I'm gonna take a shot in the dark with this question. You seem to have worked on a fair share of GM based trucks. I'm planning on swapping a 98 5.7 into my Jeep Cherokee soon. Do you know if the accessory brackets/ intake sit high like on the 5.3 vortec engines?
@briansmobile1 -- hi i need advice on my 95 blazer with vortech. if i run 98 octane i seems to run a little better but 87 it runs rough. either octane it takes about 30 seconds or so to start if it sits overnight it turns over right away but other wise i gotta let it spin the starter for a bit to get it running. almost like at times it is not getting fuel. my code reader only tells me random missfire. have you run into this issue and what should i look into first?
also i cut the led light in dash to use as test light then it started the ten feet then diing probly coincidence i also gave the gas tank a good slap at that same time so fuel pump? it pumps when in on position but sounds airish there is gas i here it splash around when shaking truck
my s10 99 4.3 x vin ran well till warm then would sputter and die if floored it would pop and back fire from intake and die id restart right awy and it would run great again for 30 min then start over i filled with super and some injector cleaner it ran 3/4 better for about 3 weeks and then started getting a hole lot worse no it starts goes ten feet and dies any ideas?
I have to tell you that I was looking for a video like this for about 3 week. Thank you so much for doing all this to help people like me.
Now I have to ask you. I have a Chevy Blazer 2002 and I was driving on a free way while it stop. I try to start it for over 3 hrs and nothing. I heart it could be the fuel pump but it sound perfect each time I try to start it. About 6 months it was showing me a check eng and the code was refering to O2 bank 2 now the light is gone. Any suggest?
@juwealce Another thing to look for is the ignition switch... they are known to fail and are problematic on Chevy trucks, but it's one of the last places people look. I think that ignition controls 6 or 8 components (based on the wiring harness)... after time, the components wear and you will get no fire or sometimes no fire or fuel. One way to test it is to go back and forth on and off to like 10-15 times, and if it catches, it will start. I see this a lot!
@briansmobile1 my 1995 blazer 4.3 vortec i have had it since 95 and im just now going to change the spider injectors because its missing to beat hell and running bad i have changed everything besides this but onther then this its been a awesome blazer cant go wrong with it love it take care
........p.s did it run bad befor you changed and how does it run now
@briansmobile1 They're a bugger! I haven't seen them leak- the lines themselves are quite tough. Naturally you want them to be clear of possible abrasions, but you're probably going to be OK. Also the new updated bracket is about half the size of the new one. This could help. I haven't seen what you're working with, but you might want to check with your local dealership's parts dept and look at the new one. That may be your hang up.
Great video! we own a 2001 Jimmy , since 2005. I imagine the truck still has its original injector system in it. Other than some starting problems(low fuel pressure), the truck runs
reasonably well. What warning signs should I look out for when the injectors begin to fail?
my 1997 suburban spider injectors have worked great and they have 255,000 miles on them!!! im rebuilding the engine now and will probably do the upgrade after reading up it and watching this video
@TheFattracker You may not need to cut anything depending on your model. Bring your old one to the dealer when you get your new injector. Compare it to the updated one and you'll see if it's necessary.
I really appreciate the vids. Troubleshooting P300 's now on 98 K1500. I'll get there, it's a learning experience. Good thing it's not my daily driver :) The videos are really helping.
@KickinBlazer GREAT QUESTION ALERT! because it's inside the manifold it doesn't need a hose. It's already surrounded in vacuum. Direct answer to your question: No. No hose required.
hey brian sorry to bother u again. i noticed on autozone. they have the conversion injector kit which is a mfi instead of a scpi which is stock on my tahoe. do i have to change anything or get a wiring harness if i change it over to the mfi injection. Thanks
Hey man, would you know if changing the spider injector on a 97 GMC Sonoma 4.3 would be about the same? I just changed my fuel pump do to sputtering while driving. It still sputters. Do you think this could be the problem?
hey brian i just bought a 1999 tahoe 5.7 vortec. the guy that had it before me was runnin 6 and 8 sparkplug wire backwards for a while. he couldnt fix it so i bought it. i fixed that probl. im gettin like 9 miles to the gallon. and noticed some gas in the oil. the check engine light is on with the code p1074. the 6 and 8 plug is completey wet. i have new plugs, wires and distributor and cap. what else could it before i start to spend alot of money.
@sdavis3231 You forgot to say that your oil level is too high and rising. (Check it) Your injector lines are likely leaking on #'s 6 & 8. Probably some one replaced it and split the lines trying to get it to lay down under the manifold (new ones are TOUGH to get to submit for re assembly.
