As a child I heard this song half a century ago on a Canadian Country-themed TV program called "The Tommy Hunter Show." I had never forgotten it and it pleases me to hear it again. Tommy recited it on his program, but this is the first time I learned that Tex Ritter actually composed it. Thanks for the memories.
@MattDazeTv In 80 years, I met him on a couple of occasions, I have never heard an unkindly word against him. I believe he was indeed a kind and honorable man.
@MartianSanta perhaps the Jack is looked as a prince, you have a handsome prince, who is spoiled and gets what he want's and thus betrays the king like Satan had done to God, but or it could be just that's how he remembers it, idk just my theory
@Obamaluke I went to high school with John. He always said, hi with a smile to everyone, he saw walking down the hall. He was also student body president in the 12th grade. I was in the 10th grade.
Oh My I have heard this song many times as a young teenager. B ut never had a deck of cards laid out with the song this is great . Wish i knew how to put it on face book .Thank you so much
@TheTanker03 right click ur mouse, on the link not the actual song, select copy shortcut and click, go to fb and ur profile and in ur status click paste, hope it works for u xx(posted loads of songs this way)
Thank you very much for posting this! I grew up in a very small town and I listened up everytime the DJ would play this on Sunday. Brings back memories of being a child and pulling out a deck of cards to follow along.
I had no idea that when you added all the dots..... that was really cool! I am really impressed by this song. Love the religious references, but also the calendar.
I am listening to this and reading the WikiLeaks expose of the actions of the US Military in Iraq. There is the hope and the delusion. Then one day we must face our reality.
A nice recording if you take into account that playing cards in church is not an offence of the articles of war. The sargent would probably be tossed in the stockade for being so stupid.
i never thought about cards in this way. there is a reason for everything according to God, there are no mistakes. may all our servicemen and women be blessed by this video. people should look for the good in everything, even those we do not understand. who would have thought about a simple deck of cards having such a meaning, God bless you all.
Just wanna thank the boys across the pond, You are a rod of steel.

They even let the soldier keep his deck on him when he was shot the next morning.

It's not so much a song. It's more of a prayer. Simply beautiful. If you're not religious, that fine. But it's still a brilliant and beautiful piece.

i didn't understand why the Jack is the devil
and why the devil has his place among all the other good things he mentioned before
the Jack or Knave describe either a common man a noble or a knight
none of them reminds me of the devil

Great rendition, but it seems that the originator of this song, T. Texas Tyler, doesn't seem to get the recognition that I believe belongs to him!
