I would have confiscated it and handed it in to the office in a labeled bag with the students ID number and have the parents collect if the student is a minor. Cell phone use isn't tolerated in theaters. Why should it be tolerated in a class? The student was rude to the teacher and other students who were trying to listen. The teacher didn't seem angry or out of control at all. He walked over and grabbed the cell phone without missing a beat. Good for him.

This video looks staged to me. My reason for thinking that is this:
1st. Why was the guy video taping in the first place?
2nd. There is no way a teacher would smash a phone and not get a single reaction from the class. No noises what so ever.
3rd. Any taught teacher would know he would probably have to pay for the phone if not sued. Unless he was having a really bad day. And if he was he probably would have yelled at the kid some.

Cell phone use isn't tolerated in theaters. Why should it be tolerated in a class? The student was rude to the teacher and other students who were trying to listen. The teacher didn't seem angry or out of control at all. He walked over and grabbed the cell phone without missing a beat. Good for him.

Excellant response from the teacher. I think it's understood that you don't bring your cell phone into the classroom, leave it on, and if it rings, sit there and talk on it while the teacher's lecturing.
I think it should be a policy where if your phone rings in class, it's taken up. If you answer and start talking on it, it's destroyed in a similar fashion as this.

This video looks staged to me. My reason for thinking that is this:
1st. Why was the guy video taping in the first place?
2nd. There is no way a teacher would smash a phone and not get a single reaction from the class. No noises what so ever.
3rd. Any taught teacher would know he would probably have to pay for the phone if not sued. Unless he was having a really bad day. And if he was he probably would have yelled at the kid some.

That is awesome. He didn't get mad, he didn't lose track of his lecture. Dollars to donuts he set a rule down at the beginning of the semester and warned folks of what would happen. Gotta follow through with the spanking or it's an idle threat... I had an electronics teacher who'd snip your earphone buds in lab if you were wearing them while working... same principle applies.
