Removing the tail is like de-barking an animal -- you are amputating a part of the dog he uses to communicate. It's totally unnecessary. How can a cow step on a tail unless the dog's tail drags on the ground?
I grew up with Hewlett all my life. And it is odd for me to see them with a tail. We docked ours to keep them from getting stepped on by our roping steers. That's why most people dock them
I'm sick of seeing people dock their tails, its important for the dogs speed and coordination, a dog with a good long tail can work livestock with perfection
ya i can't imagine docking my ACD's tail i had heard of people doing it for ones that worked with pigs so the pigs don't have a tail to bite etc. but why not get the right dog for the right job ?
You know its a true working dog, its probably moving odd from being kicked a good many times. A good cattle dog is tough and relentless. Our cattle dogs always moved a bit gimpy after a good few years because they do actually do there real intended jobs, and sometimes yea that catch a pissed off cow or horse from time to time kind of inevitable.
@abraham0355 hey mate they don't dock the tails on ACD'S there is a few breed's of Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog's 1 of my friends has had 1 & I have seen plenty over the year's & this would be another 1 of them they do look a bit funny with the stumpy tail though & people get confused & think that they have been docked but I can assure You that's not the case do some research on them I cant remember why they started breeding the Stumpy Tail, Cheers.
Well it is actually very common in the states for "breeders" of so called "working dogs", ACD blood line to dock their tails. They do this out of ignorance. They claim that the tail is a hindrance or liability to a "working dog". Also they are are breeding outside of a AKC system etc. Which I feel is a bunch of BS anyway because it promotes inbreeding that results in genetic defects and health problems.
@greenkarma I have a pure blue heeler and this dog moves awkwardly in comparison to other heelers I have seen. I have also heard that docking the tail effects the agility of a heeler. On the other hand, several of the heelers I have seen on youtube from the states and other countries do not look very pure or true to the original examples here in Australia. So this may also hinder the the dogs performance as a worker.

We docked ours to keep steers from stepping on them. In the roping arenas and alleys they get stepped on all the time due to close quarters.

Very stupid to cut the tail of a ACD, they need it for balance while running
