Superb musianship, but what could one do to it? can't dance to it, can't hum it, can't sing it, in fact if you study it carefully, it is musicians playing for themselves, a bit like people who like hearing the sound of their own voices, no wonder it didn't have the same appeal of swing.
conte an miles were different types of players.both at the top.love em both.wat a great group this is.fabolous players all of them.just goes to show the west could bop as hard as the east.many thanks.
I'm damned if I respect anyone's opinion who's going to use the "n" word to describe a jazz musician. Also note the ignorance of saying that Candoli was around before anyone had heard of Miles. By the time Conte joined Woody Herman, Miles was playing with the greatest names in jazz, and was making records with Charlie Parker while Conte was still laboring in obscurity. In any case, he probably would be embarrassed at claims that he was great than Miles, and would be horrified at the racism.
Shelly was the drummer on John Williams' Checkmate soundtrack album. Shelly was the "Manne!" His soloing was superbly musical and of course, he could swing the hump off a camel'x back!
This is a double Jazz Scene USA set DVD, presented by Oscaar Brown. I love it and long have it. Features Manne's Quintet and Shorty Rogers'. The latter gropu features a terrific Gary Peacock at the double bass, a few months before joining Albert Ayler (he was then playing great with Bud Shank's group too).
@53160 Miles Davis? This guy was playing his own style before Davis was heard of. The song is sort of based on SO WHAT, but Davis could only hope to play half as goo as Conte. No sour notes here.
@MarkR1957 Man, you have got the right to express your feeling and I respect it. But there is a big difference between great musician and great musical artist. I love Conte's playing but he has not changed music. Miles yes.
I just wish we had cats like these around today that can play to this level and unity, If i saw something like this live, I think it would take me a few days to sober up!!! ricardo gazzini
Thanks for your reply. I just received my copies in the mail of 2 cds for a great price, the Checkmate soundtrack and Rhythm in Motion, both by John "Johnny' Williams. Before he became the esteemed film composer he is today, he could crank out some great big band charts!
Marvelous! A great assemblage of artists. Another piece from the Checkmate soundtrack. Shelly played on the soundtrack composed by John, then "Johnny" Williams. Swinging "crime" jazz at its best!
What cookin' band! Shelly Manne and His Men were fantastic. This was Manne's best band: Richie Kamuca on tenor saxophone, Conte Candoli on trumpet, Russ Freeman on piano, not sure who the bassist is, because Monty Budwig usually played with Manne around this time.

What huge hands. No wonder he can hit that damn drum so well. Ha, ha. He and Philly Joe must be the most musical of kickin' drummers ever.

@acfinney Well, I disagree ^^

@acfinney Conte was a MONSTER player.
Great is small bands, a great section player with all the great big bands.
He had a really warm, full sound, great ideas, and his playing with the Harmon mute was every bit as good as Miles'.
All in all, Conte was a much better player, but, Miles got all the press.
Great to see Conte here. Nothing beats B & W Jazz videos from the 50' & 60's ~

Absolutely!!
I of course have the Shelly Manne "Checkmate" album, and it's my favorite small group recording.
I also have the "Johnny" Williams Big Band album of all the great Checkmate charts.
Absolutely Superb Music.
