  • I wonder if it was truly made in 1913? How would they have made the dolls move in that way? A series of stills? The dolls don't look that old. Though my Gramps born in Russia, who left around that SAME TIME, would of the Russian Father Christmas and my Mom said the Russian Santa is white, with a walking staff!I know violin was popular there though. My Grampa insisted my Mom take it as a child --and piano too.

  • To my knowledge that is the first time a CHRISTMAS CRACKER has been used in a film..

  • That movie is amazing! So bizaar and clever.

  • Simply lovely!

  • Are there currently any efforts to restore Wladyslaw Starevicz's films to their original quality? It seems that it would be easy to sharpen the images and remove the little grains that pop up. Not that the quality of this is bad, but the results of such an effort would be interesting.

  • Considering the year it was made, it's a wonderful film.

  • Amazing. Didn't know the art started so early. Was this before or after Melies' Shoot the Moon?

  • This is actually a German stop motion film. Weihnachten is Christmas in the German language.

  • :) wow!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this gem.

  • Evidently this was made before Russia's descent into Bolshevic madness.

  • The most enchanting 6 minutes and 31 seconds on the entire site. I was captivated from the very beginning and I just wanted to watch it again and again!

  • This is a beautiful film

  • Its; a beautifull piece of art work from 1913,thank you. Congradulations; to its creator, currant owner, and the Soviet Union for sharing this art work with us all..It shows a lot of heart.

  • Beautiful film..Thanks.

  • didu make dis or copy it?

  • I seriously doubt the the info about this movie - it looks fairly new and at 5:40 it says "Froehliche Weihnachten" (Happy Christmas) in German not Russian, nevertheless it's very charming and I enjoyed watching it. Thanks.

  • It looks fairly new? I hope you're joking. This film is nearly a century old. Although Starewicz was born in Poland (which at the time was part of the Russian empire), he would make films for whoever commissioned them (whoever would give him funds to do so). He made films in Poland, Russia, France, and yes, even Germany. All of the information given about the film is correct.

  • I can assure you, FreddyFrier, that this is in fact a film from 1913.

  • This is so lovely.

  • this is awesome!

  • Brilliant! Thanks for posting!

  • Most marvelous! Thanks so very much for posting this.

  • What a fantastic jewel. Thanks so much for uploading. Absolutely enchanting.

  • Wladyslaw Starewicz's animation, along with others, can be seen at an Animated shorts/Live music event at the San Francisco International Film Festival, Saturday May 5, at the Castro Theatre. Music artists perform original scores alongside these animations!

  • Very authentic. Very nice.

  • Whomever did the translations on this film -- those insects are 1. Dung Beetle (not a Ladybug) 2. Grasshopper (not Dragonfly) and although they are not called out, the other insects are Stag Beetles. That being said -- what a charming piece. I adored it. Thank you for posting it.

  • Yes, kornreich and Magician266, this is authentic. The English title pages were obviously added later. I first saw this film in a seminar about the history of cinema. Magician266 feels that the toys and the props do not look like they're from 1913... Actually they look exactly as if they came from that period, and in fact do.

  • It does not look like a film made in 1913... The tone, the film color, the toys & props... anyway... it's an awesome stop-motion.

  • I don't want to be a party pooper, but I wonder about the authenticity of this film . . . if it was made in Russia, why does it have English title pages?

  • wonderful.

  • Whoever posted this, if you have more, please please can you put them all up? What a treat these are.

  • Astounding and innovative for 1913! good lord!

  • How did he do the insect's legs moving!!! Amazing! Thank you.

  • This is Ladislaw Starewicz! Thanks SO much for sharing!

  • This is so great. Wow...just wow.

  • 1913, that's 93 years ago. Amazing, the same time as Windsor McKay and his dinosaur drawings!

  • Wonderful! Hard to believe that such good stuff was already being made that early!
