The pilot was most certainly Janusz Zurakowski, probably one of the greatset pilots ever. He fought in Poland and later in RAF during ww2. Sfter the war he became test pilot first for Gloster and later for Canadian Avro. He invented the "Zurabatic Cartwheel" while flying Gloster Meteors, a maneuvre that has to be seen to be believed. :) (basically a double hammerhead stall, -vertical)