@briansmobile1 hey, i asked them they never replaced the injectors nor the lines for them. they just said it started running like shit so they changed the plugs and wires, and they didnt ever check the firing order for it. i was told it might be the intakae manifold gasket. if u got some more info let me know please. thanks alot brian.
@sdavis3231 The only way to have gas get into the oil is under the intake manifold. If it were my truck I'd pull the upper manifold and turn the key to run without starting it and see what it did. If all was OK I'd pull the lower manifold and replace the gasket.
Hi Brian. Great vid. I wanted to know what the secret is to get the #2 plug out it is right behing the steering shaft. What tool do you use..Thanks Steve
hey Brian, i have a '97 gmc sierra with spider injection. I'm getting the code p0306 i already checked distributor cap, plugs and wires. plug # is always getting the worst end of it. I'm thinking its the injector or fuel regulator, should i just get the new injector since it comes with the regulator?
@tikki713 It's up to you. If you have to have it be reliable and have emissions testing where you're at where your catalytic converter must work then yes for sure.
@briansmobile1 Hey Brian i'm having a problem with my 2002 chevy blazer, the problem is that every time that i'm going to turn it on it takes like about 4 turns of the key switch in order to turn on,the fuel pump is working ,the relay is also working, what can be the problem ?.
@briansmobile1 Hey man, would you know if changing the spider injector on a 97 GMC Sonoma 4.3 would be about the same? I just changed my fuel pump do to sputtering while driving. It still sputters. Do you think this could be the problem?
They have this part at amazon for $189 much cheaper then the parts store. It is a OE part. Search Delphi FJ10565 Fuel Injector in amazon and you will find it.
@mrkevinmjr It's worth it to buy from the dealer to get the updated one. As a local shop/friend if you can buy it "cash" on their account. This can save you $100.00
I just want to update you on my spider replacement. The removal was more difficult than the install but not real bad. Finished putting the new one in started the truck and it didn't fix the problem. Still had P0300 error. Worked with my mechanic and he figured it out to be the distributor is broken. more plastic crap. The cap was plastic zip tied in place and it moved. long story short it now runs like a champ. I still need to replace the dist. but that is another day. Oh compr. 140psi. 226000mi
I need help.. trying to get to the fuel regulator on a 5.7 Chevy 2500 , and the spider is stuck to the intake , I can't get it turn lose to get the air intake off. any help?
@43coolhand Make sure you've removed the retaining triangle thing from the fuel lines and unplug the electrical connector. Next use windex or spray silicone to lube the plug o-ring if needed then wiggle the manifold up off the injector plug. You may need to unbolt the AC compressor and lean it forward to get the last manifold bolt.
plastic intake??? junk. seems like newer GM engines have allot of things that intentionally make them failure prone. the 3800 v6 went to a plastic intake setup, the older aluminum design was much better. the newer 3800 is prone to intake failures which was unheard of on older 3.8L v6's. when the plastic intake fails on a series II 3800 it usually causes a hydrolock condition which can damage the engine. common GM you know better
@ad356 Our kids aren't going to be restoring these cars are they? They just aren't made of good materials that you could possibly work with. Do you know what happens on the rare occasion that you have a back fire on these plastic manifolds? I had a Taurus IM go shrapnel on me one time that had an inertia switch reset done. BOOM!
yes i was wanting to know if all spyder injectors are made like the one in your video? with the fuel regulator?? bc i got to replace my regulator.... and if so do the end of the spyder thing which i assume there the injector??? are they assigned to certain holes in the intake? sort of like the plugs into a cap??? thanks for any advice
@dude81869 The regulator is on the end of the unit. It doesn't need a vacuum hose because inside the manifold it gets vacuum directly. GREAT QUESTION!
@lightspeed63 To be good at anything you have to either put your hours in and wade through frustrations of exhaustive discovery in the form of failures and study, OR learn from some one who knows. I enjoy helping people advance their skill as much I as enjoy advancing my own. The karma is awesome!
update: after we really checked out the miss we had 1 of the new plugs we put in was cracked BUT we will replace the spider soon because you made it so ez to understand
I have a 2004 chevy single cab v6 4.3. im getting code p0200 injector circuit open and another code saying number three is missing. it ideals almost fine you can barely tell its missing but when it gets under load it bogs down and i can barly get it to excel at all? have any idea what the Injector circuit open could possibly mean? im have the worst trouble trying to figure out what it is without just starting to drop time and money on replaceing random fuel injector componints thanx a bunch
@briansmobile1 is the only way to test the plug is to use a voltage meter or is there a simpler way? and when you say egr do you mean the valve and also how to test that and blocked exhaust? sry for so many questions but im fairly new at mechanics and really dont have the money to take it to the shop.
