 and on is such a rip off of pachelbel's canon in D-Major. It's the exact same thing actually, then it ends at 2:06 rather abruptly.

that was on purpose

iloveSMandGD 2 years ago

DiVeronica 2 years ago
Not the same, but from what I hear there is an allusion to a different classical piece in If and When We Rise Again.

It's not even a reference, it's essentially a ska-tized version of Hungarian Dance No5. And it's AWESOME

It's not a rip-off dumbass, it's a tribute.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
don't call me a dumbass you little punk. and no,it's not a "tribute"
DiVeronica 2 years ago
Yeah, it pretty much is. ^___^
What reason would Tomas Kalnoky have for "ripping off" a famous classical piece? None, he didn't rip it off, it's an allusion to Pachelbel's canon, I love Canon, and that's why this is one of my favorite streetlight manifesto songs. I'm sorry for calling you a dumbass, I get a bit defensive when people talk smack about a great band. . .

i like streetlight, and i like catch 22, but in my opinion keasbey nights era catch 22 was better than both of em. they were better united.

New Catch bites.

What does it matter which band is better, they're both awesome. Enjoy the music.

Streetlight is better than catch.
And this is a better recording of on and on and on,
much clearer. Thanks Thomas.
