I think Portnoy has a bit more technical ability yet, Peart is the master though and the buddy rich of rock but, Steve Gadd and Vinnie Colaiuta are technical drummer doesn't really get better then them Dave Weckl is a monster too
I don't think we should compare musicians. It's not about a performance, it's about art. The two are gods at what they do. You like or not, people who compare musicians are just idiots.
Mangini is probably the most technically talented. But you can hear Peart's style in Mangini, Portnoy, and many prog drummers today. Imo, Danny Carey is the most Creatively advanced drummer today and kicks ass. Listen to Triad live w/solo.
Wel i just have to say that the recording of portnoys solo SUCKS!! If you'\r not a drummer i think that Portnoy might sound more awsome, but for a drummer Neil is better. But in the songs, Mike does more cool stuff. And Neil has details ;)
Just banging around on the drums extremely fast and furious doesn't make you a better drummer. Honestly, that isn't really that hard at all. It is the technical side of things that makes a GREAT drummer ...... Neil is the one and only drum technician.
@ModulatedTesticle Well I love them both haha, seen rush and dt several times this year, both amazing. But just as a note, Portnoy has written alot of amazing songs, and Peart doesn't actually write any haha, he does the lyrics, and the drums, hes only written melodies and bits of songs once or twice. Dirk and Lerxst do the songs!
@shakalamon yeah definitly man. I saw rush in Chicago on 4-12-1, and i almost shit myself. at the time I posted the comment, I hadnt really gotten into any of DT's good music. Now, I cannot help but believe the two are both better in their seperate things. Portnoy= boss of odd time signatures. Peart= best at solos and figuring out beats.
@ModulatedTesticle Thats awesome! I was so lucky, got to see rush 3 times this year nd DT twice, and I have to say, both bands were playing the best i have ever seen them. DT's drummer now is mike mangini, who is just as incredible as these 2, his technical ability is truly beyond belief or equal, but he's yet to prove himself at song writing/ composition. But yeah i totally aagree with, Peart's solo's are untouchable, but portnoys use of time sigs in songs and his fills are equally awesome!
Both are great - Neil has more experience, of course. Both have their own style. Neil broke the ground, Mike was greatly inspired by him. They are both a part of my favorite drummers! Truly gifted musicians and musical creators!
I look at Neil as the master... Period. Mike is like the gifted apprentice. He's possibly better in a technical sense, but the master always has tricks up his sleaves from years and years of practice and perfection.
Portnoy. That's not to say that Portnoy's better; just that I prefer him. The rhythms he deals with are incredible and he can make any time signature sound both effortless and listenable. Peart is so much better at solos, but Mike's just incredible in a band situation.
@nosamcuminhand1 I didn't say Peart isn't great in band situations. He cleeeearly is to be involved in this discussion; all I said was I like Portnoy's style more!
As a drummer of 15 years - comparing just these 2 drum solos - Mike Portnoy DESTROYS Neil Pert. But Pert came first so you have to give him credit for being the inspiration. When it comes down to technicality and overall strength as a drummer - Portnoy wins.
@strikeanote kk first of all; it's PEART, second of all; Neil is without question one of the best technical drummers of our time, so if they arent even, which i personally dont think they are, then portnoy is slightly behind because its nearly impossible to be more technically talented the Peart, and like you said he inspired Portnoy so ,without going into it, this also gives him the 1 up on portnoy..idk is there anything else to make Portnoy a better drummer? cause the tally is in Peart's favor
@shlbirdman14 well in terms of the inspiring thing geddy lee might have inspired john myung but that doesnt mean geddy is better than john no disrespect though i a huge DT and Rush fan
The thing with Portnoy is that he is without a doubt much more creative than Peart in his drumming. If you take the songs that Dream Theatre have, than they are so much much more harder to play than the songs that Rush have.
But i don't really think you can make them compete, because they are so different drummers :)
Peart has better Techniques but Portnoy is more creative, that's what i think !! ;D
no disrespect to portnoy but neil peart is just an all around better drummer it almost sounds like portnoy is better cause he didnt use the good part of neil pearts solo
In my opinion Mike is as good as Neil because they interact in the same Genre and Mike said that Neil is one of his favourite Drummers and also that Neil was one of the biggest influences to him so it's 50:50 :)
@TheProgRock LOL! Love Gavin! I grew up with Neil so he's my number 1. and I think Mike and gavin like Neil a little too. they and so many others are great. it is natural to have a favorite but to compare is a waist of time. Love my drums and my drummers!!!!!!! Rock on.
mike raped neil straight up the ass!!!! mike has just as good rhythm and plays faster. which playing faster isn't everything. but i guess its the acquired taste of music i have as a person. i like an edgier type of music with fast drum fills. and plenty of double bass. so mike portnoy is my guy. but neil without a doubt is still a great drummer himself. but im gonna go with mike.
I'm biased. I'm not really a fan of Neil Peart at all because I think all his playing sounds super stiff. And as an artist, I think you should evolve.....I haven't heard Neil evolve and I would sure as hell like to hear him in another band setting to prove me wrong. IMHO, he sounded godawful on the Burning for Buddy tribute stuff.
@BeatProfessor In Neil's defense, he WAS one of the pioneers to bring progressive rock drumming into the mainstream and influenced tens of thousands of drummers today.
neil all the way. i grew up on neil, so NEIL! he is truely a legend. Mike, can play some good time signatures sure, but neil has more experience, and can really play the drums. (obviously)
PORTNOY!!!!, neil did nothing but snare, high hat, and a little bass. while portnoy on the other hand used about every drum he had at his disposal. portnoy is faster, has just as good timing as pert he just has a different style of playing, and has better presence.
