I remember getting Sonic Jam for Christmas and watching the Sonic CD opening and closing and being blown away by how awesome the music was! It actually made me excited to play the game so I actually BOUGHT a Sega CD and the US version of the game off ebay, I popped the game in expecting some really upbeat music and awesome gameplay...... only to greeted to godawful elevator music. I was so pissed off I actually bought the Japanese version of the game off ebay and played it on an emulator.

@tenkashi1992 I'm basing my opinion on quality of the graphics, physics, level design and overall polish. CD had some pretty awesome gameplay additions - the scaling/rotation-based pseudo-3D on the special stages was pretty impressive. I didn't really like how the physics were sub-par in CD, even in comparison to Sonic 1 & 2.

The US version replaced the soundtrack entirely, though some replacements seem pointlessly similar to the style and theme of the original tracks. Compare tracks from both versions and you'll see. If there was a full-length CGI Sonic movie, this would be the ending credits theme. First, we get the ending scene, and when the music gets more upbeat (at 0:34) , we get a 5 second sequence of each of the characters, with the voice actor's name by the character.
