I dunno about his de-facto communism, I believe he's an anarcho-* though. I'm all for communism, as long as it's VOLUNTARY amongst the participants. I would personally prefer an Anarcho-Capitalism for instance, but a polity in the next asteroid or town or whatever would be just shits and giggles fine if it were voluntarily communistic and a peaceful neighbor. I enjoy Jaz because he's a great lyricist and human being who calls it like he sees it and is very talented. I need no other reason.
I say let Jaz say what he wants. You're not defined as a human being by your career and just because you're a musician doesn't mean you can't talk about the world. Put it this way. Everyone complains about how a lot of music today doesn't have meaning, for the reasons previously expressed, people can't say that about Killing Joke.
keeroy - Loved your description. I too get sick of Jaz's rants. Also, very nicely done video. I've always loved this song but never compared a termite mound to out skyscrapers. (I'm alsos an architecture nut.)
@ Keeroy ---> I know what you mean; he hates capitalism yet that is the vehicle of his success.... this is, uhhh, hypocritical on his behalf...... ultimately I turn a blind eye to his politics and just enjoy the songs and music. They are probably my favorite band these days. I had the privlige of opening up for them with my band about 20 years ago..... don't even remember it.... (drunk at the time).......
- Jaz Coleman is hardly a radical. He sings about what he observes. In any of his songs does he say, Democracy is bad, Money is bad, etc. Nope, he spits it out like the way it is...furthermore, he is not by any means and atypical musical artist. He has written and conducted symphonies. Saying Jaz Coleman is a political radical is moronic. That's like saying Barack Obama is an incredible musician.

This is one the most brilliant works I have ever heard.
He switches the place of the humble termite with that of the modern human - as in the phrase "live to consume, live for momentary pleasure", and the earlier "it's their purpose to serve" (*the modern worker).
He reminds us that despite technology we are all just "higher level" animals. We are not that different from the termite.

Being in a band myself, age has a way of making you hurry things up. This album with Martin Atkins stands out as one their best!

Weither you consider Jaz Coleman's views radical or no. He still has a point and isn't too far off from the way the world is being run now. You call it "radical".. I'll call it "ahead of the curve".
The song is very true to how the world is been run now,the termites are the greedy global companys who actually run the world and tell the govenments what to say and do,the lyrics are great "move faster people" "serving their purpose, its their purpose to serve" Jaz is a genius, one of my favorite songs of all time!!
What makes KJ a great band is that they are different things to different people (who get it). One person will listen and say "POLITICAL" and another will listen and say "MYSTICAL"; yet another "INDUSTRIAL". This and always the anticipation of another album, which is always sure to...
I don't think Jaz is radical. So his words are sometimes political, sometimes spiritual. I agree with his railing against western civilization as you call it. The "west" is destroying the earth and our very humanity. And Killing Joke was awesome on saturday sunday last in NYC. Since the last two new albums I am listening and relistening to all their music.
well, in my opinion is jaz mad and genial at the same time. he´ll never be a commom musician. and that makes him irredeemable in one or another way. but personally i hate when musicians try to be politicians (and vice versa...) and misuse their concerts for agitations (like bono vox or massive attack i experienced). coleman´s view of the society like in this song may be very intriguing and welcome, but his communistic ideas of private property refusal quite extreme ("money is not our god").

