  • WHAT THE F****!?!?!? i had no idea that uhura was whoopie!!!!!! is that true??? im soooooo confused O.O

  • @mj4ever1332 What? No XD You got that wrong. Whoopie as a young child/woman saw Uhura on Star Trek and has been inspired by her, which helped her to become who she is toay. I suggest you watch "Star Trek: The Captain's Summit" She fully explaines it there =)

  • 4 people disliked this!? Come on people, this is DeForest Kelley!!!

  • Thank you for uploading this :)

  • Gates: "Yes it really took a lot of research."

*Gates pulls down on rope to open door*

    DeForest: "Well I'll be damned"

    LOL!

  • To the 4 guys that didn't like your video, I vote we make red shirts out of them and feed them to the Guardian of Forever, send them back in their red shirt to a time before TOS ! nice job on this. thanks

  • @subron6er Maybe they'll end up in the Roman Coliseum, ready to be fed to some hungry lions, lol.

  • You just have to love De. A class act and a gentleman. I miss him deeply.

  • its amazing how much there is into making one scene thats only seen on the screen for a few seconds

  • This was about the time I was first introduced to Star Trek! And I was lucky enough that my local station (regular TV) was airing both TOS and TNG practically back to back each weeknight!

  • did you guys notice when they were talking about the computer controlled camera to record the Enterprise in drydock, the computer they were using looked like an IBM Portable PC? (model 5155 originally released in 1984)

  • With the exception of Vina, I didn't think there *were* any women on Talos IV. And now I've invited the death penalty by revealing that I've been there...

  • Misspelled name...DeForest....my bad...lol

  • I was one of the organizers for a convention in Kansas many years ago and had the pleasure of being Mr Kelleys assistant for the two days he was there. We talked a great deal and not just about Star Trek. He was a genuine, funny and admirable man in every way. I still have a picture of he and I that was taken with his camera that he sent me a few weeks later and signed: It was MY honor... DeForrest Kelley ....along with a handwritten letter inviting me to visit anytime I was in Ca. RIP De

  • @kskisser

Thank you for sharing this. McCoy's always been one of my favorite characters.

  • 3:07 'each episode of the original series cost $200 000' WTF???

  • at 3:26 reconize the teleporter?? its the same one from the original just upside down

  • @scorand Most of the sets were built on top of the movie sets, which were in turn, built on top of the original series sets!

  • Comment removed

  • He's dead, Jim, but not as we know it !

  • LeVar Burton said in an interview that he was almost as blind as the character he played through the visor, and he often had to be led around the set.

  • He was in the first episode- an admiral being escorted to a shuttle so he could be transported to a nearby ship.

  • Great documentary (never seen it!)...

Although TNG had computers to aid the scenes that were drawn initally for each episode (it's amazing that the computers like the one @5:50!] accomplished that - with 5.25 drives!), it shows how ahead of its time Star Trek TOS really was.

  • Roddenberry was the father of many directors who had interest in space...even if they don't acknowledge him. Yes, with larger budgets for their films, they were able to make a few more bucks, but Roddenberry's message was much more inclusive and personal. And that's why the Star Trek series of television shows and films under Roddenberry and his associates who worked with him are the most endearing and memorable.

  • "Its worse than that im dead jim!"

  • @alphaomega309 I always thought his tombstone should read, "I'm Dead Jim.". If I were him, I would have insisited on it. lol But then I'm just crazy like that.

  • Hard to believe tng is has been around for 25 years. Makes me feel old.

  • We've shared so many adventures with the crews of Star Trek. And every adventure gives millions of us a shared memory. It's these memories, and having shared them that makes us feel a part of something bigger then ourselves. DeForest Kelley is alive now as he always has been, because the memories he's given us all still live on. And after us, more will have memories from these same adventures, and he will live on longer then us all.

  • Nice upload I love how he switches to dr McCoy mode several times.

  • I find it funny if not being a Hypocritc...when Riker once told Q he doesn't need fantasy women. yet he goes to the Holideck and creates them. what a Lier he is.

  • @Astraldragon1 Riker told Q that he doesn't need 'your' (Q's) fantasy women.

  • They dont make em like de anymore. He was a total gent.

  • lebar burton was blind??

