was she a harley by any chance. I've been looking for a harley rat breeder all over the place and I have yet to find one. Can any one help me out with that? I live in eastern Iowa and I can't really do shipping ($200-$300 for shipping rats is a little ridiculous.)

Awe, your babies are so cute. I have rats, mine love tomatoes and ears of raw corn. I will have to try some broccoli. I noticed you have fabric in your cages, how often do you have to wash it? I am thinking about doing that.

I was always scared to let my rat just run free, afraid she'll run into some hole-in-the-wall and never be seen from again.
One day I was cleaning her cage and unknowingly left the cage door open as I went to the freezer, to throw a pizza into the oven and when I looked down, there she was, just standing right the door to the freezer, as if she was saying 'Oh, can I have some of that, too'
That was ADORABLE!!! If I didn't have dogs I would TOTALLY let my ratties play on the floor like that, they'd love it! But they will have to stick to playing between the bed, couch and my shoulders.
Vegetables are fine for rats as long as they are in their regular diet. I wouldn't suggest too much broccoli, but it looks like she only got it as a treat, which compared to other treats is very healthy. It's nice seeing people loving & caring for their rats properly. ^_^

Try tying a piece at the top of a helium balloon. I did that with cheerios and my rat would pull the balloon down to get the cheerio. I would even take him outside to run around. In hindsight that was not a wise thing to do, but it just confirmed that well loved rats will stay with their human buddies.

i got two lovely rats too...before this two i had two others and one used to bite me, what helped me was to be very strict with her...i screamed at her and made her ran away in fear (i know not a very nice way) but after a week of being extremly harsh with her whenever she missbehaved, she accepted me as her new boss and stopped bitting, we even became good friends, and she even started using my shoulder to sleep on:-)
My friends didn't like rats until I showed them this video. Then they said, 'Why can't yours do that cute thing?!' and spent the next hour trying to get my girls to twirl for them. Thank you so much for uploading! What an incredible video!

@NekoHisaharu That is incorrect. Rats can & do 'pass gas' (Having experienced it myself with several that liked to sit on shoulders with their back sides towards my face and let loose lol). Rats cannot vomit. But they can burp & fart, it's from an old myth that allowing your rats to drink carbonated drinks would cause them to explode. All of my elderly rats had a "pepsi bowl' to help with HED (Hind End Degeneration). The caffeine & sugar helped them be more comfortable & able to enjoy old age.
@googieliver My rat used to have free range in my room all the time and free range in the house when supervised. It's a lot easier to rat proof your room than the whole house. Before releasing them into the bowels of your home make sure they come when you call them. This is a REALLY easy trick (lots of treats). I use a kissing sound. I still don't think my pets know or care what their names are.

i have pet rats and they are really good but if they hear a sudden noise like a door or a footstep they panic and run how can i get them to not be so afraid
To get them not to be scared just play with them and give lots of treats, so they'll feel more safe. Make not so loud sounds that they'll get used to, then increase the sound over days.
I had a rat that was a jalapeno-holic. Though he didn't do tricks for them, he'd go from loving rat into evil rat if you had them and he couldn't get them. (For all of those wonder how I learn this, them I ordered a sandwhich from an asian resturant and I mistook them for green peppers so I let him steal them cause I don't like green peppers).
I couldn't have a rat as a pet. I'd keep wanting to hug em to death and their bodies can't take that. I can't have small animals for pets for this very reason...:(

I got two baby hooded rats last year which ireally worked for. I saved up 100 dollars for the cage and bought the baby girls myself. They acted just like this, and one of the girls I nicknamed "spider rat" because she was able to climb upside down in her cage. The girls were wonderful and funny and goofy just like this Iris is here. They were my world... But died unexpectedly of heart failure at just 8 months old... Rest In Peace Chloe & Lily...
She is absolutely wonderful! I want my boys to be able to do that, but my houseing director at school won't let me, and at home we have three cats and a dog. Course, they've already bitten the dog so I don't think he'll bother them, and the biggest cat is trained not to go after rodents in the house, but the kittens might end up being killed if they mess with my Elmo and Cid! :) They're so sweet I love ratties.
I use to have a hooded male rat named cheerio when I was 15. He was given to me by my mom after a student left for college. My heart was lit up with joy the first time I saw him poke out his head from his plastic iglue. He was a very huge rat, wasn't very energetic, but always jumped out of his cage from the sound of me opening up his little wheat nugget bag. Sometimes I wish I could pet his little furry head again. R.I.P. old friend, you were the best. :)

