Billy The Dirtbag pulled that diving shit his entire career. Great goalie yes, but the fact remains he was one of the biggest cheapshot artists and dirtiest players of all time and a classless human being as well.
@lighthouse44 Fair to say that Smith was a cheapshot artist, but he used the rules to get penalties and won four Stnley cups... But don't judge his character based on his on ice performance...He was a great human being and did a lot of great stuff off the ice.
Smith was a cheap, hit you when your back is turned kind of a player. He blatantly fractured Curt Fraser's cheekbone into many different pieces in 1985. There is a You Tube video of Smith getting into an altercation with Blackhawks Grant Mulvey in 1979. Smith lost, though he did give Mulvey a shot, a dirty one, in the back when Mulvey was down. BTW, I was at that game and the Hawks won 8-0. Dec. 23rd 1979, I believe.
@55mrfuckhead The greatest what? He reminded me of Ed Van Impe's comment about the Rangers' Thomas Sandstrom; "He'd be even braver if that facemask was just a little bigger....". Smith was a world-class pussy.
@mistercreosote13 It was a dive, and Smith was a dirty player. But he was no pussy. You either know nothing about hockey, or are a pussy yourself - pick one.
Thats crazy. I watched every Islander game back then and Smiity, although a clown, was a great goalie. He made saves in the playoffs that were unbelievable. He was super clutch.
@go4a24 He was a great goalie, and honestly I would imagine he was a role model for Ron Hextall. Hexie wouldn't dive too much, but he had the same attitude when he defended his crease. Smith and Hextall were a couple of bad ass goalies.
Da Brooons won all dem fights back den, but dey shure dint win any of dem Cups now did they?? LOL. Nah. Dat takes skill and only the Canadiens, Isles and Flyers had that back in the day.
O'Reilly, Wenstink, Jonathan & Milbury. First class goons.
Gillies kicked Jonathan's ass plenty enough. Billy goaded the dumbass into taking a cheapshot. That's where he lived and he was in the heads of EVERY team he faced because of stuff like this.
Not one Islander went after Jonathan... They knew what Billy was all about...

Billy freaking OWNED Jonathan. Dude was the king of the mind games and working the refs and Stanley, that Rhodes Scholar that he was, got duped.

billy would have led the league in unsportsmenlike conduct penalties for his dives in today's nhl. still, one of my favourite goalies ever.

Its amazing how they can take a frozen puck to the head going 100 MPH with no problems but a lazy punch knocks them out cold.

I loved how none of the islanders did anything about it. either they thought it was a dive too, or they didn't wanna take a beating from johnathon

for every cheap shot smith took he gave out 20. A below average goalie on a very good team

@freezibuff, Although the first part of your statement is true, you, being 29, have no idea what kind of goaltender Billy Smith was.
