It really saddens me that so many people either have no idea how much natural beauty has been stolen from them by bad exterior lighting, or they know but they just don't seem to care. As far as I know, I'm the only person in my neighborhood that steps out at night to look up at the night sky and enjoy what little it has to offer in this damn red zone. The Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, the Orion nebula, and the Pleiades star cluster are all nice to look at through my telescope, but I want more.
Again awesome rant! But, are you kidding me about people thinking that the Milkey-Way was what caused the earthquake? I love stars too and you're right stop having 50 spotlights for one building!
I live in Iowa and it's light polluted as hell, I can only see like 20 stars MAX out my window (I live on the third floor) and that's lucky! I want to go out to this observatory out in the middle of nowhere, but even then, I doubt it will be that good... I want to stop light pollution but seriously, our brain dead fucking government wont do anything about it, well, unless it benefits them...
I don't think people would care enough to pay enough attention to this issue. Most people don't care much about astrology, unless it's "Star Wars" related :). Therefore they won't see your problem as their problem anytime soon, certainly not in our lifetime. Till then I think you have to keep driving out of town, while there is still less light polution, for now. We live in a society that is active 24/7 to some degree and therefore we need night lights! THE END!!!
I know that not a lot of people look at stars for a hobby. To most people they're just points of light in the sky. We're in a society need lighting at night, no question about it. But as people need to be able to see where they're going at night, we need light pointed down where it's needed and not wasted, not up where only astronauts can see it.
@etraderx11 I agree we need night lights but why not just get rid of the globe lights and replace them with full cut of lights that shine ALL the light downwards and none of it up in the sky? it is more efficient and everyone is happy. Just check out the diffrence it can make in needless's light pollution simulator.
Light pollution is annoying, but there's more important things to worry about. Like the fact we are on course to destroy our planet in short order. Campaign against global warming before we're all dead, maybe the reduced energy usage will also reduce your light pollution...
