Up until now I would have said that "One Less Bell To Answer" belonged to Marilyn McCoo and the 5th Dimension. Barbra's version sends chills up my spine I have never gotten before when I've heard this song. She truly owns everything she sings!
@NewTada for 30 years, I imagined what it would be like to see her sing this piece...having NO idea she had performed it LIVE, being given this clip by a friend in "the business" and seeing it for the first time, was one of those "moments you remember all your life." Our new generation will NEVER understand what ground she broke for them...the ultimate crossover artist, how she altered the playground, forever.
Now this is talent , Glee can take a hike. Barbra was so brilliant to do this duet with herself. I love it. She makes me cry every time I listen to her.
OMG...that voice! She was the best for forty years! Nobody came even close to her--vocally or artistically. I can't stand to hear some of the people younger than 40 who speak of her as if she is an old discard. It's complete ignorance. Streisand will be listened to long after we're all gone. Most of the others will be forgotten.
she was the best when she first started out. none of the affectations. i think the bette midler segment on the next bachrach special is actually better than streisand's segment.
This song made me burst in to tears at the line "I don't know how in the world to stop thinking of him, 'cause I still love him so". Summed my break up with a loved one......so pleased we're friends now but it summed up the feeling at the time. Babs is Fab in this and she looked great too.
Wow! was going to share this video but my window wont open. Beautiful Medley by the beautiful and wonderful Miss Barbara Strisand. Wish someone could say this about me if i made a song, or write a best selling novel!
LA STREISAND....simply the best! every song w/ her is like a 3 act play. FLAWLESS. saw her live 4 times, as clear live as she is on records...incredible pipes. one of a kind in our lifetime, and she's not finished yet. been in the game for 45 years. rock on babs.
Althought the 5th Dimension had a hit (and rightfully so!) with this, the first actual recording of this song was by Keely Smith (of Keely Smith & Louis Prima). A great version, nonetheless. Thank you!
Wonderful. This is my favorite era for Streisand. I love the pop stuff much more than that standards. I never tire of the albums from Stoney End to Songbird.

This is a great Streisand performance, I find better than the album version. Her pefectionism was unecessary. She could and still can be perfect with the first take.
Egad, I was 6 years old - the same age as my daughter now - when this came out. Fantastic version. And I like it very much that the kids of the Glee generation are discovering this song if not this version as well.
Well, what can you say? It is Barbra Streisand, the greatest singer of our time. The Glee version was INCREDIBLE...I am 52 years old and just got back from Bermuda when my partner's kids were going on and on about the great song on Glee. I wonder if she was thinking about Elliot Gould when she recorded this. It's so heartfelt and sad, and just about the time of her divorce from him. Just a thought.
After watching Glee last night, as much I loved how well they did it, well.. I had to find Barbra's version... the definitive version! Thanks for posting this!

@slp1964 I've just done the exact same thing after watching Glee here in UK! Like the Glee version sure, Kristen Chenoweth is great, but this, well THIS is WONDERFUL! @KJBigBelter thank you SO much for posting.
It is true....her rare performances at the time were an "event" I was at UCSB at the time, and when this special aired, the enormous lounge in the big dorm I was in was filled...both guys and girls...she didn't appear often, but gave so much...her performances will be studied 100 years from now...
I remember the original version of this song in the late 60s when it was first recorded. The obvious allusion is to the breakup of a marriage or an affair, but the song had another meaning altogether for my young wife at that time. I was serving in Vietnam, and she has always associated the song with my absence at that time, and worrying that perhaps I would not make it back (as so many did not). Sometimes art has meanings beyond those intended by the artist, as in this case.