  • @DeviousTelevision no, his fictional character on the show was blind

  • @lander77477 So then how'd lebar teach all those kids on reading rainbow how to read??

  • @DeviousTelevision

His character was, not the actor.

  • @Draknfyre Tomorrows Nobodies much?

  • Fuck Berman

  • at 2:48 about the holodeck. 'I don't know....I can imagine quite a bit.'--oops wrong

    universe.

  • I still have a VCR below my DVD player that was bought new in 1986 and the lighted clock has been on almost the entire 24 years, its like a little beacon of stability and permanence

  • @lander77477 That's impressive. I got my first one about then, and it crapped out in the mid-90s.

  • When he said that 14 second shot of the enterprise in dry dock cost $10,000 i literally laughed out loud and said wow!

  • Comment removed

  • Was quality really that bad back then?

  • @Goofyk1d No, but VCR's and VHS's tape went bad fast, Especially if you watched them over and over. They would get warped from heat or stuck in the machine's a lot, lol.

  • @Torus202 Lol. I wouldn't know, because I was born 1996, but I do remember VCR's and VHS's

  • @Torus202 Yeah VHS tapes are like that, but watching an old worn out VHS tape brings back nostalgic memories, like an old song played on an old record player with the pops and cracks, its just part of the character and brings you back in time to that era.

  • lovely

  • A little Soul would be good for the ol' enterprise. :D thanks for the video memories.

  • RIP DeForest Kelley.

  • hard to believe it aired 23 years ago...

  • Are you sure this was September 1990? I swear I saw Worf's hair from the last two seasons, which were '93 and '94....

  • @christytina81 Oops, no I didn't, my bad!

  • Why is there not one of the great Behind-the-Scenes - like this - on a DVD...

  • The doctor is... the best person that has ever lived.

  • I wonder if Whoopi Goldberg ever told Nichelle Nichols of the latters inspiration for the former.

  • @2:04...

"Lemme tell you about one young Black Girl..." LOL!

    It's amazing,such a statement would rile people up today,but back then,it was like,"Yeah okay,tell me!"

It's a bit telling of Kelley's origins...but I also know,it's not said with malicious intent.

  • he was a great western actor also good bad cowboy

  • wow, never seen this before.

  • The Doctor will always be in my heart and my mind - When I am confronted with a stepping stone in life, I always say to myself "Dammit Jim, I'm a....not a ..." - It always helps - God Bless you De - You will always be my Doctor...

  • We miss you Deforest and the others!!

  • to bad Deforest Kelly, James Doohan, and Gene are no longer with us I would like to see a new show that take place at the same time interval between the original series and the next generation

  • I always thought that the Dry-dock shown here from "Family" was one of the first CG models used on Trek due to its absolute smoothness and lack of surface texture. It's interesting to find out that it was an actual physical model used for the shot.

  • Love you...

  • Amazing to see De Forest Kelley again..He will be missed..

  • that was truely awsome . I like all of them . thank you so much for shairing this with everyone .

  • May De rest in peace. He was a wonderful actor and a very kind man.

    We love you, Bones!

  • The next Star Trek movie will be released June 29, 2012.

  • DeForest Kelly rules!

  • I remember loving this mainly because we got to see De and Gates together (nice legs on Gates, as always)....and De's reaction to the doors. "I'll be damned." LOL!

  • Guinan is a great character

  • You know, once you account for inflation, $200,000 in 1987 would be 681,973. So really, TNG wasn't that much more expensive than the original series.

  • destion

    blast it

    XD LOL

heheh kudos to the legendary Deforest Kellys for doing this :D

  • It was Kirk, Spock and Bones who MADE the original series the great stuff it was, and sadly, IMO that was never replicated in the other series like TNG, and DS9-

  • Whoopie Goldberg is a devoted trekkie!

  • THANKS FOR POSTING. ALWAYS LOVED DeFOREST. MY TWO FAVOURITE ST:TNG EPISODES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE ONE WITH McCOY AND THE ONE WITH SCOTTY.

  • LoL, when he was in the turbolift and said "BLAST IT" I just about spat my drink out laughing. I think Star Trek (all of them) is one of those shows that, love it or hate it, no matter how minor the role everyone is really cast perfectly to the point where you see the actor and aren't sure if it's the character or actor you're seeing.