@aakkoin idk about that, i saw him live with avenged sevenfold on uproar tour, and he did tons of snare there. idk why, but he did. im sure portnoy can do everything that peart can, its just they have different style, and peart is more of a classic than portnoy. put it this way peart is like the doors, and portnoy is like metallica. metallica is the most popular metal band in the world and people love them, but the doors are an american classic.
@seventhserpent check out the rest of that peart solo, he uses all the toms, and especially all the high pitched toms which sound freeekin awsome. very melodical and technical, its on exit stage left check it out.
Neil Peart is a mathematical genius; & this factors heavily into his sense of timing. Don't get me wrong... Mike Portnoy is an INCREDIBLE drummer, but my money would still be on Peart!
Vs. WTF music is about soulful expression carried on by beening in touch with the divine. NOT BS like who is better than another player. Everyone has weakness an strenghten, and no one is greater than his MASTER. Speaking in the divine comos of the matter.
Well I have always been a Rush fan, but this is solely because of Peart! As a drum lover I must admit I do love me some Mike. I think what differs in my opinion than the other posts is that I like the overall sound of Dream Theater better than the overall sound of Rush, mainly due to my dislike of Geddy's voice (not lyrics). Drums rock!
oh my fucking god, another "Clone"..boomp boomp wacka wacka boomp wack wack smash smash...god i had to push cigarette butts in my ears, fucking terrible, yeah yeah yeah...another bozo wasting his own talent to someone else's recording..gee fucking whiz, there is only one Niel Peart, serious dude, start you own band and record your own style, not trying to copy someone else's drumming, you might as well be masturbating with a cheeze grater, cuz if it's not your own music, no one gives a shit.
both are so good. I'm a long time Niel fan. However I will say this. You wanna see something crazy search George Kollias aons of buring galaxies. I'm not a speek metal guy but that video is simply sick. Real extreme stuff.
@draakheated No man Peart rapes in songs. Listen to Bytor and the Snowdog, La Villa Strangiato, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, he is pretty much the highlight or most noticable sound in most of the songs. I don't even have to go into detail with his solo ability.
@Craziness31 Royster is damn good and amazing, but i wouldn't put him on Neil of Mikes level. But more personally I like Neil and Mikes styles more then Bonham, or Gadd. No one can argue with Rich though.
@AssyMcgeeKicksAce Are you saying Neil and Mike are better than Royster? The sentence confused me. And whichever style you like better doesn't deny the fact of Bonham and Gadd being better than Peart.
The answer is within what dream theater does. They cover Rush songs they try to be Rush but need to try harder. Neil Peart Pretty much owns every single drummer out there!
sorry, guys but portnoy is better than peart.of course neal is his idol but say without peart there is`nt portnoy is crazy, is the same thing that say without elvis there is`nt rock and there is`nt peart.i like peart and portnoy two masters of the drums but portnoy is more complety and more fast.
You DO realize, don't you, that pitting the student (Portnoy) against the master (Peart) is madness, right? Portnoy is good; in places, awesome, but he's not worthy of licking Peart's toes. Peart is fluid, seamless, engaging, and plays rhythmically complex patterns in a manner that is easy to understand and easier to get into. Mike, bless his heart, is fast, yes...but that's about it. And I'm quite sure Mike would say the same.
Neil's playing is complex yet rhythmic. Mike's skill is speed..that's about it. The reason I don't care about Dream Theater is the annoying and unnecessary speed riffs. The one I'd compare closest to Neil is Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree. Just my opinion.
Both are great, but never forget that Peart is "the professor." His drumming is much cleaner, more precise. Portnoy tries to throw TOO MUCH into his drumming and it makes it muddled. But, they're both great, but there'd be no Portnoy without Peart paving the way.
@senecadawg2 now thats the smartest comment I have read. they are both on a level few drummers reach in a life time. better? who cares. they are both Great.
better does not exist in many cases. if you compare one of thease guys to Ringo or anyone like that, then you can. Bothe mike and neil are a level of ability that are in a simular level. yes Neil has been a major influence for mike but mike can accually play. Neil has influenced millions of drummers including me, but I cant do what they do. give it up for my two idols.
Portnoy never seemed like much of a soloist to me. He does so much during a normal DT song that his solos don't sound any different. Neil Peart on the otherhand has solos that he has composed and developed.
Now, honestly, to me Mike Portnoy plays more difficult material more often than Peart does. But that's not to say Peart can't wail himself. This just comes down to the difference between Rush and Dream Theater. Both are brilliant musicians.
Neil is better but portnoy is a very talented drummer too, and if you have not noticed mike portnoy is a major neil peart fan, probably his number one fan, and if I chose anyone that comes close to peart it would be mike
i cant say who is the best...but these two are the best drummers in the world..they both are #1...and the rest of the drummers are far behind these GODS
@dropehe nah, the Portnoy solo does not do Mike justice at all. Don't base your decision off of just this video, like most people are. Both great, it's a matter of opinion, I'm sure if you asked Niel he would tell you Mike is absolutely amazing.
I LOVE both, Niel is the Father, Mike is the son. thats the way I see it. Mike has some things that Niel just dosnt go to, like a tone of double bass, Mike just goes nuts with it while Niel stays away from it and does his thing. I would love to see a tour of both bands and have them play eachother songs. Niel Must be proud to have such a great fan.
I think that a drummer is better playing by himself on his own time alone, than with a band,or in a solo when they are expected to do good. That said,I believe that mike and neil are equal...Neil is older and somewhat more experience, but mike has youth and pwer in his playing.
you can't compare them, seeing how heavily Portnoy's influenced by Neil. you can find sooo many Neil'isms in Portnoys drumming, i bet if you told Portnoy hes better than Neil he'd slap you lol
I love them both. Some days I like Portnoy more and other days I like Peart more. Bottom line is, without Peart there would be no Portnoy!