great! I keep my rats free in a big terrace, but I never admit them in the rest of the flat, even if after seeing your video I'm seriously tempted...What about yours? Do you close the cage sometime or just use it as a safe shelter for the rats? Thanks!
@MichelleKozlowski Thats sad. I had a pet named Roxie, my first baby. She died in 09, she lived for 4 years. My third pet rat, Shoobie, sister of Puma died in 2010. I now have two of them, Omehlet and Puma. Puma just recently got a Tumor in the end of 2010, and it's gotten pretty big. I don't know how long she will survive. But she looks like Iris... Omehlet is blind. They love eachover.

and handle them alot in the beginnig. first though let them check out there new cage and then the home. make sure you have lots of treats for them. that way they'll get to know you better.
@basemalt Read up on rats, educate yourself with books, online forums, and make sure you have a small animal vet picked out for any medical problems that come along. Also, give it lots of love, patience and attention. Single rats get very lonely and depressed. Can you get two rats instead of one? Two are just as easy to take care of as one.
just got 2 rats that look like yours they are called fancy rats but could just be store name, i named one goliath and the other zeus :) goliath has a spot on his rump and likes my pocket, and zeus has a stripe down his back, and likes exploreing..espesscially in my shirt lol.

It may be a little late to say this but brocolli is bad for rats.. it can make them sick because it gives them gas and they cant fart very well

I got two baby hooded rats last year which ireally worked for. I saved up 100 dollars for the cage and bought the baby girls myself. They acted just like this, and one of the girls I nicknamed "spider rat" because she was able to climb upside down in her cage. The girls were wonderful and funny and goofy just like this Iris is here. They were my world... But died unexpectedly of heart failure at just 8 months old... Rest In Peace Chloe & Lily...

She is absolutely wonderful! I want my boys to be able to do that, but my houseing director at school won't let me, and at home we have three cats and a dog. Course, they've already bitten the dog so I don't think he'll bother them, and the biggest cat is trained not to go after rodents in the house, but the kittens might end up being killed if they mess with my Elmo and Cid! :) They're so sweet I love ratties.

I use to have a hooded male rat named cheerio when I was 15. He was given to me by my mom after a student left for college. My heart was lit up with joy the first time I saw him poke out his head from his plastic iglue. He was a very huge rat, wasn't very energetic, but always jumped out of his cage from the sound of me opening up his little wheat nugget bag. Sometimes I wish I could pet his little furry head again. R.I.P. old friend, you were the best. :)

great! I keep my rats free in a big terrace, but I never admit them in the rest of the flat, even if after seeing your video I'm seriously tempted...What about yours? Do you close the cage sometime or just use it as a safe shelter for the rats? Thanks!

@MichelleKozlowski Thats sad. I had a pet named Roxie, my first baby. She died in 09, she lived for 4 years. My third pet rat, Shoobie, sister of Puma died in 2010. I now have two of them, Omehlet and Puma. Puma just recently got a Tumor in the end of 2010, and it's gotten pretty big. I don't know how long she will survive. But she looks like Iris... Omehlet is blind. They love eachover.

and handle them alot in the beginnig. first though let them check out there new cage and then the home. make sure you have lots of treats for them. that way they'll get to know you better.

@basemalt Read up on rats, educate yourself with books, online forums, and make sure you have a small animal vet picked out for any medical problems that come along. Also, give it lots of love, patience and attention. Single rats get very lonely and depressed. Can you get two rats instead of one? Two are just as easy to take care of as one.

just got 2 rats that look like yours they are called fancy rats but could just be store name, i named one goliath and the other zeus :) goliath has a spot on his rump and likes my pocket, and zeus has a stripe down his back, and likes exploreing..espesscially in my shirt lol.
