Yeah, his timing is bad live, I don't know how they stay together sometimes, othertimes they don't. He rushes stuff alot, which sounds weird for thrash metal, but he does. I have to imagine it is hard to play some of the quicker riffs when he is rushing through a part.

what makes a good drummer? lars is very good..why? well for starters he keeps good timming which is the drummers main job..he has written famous drum parts and does what is right for metallica, complex drumming does not make the best drummers.. joey is great and lombardo etc but they are all different styles..as a drummer myself you should know not to judge drummers,..lars deserves respect as do any passionate musicians. grow up guys.

As always, Lars embarrasses himself with his ridiculous performance. The most overrated drummer ever! He can barely play the drums! I've got all Metallica albums and I'm a drummer. Unfortunately Lars influenced me a lot more than I wished. I could be a better drummer if I have never listened to him.
Ok first off,Lars is a kickass drummer when he wants to be.Just sit down and listen to justice and you'l find some fuckin intricate,unexpected and just plain mind blowing drum lines.
Secondly,dont blame Lars for you being shit at the drums.If you are going to blame somebody,blame yourself for not listening to his drumming and taking out the good aspects for yourself.
I believe he never wanted to be a kickass drummer, then. I can play the whole Justice, even though I haven't listened to it for years. His playing in Justice is nothing out of the ordinary. I've ever read some people saying he had to record two drum tracks for it and I think it's possible, since he simplifies the songs when playing live. I believe people who think Lars is good never tried anything else than Metallica. I'm not trying to get you angry, I'm just trying to open your eyes.
Some years ago I though exactly like you, then I left mainstream metal and started to dig some underground metal. That's where real musician are. If you don't believe me, I can give you some examples of real metal drumming. Look for "Necrophagist drumming" in Youtube. Do you want to see what a real solo by a metal drummer is? Lok for "Richard Christy Drum Solo From Audiohammer Studios 2004". I recommend you listen to Death's Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns and Human to start.
@lgalicki I get what you mean.Like take Dave Lombardo for example or even someone like Chris Adler.They are both brilliant drummer's, and are light years ahead of Lars in a sense.I suppose its just my opinion that I think Lars' drumming on the early albums was just exellent.I know its not spectacular,and maybe not that hard to play,but I challenge any drummer out there to come up with a better drum line for some of those early songs.BTW those drum solo's are kick ass,same with the Death stuff.

I never said I was better than Ulrich, but never said he was better than me aswell, but I accept the challenge. Notice may take a month or a couple of months to post it. Editing the videos the way I do gives me a lot of work and I'm already working in other songs. Dyers eve will enter in the end of the line, but it will be there.
For the amount of years that Lars has been playing he is embarrassingly bad still. Taylor Hawkins for example makes lars look like he's just started playing.

Listen everyone, no matter how good someone is, there's no pleasing everyone. You can have a Buddy Rich solo and some Jazz had will find something to knock him for, maybe a Mike Portnoy solo and some metal head will say, "oh well Terry Bozzio can do that better. The bottom line is, like the guy or not he's the reason Metallica even started and for all those people asking us to listen to Death metal bands, they wouldn't even be a discussion of not for bands like Metallica. End of story.

As always, Lars embarrasses himself with his ridiculous performance. The most overrated drummer ever! He can barely play the drums! I've got all Metallica albums and I'm a drummer. Unfortunately Lars influenced me a lot more than I wished. I could be a better drummer if I have never listened to him.

Ok first off,Lars is a kickass drummer when he wants to be.Just sit down and listen to justice and you'l find some fuckin intricate,unexpected and just plain mind blowing drum lines.
Secondly,dont blame Lars for you being shit at the drums.If you are going to blame somebody,blame yourself for not listening to his drumming and taking out the good aspects for yourself.

I believe he never wanted to be a kickass drummer, then. I can play the whole Justice, even though I haven't listened to it for years. His playing in Justice is nothing out of the ordinary. I've ever read some people saying he had to record two drum tracks for it and I think it's possible, since he simplifies the songs when playing live. I believe people who think Lars is good never tried anything else than Metallica. I'm not trying to get you angry, I'm just trying to open your eyes.

Some years ago I though exactly like you, then I left mainstream metal and started to dig some underground metal. That's where real musician are. If you don't believe me, I can give you some examples of real metal drumming. Look for "Necrophagist drumming" in Youtube. Do you want to see what a real solo by a metal drummer is? Lok for "Richard Christy Drum Solo From Audiohammer Studios 2004". I recommend you listen to Death's Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns and Human to start.

@lgalicki I get what you mean.Like take Dave Lombardo for example or even someone like Chris Adler.They are both brilliant drummer's, and are light years ahead of Lars in a sense.I suppose its just my opinion that I think Lars' drumming on the early albums was just exellent.I know its not spectacular,and maybe not that hard to play,but I challenge any drummer out there to come up with a better drum line for some of those early songs.BTW those drum solo's are kick ass,same with the Death stuff.

@lgalicki you need to realize that Lars is playing his shit 25 years before any of those drummers you named. Music evolves and changes. and new things are developed, as in the drum skills of people, but they need to learnt from somewhere. Lars isnt necessarily the best drummer, but he has inspired so many people. thats what makes him amazing

That was a good point there. Maybe I should say Lars was an average interesting drummer until Justice. The weird things he used to do, which were not written in any drumming book, made him a creative drummer. Too bad after 88 he just went downhill.
I gotta say you made me review my point of view, and it has changed.

I never said I was better than Ulrich, but never said he was better than me aswell, but I accept the challenge. Notice may take a month or a couple of months to post it. Editing the videos the way I do gives me a lot of work and I'm already working in other songs. Dyers eve will enter in the end of the line, but it will be there.

For the amount of years that Lars has been playing he is embarrassingly bad still. Taylor Hawkins for example makes lars look like he's just started playing.

thank you! im glad one person sees it. hes not all that great of a drummer given his popularity and time spent in one of the biggest bands known to man kind, to me he kind of slacks the whole meaning of drumming, and that meaning is leveling up through your life, like buddy rich, now he was a well respected drummer

@megaluisdeth Joey sucks ass, and in my opinion, so does Lars. Compared to other metal drummers like Dave Lombardo and Nicko McBrain, those two are nothing. And if you go outside of the metal genre, the list of drummers better than Lars and Joey is uncountable.

wow lars was there a beast, im not saying that isnt now :) the most live videos arent from a dvd so you cant hear the most of the bass when he hits the snare, but in dyers eve he doesnt play with double bass but hes getting older, GET OVER IT