both are so good. I'm a long time Niel fan. However I will say this. You wanna see something crazy search George Kollias aons of buring galaxies. I'm not a speek metal guy but that video is simply sick. Real extreme stuff.

on a solo: peart on a song: portnoy
draakheated 1 year ago
@draakheated No man Peart rapes in songs. Listen to Bytor and the Snowdog, La Villa Strangiato, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, he is pretty much the highlight or most noticable sound in most of the songs. I don't even have to go into detail with his solo ability.
nevinkel 1 year ago
mike portnoy the best drummer in the wolrd but niel peart the best drummer in the history of the drummer. neil peart = legend
the7dreams 1 year ago
I have to disagree with some of you. Legends would be the best: Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Steve Gadd, and more modern, Tony Royster Jr.
Not Neil, he's good, but not a legend.
Craziness31 1 year ago
@Craziness31 Royster is damn good and amazing, but i wouldn't put him on Neil of Mikes level. But more personally I like Neil and Mikes styles more then Bonham, or Gadd. No one can argue with Rich though.
AssyMcgeeKicksAce 1 year ago
@AssyMcgeeKicksAce Are you saying Neil and Mike are better than Royster? The sentence confused me. And whichever style you like better doesn't deny the fact of Bonham and Gadd being better than Peart.
Craziness31 1 year ago
The answer is within what dream theater does. They cover Rush songs they try to be Rush but need to try harder. Neil Peart Pretty much owns every single drummer out there!
Rushguitarist1 1 year ago
you can't compare portnoy and peart... it's just... wrong....
ironpapa0110 1 year ago
sorry, guys but portnoy is better than peart.of course neal is his idol but say without peart there is`nt portnoy is crazy, is the same thing that say without elvis there is`nt rock and there is`nt peart.i like peart and portnoy two masters of the drums but portnoy is more complety and more fast.
lucas52612 1 year ago
@lucas52612 Portnoy faster than Peart is complete BULLSHIT! Peart actually played with Buddy Rich and Mike just watched and shit his pants

