I was like Jack, glad i was too.. if i had been aware of what was going on around me(thanks dad- who ever you are- and mom we wont go there) and all the awfulness that surrounded me growing up. Once i figured out that i could make it all go away i would have, but never did..
@Bernard5323 There are parts in this song where Moon actually follows the melody of the song. The best example of this are the last few seconds. My favorite part of the drums on this over all is the section that starts at about 1:18. Especially live versions of it. Listen to Live at Leeds and you'll know what I mean.
Its my guess that they are lip syncing in this filmed performance. Anyone else agree? They don't show Keith crashing the symbols. He holds the sticks funny, and that's the album track version. Some of the back up vocals they aren't singing. And they cut the song abruptly at the end right before the "I saw ya."
@dieselcalhoun yeah i totally agree dude. if you watch the kids are alright movie they juxtapose a lot of actual performances with lipsynched ones, and when its lipsynched its always the same deal, john looking even more disinterested than usual and holding the bass awkwardly, keith "playing" like he's afraid of breaking a stick, and roger just kinda sulking there looking around. they're way less into it when they're lipsynching, and relaly who could blame them
Basically a song about making fun and being cruel to a slow kid, but it never gets to him because he`s slow and is just plain ignorant. Why aren`t pop songs more like this now?
Dude, you're taking it the wrong way, each one of us should be like Jack, everything and everyone is against him, but no one can't prevent him from being happy.
Doesn't get a whole lot better than this. Too bad the camera does not always focus on the right musician. At least, Entwistle is part of the picture, as ooposed to being out-of-frame as in some later films.
He was miming here, I don't think he'd bother putting any actual effort into his drumming. Besides, he's having too much fun obviously NOT drumming, check the "I'm a Boy" vid on the sidebar here, you get a few more shots of Moonie playing the crowd there.
It can be a little hard to tell. I'm an aspiring musician so I pay more attention to the technical aspects of things than the layman might. You can pick up on how the vocals are double-tracked here, more than one take layered on top of each other to thicken things...harmonies are a bit too perfect, if the Live at Leeds version is any indication....and of course the guitars aren't plugged in. ;-)
what a group! my very first concert at the little theatre in downtown kansas city, missouri. they never needed the gimmick of destroying their instruments. someone's bad idea.
The Live at Leeds version of Happy Jack is definitely the best. Obviously there isn't any leeds video footage but the 3 hit singles medley on disk 1 is awesome, Substitute into Happy Jack into I'm a Boy. They play all 3 songs flawlessly.
bonzo wuz here rockon!!!!!!!!!!!! and all that early tube amp blow out anolog circuitrry an all that ,like it was broken ear drum eaven it was ...ha ha ha
There is a guy named Jack and he is a friend of The Who. His nick name was Happy Jack. Pete wrote this for "Happy Jack". I think Jack wrote a book or two about his friendship with band of 50 yrs. I think he has a website and has thousands of photos.
this is not a live performance. Anyway, Keith did such things live very often, he plays the base drum and does something totally different with his sticks. He is the best drummer, and the best clown
AW.....memories of childhood. My older brother was playing this 45 when my mother asked, "Who's that?" My brother said, "The Who". Mom replied, "No, who is that?" We laughed about it for years.

Why am I thinking the lyrics go "so they rode on his head in their blurry on key"?Not "furry donkey".I guess I could be wrong.

Yeah, the Who are a mixture of out of frame and in frame-ness. Enthwhistle included.
The modern Who are great, and I'm glad that they still kick it.
Ain't the same without Entwhistle's high harmonies, thrubbing bass. And the Moon's chaotic and yet sympathetic personality.
They were some band, when they were together.