It wasn't for me, until Yentl that I asked a friend who had EVERY album, to let me check out the "old stuff" ...well it was like crack I guess? And YES, THIS song would be my MUST HAVE for ALL TIME too!
MY GIRL!!! Nobody does it better!! This number still resonates with me today ...and remains one of my all time favorites. So strong and pure. So beautifully delivered.
I wore this track out on the album (Barbra Joan Streisand if memory serves) - individually, they stand as two of the most heartfelt songs of love lost ever written. By combining them and investing so much passion in her performance, she created a masterpiece. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite Streisand song but this would be near the top of the list - breathtakingly beautiful.
HERE HERE! It's like a soliloquy and could easily be the finale of a musical today. She has always loved her songs to have beginnings, middles and ends and with THIS one WE get two of all the above!
@KJBigBelter Love your comments. You are so right and insightful with regard to Barbra. I'm just now learning how to communique in YouTube, so hopefully will talk to you again. We seem to share the same understandings and perspectives with regard to LaStreisand... Best, Preston
her voice just soars! I mean it reaches such great heights, hard to express what I mean. To watch her sing, or act, Barbra is unbeatably mesmerizing!! I wonder why no one comments on her beauty! She has such beautiful eyes!! So blue, gorgeous! This was an amazing performance, one of many great performances!
I saw this in 1971 -- when I was a teen -- watching with my mom. I went out and bought my first Streisand album - this one -- and have most of them. This song is the best of the best!
When Barbara sings it always feels like it's her heart that does the singing. Her beautiful voice is just the medium for it. That's why she is so unique. Nobody like her.
Had a childhood crush (9 yrs old) on her befor I knew who she was, when I saw her in a movie with Jack Nickelson (back in the 60s). He and she was sitting on the couch while he was playing a guitar to her. She was dressed in a pretty black leather skirt and boots, black pretty hair, black eye make up and brow, and of course that big nose wich added to her sexy look. I was only 9 years old but I still caught it all and desired her even at that early age. In fact I craved to have her back then.
This simply took my breath away. Beyond perfection.
I have so much too say but at the same time I"m speechless; dumbfounded at hearing such a brilliant singer and her flawless ethereal performance!!!!!!
The 20 year olds in my class kept asking me who I consider to be one of the female great singers of our time.....I simply played this......nothing need more be said
I definitely need a powerful cd player and the cd which includes this super powerful and flawless performance!! maybe something hi-fi? a boombox? any suggestions? cuz you see, my cd player is broken.
KJ- Do you have the lyrics for Babs version? Thanks for posting this! I've always had a difficult time understanding the words. This helped though I still can't make out what she is saying near the ending! Drr!
I remember an early "video" of this song by the Fifth Dimension with a woman walking about an apartment, then going over to a picture of her son killed in Vietnam. "One less bell to answer, one less egg to fry" took on a whole new meaning. Oh, the folly and tragedy of war.
I couldn't find the version by the 5th Dimension but, and not to overthink an incredible song, this is two songs - "One Less Bell" & "A House is not a home" combined. Both Barcharach's, Luther Vandross also did "A House is not a home" with lyric variations. The one line, "don't let one mistake keep us apart" makes Babs version a romantic song. Please post the 5th dimension's version if you have it. Sad, either way.
they all have that 1 line, lol its apart of the song, and when luther sings that line, it makes your soul weep, but of course barbra is good, but I dont like this version she has a better version ive heard on lp
Way back in 1894, a little girl named Madeline Crothe was skipping through the woods when a mysterious man in black snatched her. He brought her to his house, tourtered her, and starved her to death. Send this to 6 videos in the next 30 min. and you will be safe, but if you don't... at approximately 1: 34 tonight you will wake up to see an aneorexic child holding a bloodied up knife and she will kill you" less sorry this scares
If ever I need reminding of why I'm a Streisand fan, which I don't , then this clip explains it all. Let's hope there will be another set of London concert dates not too far in the future.
one of my very favorites in ALL the years of listening to her!

Spectacular rendition.

When I was a little girl, I nearly wore this album out. To find a video of this extraordinary track is beyond a miracle. Thank you so much!

Oh, the folly and tragedy of war.
youyong28 2 years ago
I couldn't find the version by the 5th Dimension but, and not to overthink an incredible song, this is two songs - "One Less Bell" & "A House is not a home" combined. Both Barcharach's, Luther Vandross also did "A House is not a home" with lyric variations. The one line, "don't let one mistake keep us apart" makes Babs version a romantic song. Please post the 5th dimension's version if you have it. Sad, either way.
honkifyouluvdogs 2 years ago
they all have that 1 line, lol its apart of the song, and when luther sings that line, it makes your soul weep, but of course barbra is good, but I dont like this version she has a better version ive heard on lp

I like marilyn more for this particular song too. But nobody tops Babs on most everything else.

sorry this scared me..

Never gave a second thought that Marilyn McCoo was a great vocalist, but she definitely was better than Streisand in ONE LESS BELL TO ANSWER.

If ever I need reminding of why I'm a Streisand fan, which I don't , then this clip explains it all. Let's hope there will be another set of London concert dates not too far in the future.