Just my opinion.

everyone knows neil is the shit he could play bett with his dick but mike is prolly the second best in the world

@loku00 faster doesnt mean better, and btw, mike would bow to neil, hes probably one of his idols..
dolemitesdad 1 year ago
Both are great, but never forget that Peart is "the professor." His drumming is much cleaner, more precise. Portnoy tries to throw TOO MUCH into his drumming and it makes it muddled. But, they're both great, but there'd be no Portnoy without Peart paving the way.
Broon743 1 year ago
why compare?
senecadawg2 1 year ago
@senecadawg2 now thats the smartest comment I have read. they are both on a level few drummers reach in a life time. better? who cares. they are both Great.
Life long Rush fan.
gotmonkeyfinger 1 year ago
better does not exist in many cases. if you compare one of thease guys to Ringo or anyone like that, then you can. Bothe mike and neil are a level of ability that are in a simular level. yes Neil has been a major influence for mike but mike can accually play. Neil has influenced millions of drummers including me, but I cant do what they do. give it up for my two idols.

mike sounds like shit..

niel peart in my opinion totally sucks compared to mike...no comparison
shorttyjones 1 year ago
Portnoy never seemed like much of a soloist to me. He does so much during a normal DT song that his solos don't sound any different. Neil Peart on the otherhand has solos that he has composed and developed.
Now, honestly, to me Mike Portnoy plays more difficult material more often than Peart does. But that's not to say Peart can't wail himself. This just comes down to the difference between Rush and Dream Theater. Both are brilliant musicians.

neil peart for sure, more precise and fluid.
dropehe 1 year ago 23
@dropehe nah, the Portnoy solo does not do Mike justice at all. Don't base your decision off of just this video, like most people are. Both great, it's a matter of opinion, I'm sure if you asked Niel he would tell you Mike is absolutely amazing.

I LOVE both, Niel is the Father, Mike is the son. thats the way I see it. Mike has some things that Niel just dosnt go to, like a tone of double bass, Mike just goes nuts with it while Niel stays away from it and does his thing. I would love to see a tour of both bands and have them play eachother songs. Niel Must be proud to have such a great fan.
gotmonkeyfinger 1 year ago
I think in this case I'm on the fence.
Igor2242 1 year ago
I think that a drummer is better playing by himself on his own time alone, than with a band,or in a solo when they are expected to do good. That said,I believe that mike and neil are equal...Neil is older and somewhat more experience, but mike has youth and pwer in his playing.
slipknotmeep 1 year ago
you can't compare them, seeing how heavily Portnoy's influenced by Neil. you can find sooo many Neil'isms in Portnoys drumming, i bet if you told Portnoy hes better than Neil he'd slap you lol