@Thenukeinabottle If you unbolt the exhaust before the cat and muffler you can alienate your neighbors AND see if it has more power. To check the plug I'd just unplug, inspect for corrosion/bent pins etc and securely plug it back in. You can pull the EGR valve off and check if it's stuck open.
@briansmobile1 thanx a ton. the best advise ive gotten so far! your my hero ill do that tomorrow and report back. but i know the plug is fine itself (as far as corrosion and bent pins) i took it off yesterday and already changed distruputer cap, roder button, spark plugs and wires, and a fuel filter. (before i got the codes read).
@Thenukeinabottle After doing any service. Clear the codes and then run it to see what comes back. Some things may be ok from the repair you did.... with any luck.
AWESOME! Now I feel more confident about tackling this fix.
My van if flooding so I think my fuel pressure regulator is gone but I just wanted to see how hard it was to remove the plenum. Vans are a bit harder because of the pos of the engine inside. I will try the press first though.
I got the spider out, and the whole inside of the intake was covered with black crap. I don't see any broken lines and the nozzles look clear. My symptoms were rough idle, slight miss. I changed plugs/wires/cap/rotor/fuel filter/ checked fuel pressure, it was at 50 key on. I'd hate to drop the money for the spider and not have it fix the problem, any other ideas or suggestions of things to check first?
@csrichardson1 That carbon all over everything is common and can be the problem itself. The best way to clean it off is to use a special vacuum brush thingy, or use SeaFoam brand carb cleaner in liquid form and drizzle it in the brake vacuum hose while some one else holds the RPMs at about 2000. The injector is expensive, but they have been updated like five times. Buy one from the dealer if you can. Wholesale they're about the same as at Autozone. Ask a shop to use their account "cash".
Thanks for the video, i'm in the middle of pulling this out on a 97 Jimmy. Special thanks for the crows foot hint, that fuel line is a real pain. Hardest part of getting the upper off.
@onsiteautoservices Only so many hours in a day to work for free. I cop out with the old Chilton/Haynes "installation is the reverse of dis assembly. Enjoy the free info. I guess at least here you get MORE than you paid for. ; )
@janetwelty They are all in a line and go straight to the cylinder like spider legs straigh out with no legs crossing. Then you shove the body of the spider down and back a little. It's scary and you'll think you'll break or kink the lines, but then it barely works enough to get the upper manifold on. Some techs discard the metal bracket. I use them.
You showed the fuel pressure regulator on the MPI, but is it at the same place as the CPI? I'd hate to take off the manifold only to find that the regulator is in another place.
have replace a couple of these. never ever replaced the one on my old 97 4.3, left it alone when i did the intake gaskets. its still running and driving perfectly, sold it over a year ago.
I just want to thank you for your video on how to replace the spider injector on a 5.7 liter . It was a big help for me. Because of your video I was able to do it my self. P.S do you have a video of how to replace a tension pulley on a 2002 nissan altima. I need to replace it on my altima. Any help would be appreciated thank you.
pulled the plenum and the whole inside is covered with carbon, i mean so thick its falling back into the bottom of the pan, i guess this means there is a problem with the regulator or spider gasket. looks like ther has been a fire in there its so bad. best way to clean that out before repairing it?
@metropool That's actually pretty common once the injector or regulator, OR even a bad PCV valve. It's deposited by vapors that rise and accumulate there. To clean it, you pull the lower manifold and scrape the crud out and after assembly do a short run of 5 minutes at idle with motor flush and then change the oil and filter. THEN do a throttle body cleaning by pulling the vacuum line from the power brake booster and drizzle SeaFoam carb cleaner in it while running. Then clear codes.
I'm changing the notorious intake manifold gasket on my 2000 GMC yukon denali, 5.7R and I'm having problems with a hose that is connected on the lower half of the intake manifold. It's looks like metal piping, but then has wire meshing, and it's like a giant brake line fitting but with some type of locking mechanism. I tried squeezing it and turning it, but no luck. Any help would be appreciated thanks!
I have a 94 Chevy Blazer 4.3 with a bad oxygen sensor. When I checked my oil I noticed that there was to much oil so I drained some off while doing that I noticed I had gas in my oil. One tech told me it was due to the oxygen sensor & then another tech told me it was the spider injector. I'm just trying to figure out if theres a way to verify the problem before blowing a lot of money. So if you have some time & can give me a suggestion it would be very appreciated.
