I loved this Sitcom. Too bad it didn't last. I like the fact that that Butch was a butch gay person. A " Bear " to some of us. Would be nice to see it come back either in re runs or all new shows. Slow down the pace and stop yelling the jokes.
John Goodman always was and always will be one of the most beautiful men on this planet, and the fact that he had the guts to play a "normal" man, who happened to be gay, when he himself is straight and married means so much to me!! Thanks for posting this, btw. It was a great, but short lived show.
Well said. There seems to be a general consensus in the media that all gay men must be wealthy, camp and hopelessly superficial. Being gay, in the eyes of the media, has much to do with conspicuous consumerism and an obsession with "celebrity" culture.
The notion of being both gay and working class seems almost impossible for the media to accept.
True it's not many, but it's not necessarily their sexual preference that's stopping them. If I'm not mistaken, Sir Ian McKellen has won twice, Sir John Gielgud has won a few times, and the late Sir Alec Guinness has too. Yep, Ben Kenobi was a notorious tearoom fiend :) Now, American gay actors have been consipcuous by their absence, But that's not to say it won't happen.
There are quite a few others, like Sir Ian McKellen, Ellen Degeneres, her wife Portia DiRossi, Bill Brochtrup (Gay John from "NYPD Blue"0, John Mahoney and Dan Butler ("Frasier"), and many others.
But more importantly, why is it that *anyone's* bedroom politics are any of anyone's business anyways? What we choose to do in the confines of our own bedrooms with whoever we choose is nobody's damn business. We need to jettison this identity politics crap and get over ourselves.
Yep, for several years now. Him, Dan Butler and David Hyde-Pierce, although nobody would know because they obviously don't feel the need to throw it in people's faces.
how do u kno all this? because... u really did your homework on this show. but do u have a whole episode? if so upload it on youtube because i and i think all of us would like to see all the episodes again. i can remember 1 episode when john goodman tricked his father and were at a gay bar. and what that man said when he found out... where he was at was hillarious.
I'll have to take a look, but I might have erased it. Not cool. i wasn't very impressed with the show that remained after all the controversy. But at least it gave us a "regular" guy that happened to be gay. The only other time I've seen it was when Abe Benrubi did it on "Wings." (BTW, he was Jerry on "ER.")
ISN'T it refreshing when gay men are actually represented to look like average, real people. Happens so infrequently. Unfortunately Abe's character on "Wings" was so seldom shown. I was never a big fan of the writing on "Normal, Ohio" but loved the casting of John as lead.
Not true. Nathan Lane's career hasn't suffered for being out.
And for the record, "Normal, Ohio" was cancelled was partly cancelled because John Goodman was not into the project at all. He all but sabotaged it, but if it had gone on much longer, Dan Aykroyd would have shown up as a potential love interest.
i have had the john goodman dream twice. it was great.

@cubsodaclassic It actually had 13 episodes, but only 7 aired. Even if they just showed reruns and the unaired episodes that'd be nice.

John Mahoney? The dad from "Frasier"? Are you sure? Don't you mean David Hyde Pierce, who played Niles?
Kingelessar1 2 years ago
Both, actually. John's been out for years.