  • wasn't his mistake - he was reading a script - so the writer got the year wrong ;)

  • Very interesting!

  • The scene in the first TNG episode where Admiral McCoy shuffles down the corridor giving Data the gears and bitching about Vulcans was where I said "yes, this is Star Trek."

  • Dammit Jim Im dead.

  • I really miss DeForest Kelley.

    rip.

  • WOW Just WOW

  • Thanks to JJ Abrams, the franchise lives on in movies!

  • RIP DeForest Kelley!! Wishing you were still with us. I would have done anything to have met you.

  • man i feel exactly the same

  • his voice is so wonderful.

there is no one in existence who could be called "the late great" more than him.

  • "BLAST IT!!!!" Mr.Kelly was so aswome

  • @McCoYiSaWsOmE101 "well I'll be damned

  • Rest In Peace DeForest Kelley.

    Thanks for uploading.

  • XD *Ill be damned*

  • RIP De! He was an amazing actor! I miss him!

  • @hpfangirl14 He's alive in our hearts and minds.

  • Rest in peace best actor ever!!

  • Rest In Peace De Forrest Kelley

  • He was a real gentleman....

  • He was. Many people who have met the original cast have said that De and Jim Doohan were the most kindest and giving out of the lot.

  • Every time I hear the Trek theme and hear De's smooth Southern accent, it's tingles my spine.

  • It has the same effect on me!

And I realize I am getting old...The things and the actors I like are slowly going and becoming memories...

  • Very interesting, why did they get rid of the original series. It is such a shame, there could of been a fourth series. :(

  • it wasnt very popular in its ending of the series but it gained population in syndication....

  • @gobldegook1

    ENTERPRISE the Next Generation?

  • The one with Picard and Data etc... My apologies if i got the name wrong I haven't watched an ep in years

  • I went all fangirl when watching this.

  • ditto!

  • I enjoyed watching this, but it's also so sad, knowing De Kelley isn't around anymore. R.I.P. De...you were the true heart of the original Trek.

  • He's really not dead as along as we remember him.

  • @Bartman954 There are always possibilites

  • Oh, De.

"You treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home."

We love you, De. All of Trekdom loves you. And we miss you more than you'll ever know.

Although, knowing you, I think you might anyway.

God Bless, De. I know she brought you home.

  • "Now I'm not like that at all...BLAST IT!"

    God bless you De...

  • That's fabulous. =)

R.I.P. De Kelley; you'll be in our hearts forever! ♥

  • Amen to that!

  • Lol " Planet hell. " . :D

  • Michael dorn is so right; I remember the first time I saw Klingons in 1996 on a rerun of TNG it disgusted me so much I had to turn away. Now days that bulging forehead is actually pretty interesting to look like compared to some of the more mundane looking alien species.

  • Goldburg was always one of my favorite on-off roles in TNG, sort of like Barkley is still one of my favorites to span series. Majel as well, fantastic actress. It was the quality-but-initially-unknown actors, the purpose, that gave it that "glow."

  • There is only ONE Kirk!-The Shat!

  • De was awesome! And I love his attitude about the different versions of Star Trek. I wish more people felt that way!

  • This is one of the best behind the scenes look at TNG I've ever seen, and DeForest Kelley hosting it just puts the icing on the cake. What I especially love about this jewel is that when De is talking about TNG, you can hear the respect in his voice. I've heard that when TNG premiered, some member of the old cast were skeptical about "being replaced." Not DeForest, obviously. It shows - not only was he in the pilot, but you can hear the respect and admiration in his voice. God love him.

  • We lost Mr. Kelley way too soon. What a wonderful gentleman. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Amen to that.

  • I'm a doctor, not an escalator!

I wish I could have met DeForest, he seems like such a lovely man.

  • He did a great job in this narration. If he had chosen to pursue it I think he could have narrated a series the same way that Leonard Nimoy narrated In Search Of. Kelley was thoughtful, reflective, erudite: love the comments about each series standing on their own merits.

  • Miss Bones big time - same with Scotty. I was one of the kids who became an aerospace Engineer because of Scotty (Doohan)...

