  • OMG at seeing parallax scrolling on a c64

  • You like parallax scrolling? Check out 'C64 Enforcer II level 2' search on youtube....make sure you don't fall off your chair though dude :)

  • thanks for the quick response. my 5 cents: Turrican was/is the cats pyjamas (and midnight resistance). Had a speccy also still play CHAOS! on that =D

  • Nice to take a look into the world of the C64, which I have little to none experience with

    Really impressive stuff!

  • hey jesus i know this is off-topic but what was the name of that second tune on the vid? brought back a few good memories.

  • It's papia New Guinea

  • It's cool that you included St. Dragon:) What's the game at 03:11 - I'd love to play it again but forgot the title (it was about this ninja wit the chain-hook-bionic commando-like thing, right?)

  • Woops! I actually made a list of games used in this vid ages ago but I forgot to link to it in the info box :S

  • The C64 had so many gems.

Could you tell me the names of these game?

    platformer at 2:29

    side shooter 3:01

    puzzler 3:43

    tank shooter 4:06

    Cheers.

  • The side shooter was 'armalyte' arguably one of the c64's best. I dunno bout the others though

  • Thanks.

  • Hi Laoch. The platformer is Rolling Ronny.

Wish I could remember the name of that tank game. It looks strangely familiar.

  • Thank you. I definitely played that tank game before. The name totally eludes me though.

  • Some fine looking games there! The C64 truly was a powerful machine. My jaw hit the floor with some of the clips, (the creatures boss for example) Nice choice of Papa new guinae too.

  • Thanks, you've no idea how long (probably years) I've been trying to remember what the name of the game at 4:36 was (Hawkeye).

Didn't realise it was published by Thalamus ... I thought I knew all their games (thanks to Apex and the Rowlands brothers).

  • First game is one of my all time faves, creatures! Doesnt seem to be that well known but for me was one of the best.

Nice vid. My only problem is that i feel the audio for the second half doesnt really fit (thats just my opinion). I like the music for the first half though.

  • I think the 2nd song takes a while to get going, but the main problem was that I needed a song that was 6 minutes odd long to fit the video, I think it does a good job personally, maybe not perfect but still good, for me the first song gives a lot of energy to the vid but the 2nd is more nostalgic.

  • What was the name of the game?

  • name of the game is "Creatures". I recommend it!

  • While the C64 was in fact the best 8 bit computer of the history, it simply can't compare with the NES (graphics and game library) or SMS (only graphics) imo...

  • The C64 game library of over 4000 titles completely dwarfs the NES game library of around 1000 (Japan only, it was more like 600 in the US and substantially fewer in Europe)

The NES library only really wins out specifically in the number and quality of it's platform games and jrpg's (a genre the C64 was very lacking in)

  • Also the NES is not all-around superior technically either, whilst beating out the C64 in many areas, the C64 still had a superior sound chip, and from what i've heard sprite capabilities, compare the whale from Rodland (00:22) or the giant flying boss from Creatures 2 (02:53) to the Dragon towards the end of Mega Man 2 which causes the NES to slow down and flicker on a massive scale even with nothing but a black background (that boss fight still manages to rock hard though)

  • Yes. Soundwise the C64 is superior to any 8 bit machine. But the rest not. The games on the NES (and SMS)are much faster overall. They are more akin to a early arcade machine. Something made for fast paced games versus something adapted for it. The difference the Mega Drive has for the Amiga in terms of capability for fast games is the same the NES and SMS have for the C64 imo.

But this is for action games. Genres like adventure are better suited for the Amiga and C64 respectivelly.

  • @ slkforever

Don't be misled by the low framerate of YT vids. The vast majority of c64 games run at 50fps for PAL, 60fps for NTSC, same as NES and SMS.

The NES does have several advantages, such as its hardware-based sprite multiplexer, yet it isstill limited to a max of 8 sprites per horizontal line, while its sprites are only one third the width of c64 ones.

This is the main reason for sprite flicker in NES games and why big bosses are often built out of background tiles on a black screen.

  • I was speaking about quality not quantity. While a massive number of C64 games was made by programmers in their bedroom (or close to it), the games for consoles generally were made by big teams (mainly the japanese ones). And let's not forget the fact that ALL games for the NES had to get a certificate of quality from Nintendo itlself (I think the only exception was Tengen). This guarantees more professionalism from the developers and publishers alike.

  • Putting it into that perspective, the NES was for the masses whilst the C64 was for the Creative minded because it was a machine that allowed to them to explore their imagination not only through games but as you said "bedroom coders" through their own expression. Nintendo might have been behind a game guarantee but the C64 was the ultimate machine in most areas as was the Amiga. But you are arguing more the point of games and not that of an all rounder. Sorry for going off topic.

  • You say "the rest not" in too much of a broard way, what has the speed of a consoles games got to do with it's sprite capabilities? in my experience anything on NES with loads of sprites onscreen has masses of flicker to the extent not commonly seen on the C64. The C64 was originally designed to be a games machine but was later changed to be a home computer so it was not adapted to play arcade style games at all it was designed with them in mind from the beginning.

  • No, I don't forget Nintendo's illegal business practices and "Seal of Quality" which was pretty much the reason why 70% of it's games library was platform games, if you limit the number of games a company can release every year you're basically forcing it to put all it's eggs in one basket, the most popular game genre for the time was platformer, so that was also the least risky business proposition, also I might add it didn't seem to stop terrible games from appearing on the console anyway.

  • And mate i MUST ask you what the game at 4:05 is?? I remember this game so well and i used to love it to bits back in the 80's but i can't for the life of me remember what it is called!?!?.. is it "Tank Attack"?

I just want to say too that your video is THE BEST C64 Compilation i have seen on YouTube thus far! ... Thank You for giving me such an awesome trip back to my youth :)

  • In your first post to slkforever you responded to me instead mate :) But agree with everything you are saying anyway, especially on the "Seal of Quality" statement. Systems like the C64 and Amiga knew pretty no boundaries when it came to game development unlike the regulatory practices of Nintendo. Where else but on the C64 could you find such innovative titles such as Sentinel, Driller, Captain Blood, Battletech, The Last Ninja, but also have the broad appeal of platformers and shootem-ups!?

  • Thanks for the kind words. The game at 4:05 is Anarchy. Also :) I'm going to revise your statement to "where else could you find such innovative titles with pretty good graphics" as you could find loads of innovative and original games on the Spectrum, many of which were exclusive (as were many greats for the C64), you did however have to put up with colour clash or monochrome graphics with the Speccy.

  • That was it!!! .. Anarchy :) Where did i get Tank Attack from? .. And mate, revise to your hearts content because i completely agree with what you are saying. The Speccy & C64 were both rivals of each other as you would well know (nothing better than reading ACE magazine back in the day), so my statement was not solely leveled at the C64 but more anything with a keyboard that was either from Commodore, Sinclair, Amstrad, Acorn.. etc.. The days of innovation :)

  • Extremely good video with great music!Well done! Is there amiga 100games video?

  • Damn I need more C64 games! Added to favorites!