First, kudos to you for asserting your opinion re: Coleman. I guess I would ask you, as I have asked other critics, don't you think ol' Jaz is just attempting to retain attention? He doesn't live in the East, he acts in films fairly convincingly and he certainly doesn't have any issues taking Western money. He's playing a part, and he is VERY entertaining. This is the last card the Jester has to play; he's gotta pay the alimony ;0
Yeah I do think he's attempting to retain attention. I just think there were "bigger" people like him acting ways more decent, not making gods out of themselves. Big psychologists, composers, politicians who accomplished more important stuff than Jaz. Watch Groehls eyes go berserk in the interview where Jaz answers the questions they ask Groehl. He's over the top. But hey. I liked THRILLER but wouldn't wanna sleep with Michael neither.
They were also filming for Jaz's documentary. I am sure that will be entertaining (if ever done)! The bottom line is that it sounds like you felt like you "knew" Jaz Coleman through his music. But really, near 50 years of age, I doubt anyone knows him, just his "act". Grohl acted that way because Jaz had it all planned. Seriously, Grohl is no stranger to narcissists. Smells like a killing joke.
He he he... I agree with you. Though I'm just learning about his act, I confess. Outside the Gate I listen rarely to. Don't really like it that much. A doc about Jaz would be great!
But HE, Mr Jaz (what does he do when one call him Jeremy?) Coleman is doing it about himself. That's the amusing thing. Is it two hours of visual "Courtland Talk" rants? Straight to video. But I would be the first to watch it. Thin line between love and hate, and that guy certainly knows it!!!!!! HAAA!!!
Ah man, why doesn't that surprise me?`He himSELF does it? That's... wow! NOW I'm really starting to appreciate his attitude. That's really cool. I should feel different, probably. But no, this way I guess I understand the whole thing better now. Hope he's gonna rant "I'm AWESOME beyond belief!" throughtout the movie.
Great album, and yeah, I would say that it was the last seriously great album. "Pandemonium" had some good features, but well, ahem, not that many....
Haha,I do know shit,i'm no fanatic and i'm not your friend. Try a stadium full of losers worshipping fake musicians like U2, Aerosmith, Kiss or similar pathetic uninspired trash like that. Jaz may talk shit sometimes, he's not modest either, but he has accomplished a lot more then contemporary "musicians"! Not only with KJ but also in the classic music scene. Some of his KJ lyrics are strikingly true and appliccable to the present world like "money's...", "goodbye to the village" and so on.
You don't know shit in regards of my music taste. I hate the bands you named. I don't think there's only KJ and next to that U2. Cheap one. Ok, I was expecting to much modesty from the guy I guess. Still, it's not funny anymore, it's ridiculous. Their performance on stage leaves a lot to desire, downright awful at times. Saw them 3 times over here and it WAS like a ceremony yaaawn like I hated them as a teenager.
Ok. It was bad over here, everyone felt so. Watching the live videos here convinces me otherwise though. I love them, did bass rehearsal with Night Time and Pandemonium over and over again. One aspect was naiv, I confess: their secrecy, no internet, no infos, just that mysterious UK band nobody but me cared about. BOOM there comes YOUTUBE. THAT's JAZ? My Jaz :-( ? End of story. I'm slowly getting used to him though :-)
What did you think of "Outside the Gate"? Your view of him must have changed then. Seriously, I couldn't believe it. And the cover art, damn, don't get me going compared to the other albums...It's your opinion, Bam, don't change it for anyone...now that IS what I think Jaz would say.
What exactly is it you couldn't believe about "Outside the gate"? Was it so breathtaking? Incl. cover art that is the best? Well, I like it, I like all of their artwork, the one with the pope is great. PANDEMONIUM!
HAAA!!! Nah, man, I mean the first KJ album I bought was the first KJ album ("Requiem", etc)...then I HAD to have more..so this small little independent store run by this guy who never heard of KJ orders "Outside the Gate" for me. When I first played it I thought the cheesy synths and vocalizers were a joke. I thought there was another band called KJ. Regarding artwork: The Pope/Nazi thing will be their iconic image, or that first cover. Hard call.
Compare that to "love in an elevator"!! Killing Joke are unique in their quality and creativity although they are not everybody's taste. Neither is top Bordeaux wine or similar but that does not say anything about it's quality, just about the masses who lack quality to be able to appreciate that. Jaz is a genius, living in his own world, excentric, sure, but not an idiot. I resent that.
