  • i like most of those people in this

  • Coming from some shows that are supposed to be comedic, others years old.

That is like using film clips from times when the n word was socially accepted to stop the use of it.

  • The office clip was a piece of satire for your cause. You should have been smart enough to catch that.

  • @MisterMisc The new term is Intellectual Disability. And we're hoping that a new, equally negative connotation is not added. The new 'r' word is respect. Which is what we all deserve.

  • @MisterMisc,

why can't you just call them what they are? PEOPLE.

You don't need a special word for them, they are people.

There are people with anger management issues.

There are people with brown hair.

There are people with special needs.

    It's about respect, for everyone.

That's what the R-word campaign is.

  • haha i knew you would show southpark

  • Okay, now do an entire montage of "Family Guy". :-P

  • So what are we supposed to call those who were formerly known as being r_______? It seems to me that any word or phrase you come up with will then eventually have negative connotations and then there'll be a campaign to end that word.

Are people really thinking this through or are a bunch of "celebrities" just trying to show their "concerned" side?

  • This video is great. The r-word offends me because I work with special needs kids, and I am good friends with many special needs kids. People need to stop using the r-word in everyday use in place of words like stupid or dumb, because I know that my friends are not stupid or dumb, they are incredably intelligent :) So don't use the r-word!

  • You guys the one from the ringer was put at the end to make the point of Johnny Knoxville being sympathetic. So shut up and think.

  • @missmollybear93: tell that to "mistershinobi"

  • Seriously you guys need to stop being so ignorant and hateful. The r word hurts me because I work with special needs kiss. Is it really that important to you to say the r word! Your not going to die if you don't say it. But regardless of how you mean the word, people stiill hear you. And it hurts. Do you want to be a compassionate person or an intolerant heartless person?

  • Marco from Degrassi!

  • Retarded is a descriptive word:

Delayed in development; Of a person, having mental retardation; By extension, of a person or thing, stupid; senseless; irrational; Under the influence of alcohol

If they fit the bill why not describe them so?

  • i hear what your saying.....but i dont give a crap. The word is in my vocabulary and it will forever be.

Hey i dont like being called fat but im not gonna cry about it. I just want to say its sad that this coalition is good at spending countless hours on this for reason of there own desires.

  • @sammallory79 you are an idiot. i am offended by the r word and i dont have a mental disability. You comparing being called fat is not even comparable. They dont have a choice. they were born that way. you on the other hand can change being "fat" it is something you can get rid of. These innocent people are being made fun of for things they have no control of. get a life and think before you speak

  • @Targarianen.. using the r word IS negative behavior AND bullying. If a word offends a WHOLE group of people then we should STOP using the word!! Period.

  • There are more people that the word doesn't affect in a negative way. Why should we cater to the minority? Maybe just stop being so sensitive.

  • a lot of these were just bad uses of the word, but in the office the show was commenting on how stupid michael is.

  • michael scott is funny as hell

  • this is a mis-guided cause. few actually use the word "retarded" in a derogatory manner towards the handicapped. the people who do are a-holes and always will be a-holes. a mean spirited person will just find a new word to be hurtful with.

if i say a party is lame, am disrespecting those that walk with a limp? no. it means the party is lame. that's all. language evolves.

what you ARE doing is reconnecting the word "retard" with handicapped people, a disassociation i had made long ago.

  • The clip from The Office is a parody. If you are familiar with the character of Michael Scott you will know that this line was MEANT to degrade him and show how ignorant and clueless he is. When heard in context, it does not fit with the rest of these clips.

  • "ROCK AND ROLL!"

that's the only R-word our singer cares about.

  • its treated as slang. The term for mentally slow changes every ten years.

  • Great, it's the thought police. Sure it's a bad word, but do we want others telling us what we can and connot say. This groupe is fine with the F word. they just want to controll anything they feel does not fit in there realm of P.C.(not your computer).

  • In the dictionary retarded means also an idiot. Don't see what's the big deal.

  • @turreu In the past, moron, imbecile, and idiot were medical terms for levels of intellectual disability.

  • Breaks my heart! Thanks for posting. I don't know why it's so hard for people to understand how hurtful this derogatory term is. The fact is that it shouldn't really matter what anyone understands. People have been told this word hurts--that should be enough to find a different word!

  • I'm just saying I respect the whole movement and mentally handicapped people didn't have a choice to be this way but where Im from no ones singles the mentally handicapped as r-words but they say as a synonym of stupid but still it needs to go away but not trying to diminish the hope but its most likely going to continue to spoken just as the n-word because thats the way people are

  • ...and yet you use a line from THE RINGER.

    .....riiight.

  • i totally agree

  • @mistershinobi the ringer was actually very sympathetic towards the mentally disabled.

  • Great video. People who perpetuate and promote the use of the r-word as a demeaning slur simply do not understand the pain and anguish that parents of special needs children feel every time we hear it. If they did, they would not use the word -- period.

  • @gopats86

What about people who have low IQs as a result of bad genetics? They can't change their genes. Should we stop using the word "stupid", "idiot" or "moron" because it might offend them as well?

IMO time is better spent on fighting against bullying and negative behavior in general rather than focusing on a word, especially since words can be used in various different context.

  • @Targarianen Agreed! Best post here.

  • Actually, it's about the fact that people with intellectual disabilities and the people who love them feel real hurt every time they hear the word used either as an insult or a joke. It's about my baby son, who has Down syndrome, not having to grow up and learn the hard way that some people really are dicks. It's about saying to yourself: "If someone tells me over and over that this word hurts them, maybe I should stop trying to defend my right to not be 'censored' and just stop using it."

  • You don't need to stop saying the word, you need to stop calling mentally retarded people names. Retarded means slow, when something or someone is acting retarded, you call them/it retarded. You shouldn't call a mentally challenged person "retarded" in the same way you shouldn't call them "stupid". It's not about banning words and censoring people, it's about not being a dick and calling people names who don't have a choice about the way they are.

  • This word was used years ago to diagnose people with intellectual disabilities. "Mentally Retarded" was the term. Now days, people use the word everywhere for no reason. They replace the word 'stupid' with the word 'retarded' and it's not right. Those who are 'mentally retarded' (I hate the term, btw,) are not stupid! End the word permanently. It's offensive. I have a nephew that is intellectually disabled and when I hear the word I get more offended than I could ever begin to explain.

  • @mattdistad But if you're calling someone who is being stupid a retard, aren't you saying that retard=stupid? Yes. So that's still offensive even if it's not used towards someone with a developmental delay.