  • The good Doctor made a mistake though. He stated that TNG takes place 85 years after the original series. Actually its 75. But I won't hold it against him because he's a doctor, not a mathemetician.

  • @bratton79 I think he ment that it has been 85 years since a new episode was made.

  • actually TNG takes place 95 years after TOS but 71 years after star trek 6

  • @bratton79 You are forgetting this was made in 1990 before The Undiscovered Country and Generations. Star Trek V was the current timeline of the original series, and it is presumed Kirk and crew had several years more service before The Undiscovered Country.

  • @bratton79 You are forgetting this was made in 1990 before The Undiscovered Country and Generations. Star Trek V was the current timeline of the original series, and it is presumed Kirk and crew had several years more service before The Undiscovered Country.

  • @bratton79 That was actually a "Geek Test" and you passed with flying colors.

  • @bratton79 90 years and 200 years after enterprise ownd.

  • "... Well I'll be damned..."

    LOL

  • Interesting behind the scenes look. I love the fact that De Kelley hosted this one.

  • At least DeKelley can look down and be happy knowing that Bones is living on through Karl Urban!

  • Karl Urban ain't no Bones McCoy!

  • I think he did rather well, actually. All the casting for the new movie seemed spot on.

"Blast it, Jim! I'm a doctor, not a *fillintheblank*!" I love that. ^_^

  • Bones was the human heart of the original show. He always had this "

gimme a break" attitude that cut through the silliness.

  • DeForest, you are missed.

  • Like it / Loathe it, call it geeky, call it a franchise, whatever,

Star Trek brought science fiction into the American cultural mainstream pretty much all by itself.

    We Miss You, DeForrest Kelley.....

  • TNG was good, but it would've been better if they killed Wesley.

  • Ohhhh,

    I MISS HIM!!!

  • "I'll be damned"@the door lol

  • Rick Berman. Yuck!

  • Ten thousand dollars for that little shot. I hope I'm never paid that much for anything two seconds long.

  • RIP deforest. You were one hell of a sci-fi doctor. :)

  • He would have made one hell of a real doctor. De originally wanted to become a Doctor (because he wanted to help people) but his parents couldn't afford the medical school fees so De became an actor. He based McCoy's humanity on himself while the gritty and abrasiveness on the doctors that looked after his parents in their final years of their lives and how they would update De on their condition.

  • blast it!!

    hahaha i love him.

    :( RIP deforest kelley

  • The only thing that makes no sense is that every time he was on the Bridge etc, it had the sounds of the old Enterprise bridge instead of the Enterprise D's bridge.

  • Loved Gates demonstrating the new doors.

  • I sure miss the familiar cast from the old Star Trek. but I do love the new cast seen in the Next Generation. Star Trek, the next generation will soon be a classic, like the original star trek.

  • lol even Gene Rodenbery's ashes too join Majel and Deforrest R.I.P Gene Rodenberry, Deforrest and Majel :(

  • yes but don't forget James Dohan

  • you also forgot Mark Lenard..one who played in TOS ,some of the movies and a couple of TNG episodes....(Sarek,a Romulan Commander and a Klingon Commander)

  • Sarek was Vulcan Ambassador of the federation, and Spock's father. He wasn't Romulan

  • he is talking about the actor Mark Lenard who played Sarek. In TOS he played a Romulan Commander before he played Sarek and in Star Trek the Motion Picture he played a Klingon Captain

  • Rest in peace Mccoy

  • We'll miss him.

  • Cool! Thanx!

  • is it true McCoy had a daughter named Donna?

  • There was an idea to bring McCoy's daughter on board in TOS in The way to Eden, but they changed it to Chekov's ex-girlfriend. But it's quite established non -canon that he had a bad divorce, went into space and has a daughter called Joanna!

  • Joanna

  • i liked how the TMP Enterprise was displayed behind Roddenberry when he was interviewed

  • Me too=)

  • Great video.

  • Fascinating...and DeForest was great looking at the differences with us. All of the shows are great, but I'll always have a special fondness for the original, it boldly went where no one had gone before. "Dammit it Jim...!!!" Rest In Peace.

  • Majel Roddenberry now joins DeForrest in the eternal journey....RIP Number One...

  • Even if I tried I couldn't say how sad I am that he is no longer with us. Rest in peace DeForest.