ha ha. You don't know shit, my friend. Seeing fanatics reaction is always entertaining. Are we talking a band here or a damn church? I wasn't referring to Geordie neither. Just Jaz. Big idiot Mr. Coleman. My opinion.
UNMATCHED guitar playing of Geordie. Clapton, Beck, Hendrix and whoever more could only dream of coming up with the stuff that Geordie has come up with since 1979. Only, to recognize this, you would have to know the Killing Joke work and know the first thing about music, neither which you guys do!!
What a load of arrogant wise ass crap here, omg !!! I bet that most of you weren't even born in 1979 when Killing Joke was already making very strong, original and unique musique. Their albums since then have been extremely strong (except maybe outside the gate) and display strong lyrics from Jaz and in the entire world UNMATCHED
well dude, i was born 1973, if this makes you happy and don't accuse me of listening U2 and similar, first browse my videos and my favourites and you'll get a picture what i'm listening. i've written, that killing joke had a great beginning. but repeating the joke makes it not funny anymore. that's jaz coleman and his ultra leftist evangelism shit.
Yeah, You name it, Keeroy, I'm ambivalent about them as well. Jaz sometimes really sucks ass. Self-overestimation to the max. Also I think fame just didn't do him any good. Thinks he's the pope uf music and politics. He's neither of both. When asked what records he has, Jaz goes "None but mine." I believe him.
exactly, you've hit the point. i'm afraid that killing joke makes a good music indeed but not such a as good as jaz wish thinks of it. IMHO - the last albums are really crap...
Yeah, I sorta like their intensity, but they SO lack originality and good song-writing. When I came across KJ I was like the only one knowing them in my area (corner of Switzerland...) There was this kinda sympathy adding to the unusual music experience, and to support such a band. I never thought of KJ being the next Nr. 1 Beethoven Intellectuals though, but so does Jaz. He's rather ridiculous and childish than freaky and crazy if you ask me. Still love his voice.
as you say. well, killing joke has its rightful place in the music history. but not more. ... die welt braucht keine weiteren radikalen pseudoplitischen oder pseudophilosophischen barden mehr :).
Well, I think they were very original at the start. The words of "Requiem" are almost perfect, but if you hate it, we will agree to disagree. Really, it seems you take Jaz too seriously. He must somewhere in his brain know it is ridiculous for him to pay someone to assert he is the next Mahler. He just can't comprehend leaving the world unchanged. He makes me feel sad more than angry at this stage of his career. KJ will always be a gem to me.
I kind of agree with that. I like Pandemonium, but it took a very, very, very long time to grow on me. I thought Democracy was crap and still do, and the most recent one is also crap, but I love the 2003 self titled release. I think Dave Grohl did a phenomenal job on this record, and I think every song on the album is great. Its one of their better records in my opinion. The early stuff is still the best though.
well, born in a dictatorship, i'm very well aware of the advantages of the democracy. like churchill have said - "it has been told that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time".
Strange. I sort of don't like it. Still I keep listening it over and over again. Are there some kinda occultistic backward messages only the hidden parts of my brain can receive *shuddering* ?? Nah more the atmosphere that I love, I guess. Like with Fields of Nephilim. Dry, wastelandish, wide...
My favorites are Night Time and Pandemonium. The self titled grew on me over time though. Overkill-style again... A lot of the other stuff I don't like at all. Guess I own all of'em nonetheless.
well, the album democracy is more about politics than about music... well, fields of the nephilim is another remarkable group, for me especial with their tangible creepy atmosphere.
re - Hossanas - yes it has a strange compulsive quality - i have veered from loving to hating it and back to loving it again - it's definately unique - should be interesting to see what the new LP will be like.
Isn't the early stuff always the best? Seriously. If Jaz is doing orchestral versions of Pink Fraud tunes then times have changed, and Jaz doesn't like his money situation, I would wager. The thing I will defend about him is that he consistently writes well and on the same themes. However, he is accepted by the mainstream, just look at the logo on their videos. He is not the "outsider" he wants to declare himself.
jaz is just breakin down the barriers of tongue in cheek messianism , dont take people too seriously i think is the message

Radical ? Just a human reaction about all the shit we eat day after day.
A way to stay alive and kicking.
Not a dogma, only a path to reach wisdom and stay real.
With doubt, pain, conscience.
To keep our love of life real and make it better.
To bury this endless construction.
To reach something else :
"You are an inspiration to me
You are my inspiration of how not to be
You are my inspiration to achieve a better way of life"

Ah man, why doesn't that surprise me?`He himSELF does it? That's... wow! NOW I'm really starting to appreciate his attitude. That's really cool. I should feel different, probably. But no, this way I guess I understand the whole thing better now. Hope he's gonna rant "I'm AWESOME beyond belief!" throughtout the movie.

What album is this off of? I love this song.
gamage3 4 years ago 2
Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions...one of the best albums of history IMHO.
georgpetur 4 years ago
yeah, in my opinion the climax of killing joke too...
keeroy 4 years ago

Eric22 4 years ago
You don't know shit in regards of my music taste. I hate the bands you named. I don't think there's only KJ and next to that U2. Cheap one. Ok, I was expecting to much modesty from the guy I guess. Still, it's not funny anymore, it's ridiculous. Their performance on stage leaves a lot to desire, downright awful at times. Saw them 3 times over here and it WAS like a ceremony yaaawn like I hated them as a teenager.
Bambutschi 4 years ago
Bambutschi 4 years ago
What did you think of "Outside the Gate"? Your view of him must have changed then. Seriously, I couldn't believe it. And the cover art, damn, don't get me going compared to the other albums...It's your opinion, Bam, don't change it for anyone...now that IS what I think Jaz would say.
ButSheSaid 4 years ago
What exactly is it you couldn't believe about "Outside the gate"? Was it so breathtaking? Incl. cover art that is the best? Well, I like it, I like all of their artwork, the one with the pope is great. PANDEMONIUM!
Bambutschi 4 years ago
Hard call.
ButSheSaid 4 years ago
Compare that to "love in an elevator"!! Killing Joke are unique in their quality and creativity although they are not everybody's taste. Neither is top Bordeaux wine or similar but that does not say anything about it's quality, just about the masses who lack quality to be able to appreciate that. Jaz is a genius, living in his own world, excentric, sure, but not an idiot. I resent that.
Eric22 4 years ago
ha ha. You don't know shit, my friend. Seeing fanatics reaction is always entertaining. Are we talking a band here or a damn church? I wasn't referring to Geordie neither. Just Jaz. Big idiot Mr. Coleman. My opinion.
Bambutschi 4 years ago
UNMATCHED guitar playing of Geordie. Clapton, Beck, Hendrix and whoever more could only dream of coming up with the stuff that Geordie has come up with since 1979. Only, to recognize this, you would have to know the Killing Joke work and know the first thing about music, neither which you guys do!!
Eric22 4 years ago 2
What a load of arrogant wise ass crap here, omg !!! I bet that most of you weren't even born in 1979 when Killing Joke was already making very strong, original and unique musique. Their albums since then have been extremely strong (except maybe outside the gate) and display strong lyrics from Jaz and in the entire world UNMATCHED
Eric22 4 years ago
well dude, i was born 1973, if this makes you happy and don't accuse me of listening U2 and similar, first browse my videos and my favourites and you'll get a picture what i'm listening. i've written, that killing joke had a great beginning. but repeating the joke makes it not funny anymore. that's jaz coleman and his ultra leftist evangelism shit.
keeroy 4 years ago
Taking it that personal DOES make you seem like a fanatic. Sorry. The church of Jaz.
Bambutschi 4 years ago
Yeah, You name it, Keeroy, I'm ambivalent about them as well. Jaz sometimes really sucks ass. Self-overestimation to the max. Also I think fame just didn't do him any good. Thinks he's the pope uf music and politics. He's neither of both. When asked what records he has, Jaz goes "None but mine." I believe him.
Bambutschi 4 years ago
exactly, you've hit the point. i'm afraid that killing joke makes a good music indeed but not such a as good as jaz wish thinks of it. IMHO - the last albums are really crap...
keeroy 4 years ago
Yeah, I sorta like their intensity, but they SO lack originality and good song-writing. When I came across KJ I was like the only one knowing them in my area (corner of Switzerland...) There was this kinda sympathy adding to the unusual music experience, and to support such a band. I never thought of KJ being the next Nr. 1 Beethoven Intellectuals though, but so does Jaz. He's rather ridiculous and childish than freaky and crazy if you ask me. Still love his voice.
Bambutschi 4 years ago
as you say. well, killing joke has its rightful place in the music history. but not more. ... die welt braucht keine weiteren radikalen pseudoplitischen oder pseudophilosophischen barden mehr :).
keeroy 4 years ago
Well, I think they were very original at the start. The words of "Requiem" are almost perfect, but if you hate it, we will agree to disagree. Really, it seems you take Jaz too seriously. He must somewhere in his brain know it is ridiculous for him to pay someone to assert he is the next Mahler. He just can't comprehend leaving the world unchanged. He makes me feel sad more than angry at this stage of his career. KJ will always be a gem to me.
ButSheSaid 4 years ago
I kind of agree with that. I like Pandemonium, but it took a very, very, very long time to grow on me. I thought Democracy was crap and still do, and the most recent one is also crap, but I love the 2003 self titled release. I think Dave Grohl did a phenomenal job on this record, and I think every song on the album is great. Its one of their better records in my opinion. The early stuff is still the best though.
gamage3 4 years ago
well, born in a dictatorship, i'm very well aware of the advantages of the democracy. like churchill have said - "it has been told that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time".
keeroy 4 years ago
I think Hosanna is actually one of Killing Jokes best albums ever...raw, dark and powerful.
georgpetur 4 years ago
Bambutschi 4 years ago
well, can´t like them all I guess...the ones I hardly play are Fire Dances and Revelations.
georgpetur 4 years ago
well, the album democracy is more about politics than about music... well, fields of the nephilim is another remarkable group, for me especial with their tangible creepy atmosphere.
keeroy 4 years ago
re - Hossanas - yes it has a strange compulsive quality - i have veered from loving to hating it and back to loving it again - it's definately unique - should be interesting to see what the new LP will be like.
fogzax 3 years ago
Isn't the early stuff always the best? Seriously. If Jaz is doing orchestral versions of Pink Fraud tunes then times have changed, and Jaz doesn't like his money situation, I would wager. The thing I will defend about him is that he consistently writes well and on the same themes. However, he is accepted by the mainstream, just look at the logo on their videos. He is not the "outsider" he wants to declare himself.

yea your right...still pretty cool vid..\
some real termite mounds look like works of art..thanks for posting, never heard the band before