@shadowknight7769 Pull off the upper manifold. Turn the key on so the dash lights come on, watch gas pour out your fuel pressure regulator or injector lines. Yay. = (
Hi brian, nice video.I know its difficult but i wonder if you have any ideas.I have a chevy dayvan 4.3 v6 2000& it cut out & doesn't start.turns over fine, good spark at all plugs, changed fuel filter (was blocked),i have fuel up to the unions so my next job was to take this cover off & check this spider but a little unsure of what to look for.Do you know what signal readings i should be getting at the electrical plug to the spider so i could check that first before i dismantle it all, regards jason
@imprezayl04 It should be battery voltage. The best check is a noid light- if you don't have one you can use a 194 bulb with the contacts straightened straight down. The fuel pressure regulator is in there too. It often leaks, but you won't know it because it's covered by the upper manifold.
so im going to be replacing my fuel pressure regulator on my 99 5.7 tahoe 97,000 miles on it. i was wondering should i change the spider injectors to the new redesign and better off in the long run since im taking the manifold off.
this is really great...thank you. I just replaced the intake manifold gasket last Jan. with Fel-Pro - can I re-use when doing MPFI upgrade or do I need to replace? Thx.
I took mine apart to access the FPR and now putting it back together i don't know exactly what i'm doing. I'm studying to be a mechanic so i just learn as i go. but this would have been nice to come across before i took it apart, great job
what were the symptoms of this truck cause mine is haveing problems starting and the shop has changed like everything for the fuel and cant frind the problem.
can you make a video on the hoses by the brake booster that give the 4wd the vaccum it needs to engage the hoses on mine are all weird and dont seem to be in the right place because the the 4wd works when ever it feels like itand the problem are those hoses so if you could just show how those hoses are hooked up that would be a big help thanks
@meeko1589 In the mean time check the vacuum diagram on the bottom of your hood or one in the junk yard. I'll see what I can do, but it may be a while. Cheers!
@ckf777 The last one I did was $675 all said and done. But I'm usually half of what the dealer takes. You have the right to take your car back under your own terms. You own it, you bear the risk etc. You may owe them for diagnostics (about 90-$100), but you don't have to go with them if you don't want to once you've paid for diagnosis or whatever you contracted with them to do. Best of luck!
@briansmobile1 Thank you so much for responding, I really appreciate it! So, it's more than double your price-grrrr. I know they have over head but geeeezzzz. So that means the parts must be around $300.00 or so right? Wow, I don't know about them, seems pretty high to me! I figured they couldn't hold our truck hostage like that! Well, thanks for your help! We'll have to figure out what next,****sigh****
Hey Brian, awesome video! Very informative and super helpful-it seems. I wanted to ask you since you seem like a good source of info & we don't know much about automotive repairs: Our 2001 Chevy Silverado V6 2WD Single Cab has been smelling of gasoline in the cab and else where for a little while now. So, this morning it reeked inside the cab and I got worried so I took it into a local shop and they told me the same thing u said about these trucks had many problems with the spider injector.....
I just bought a crows foot set, cheap set but it's pretty solid in general. Great vid and great knowledge passed on as usual. I have been under a rock for a while, did you get a new camera?
I gotta try and catch up with my subs... got a million uploads to view.
Lol, the redesigned unit looks like the thing that blew out of the DeLorean in Back to the Future III when they tried to fuel the engine with whiskey. Do you have some special information source where you learn these juicy details about cars?
@asayle3r5 I network with some pretty candid & experienced car guru's. I've also done contract work with some people that contract with manufacturers to distribute information to the dealerships and generate expert witness material for lawsuits.
@briansmobile1 Wow, that's pretty cool. Keep up the good work. Have you ever looked at my car project on YouTube? Put down your beverage if you do, because you will most likely spew it everywhere laughing if you don't.
@asayle3r5 I did check that out- that's awesome! I'm a big proponent for having a big capable truck, a highway car that's efficient and a bike for good weather short trips. That car you're building fits that middle requirement perfect! They're fun to drive too cuz they're so easy to park and maneuver city traffic.

They have this part at amazon for $189 much cheaper then the parts store. It is a OE part. Search Delphi FJ10565 Fuel Injector in amazon and you will find it.

Great video! How you get the upper intake to seal around the spider injector? It now whistles why it works! Real bad vacuum leak.
Catchmeoffshore 5 months ago
@Catchmeoffshore Make sure the gasket is good and installed correctly. Also make sure your injector is in the the bracket in the middle.

Oh compr. 140psi. 226000mi

43coolhand 6 months ago

@taco11488 The new ones from the dealership parts department as of the time of this video came with the fuel pressure regulator.
briansmobile1 6 months ago
So what do you do with the pressure reg on the updated spider if there is no hose
dude81869 6 months ago
@dude81869 The regulator is on the end of the unit. It doesn't need a vacuum hose because inside the manifold it gets vacuum directly. GREAT QUESTION!

Thenukeinabottle 8 months ago
@Thenukeinabottle Could be the plug on top of the injector. Could also be an egr issue or blocked exhaust.
briansmobile1 8 months ago
@briansmobile1 is the only way to test the plug is to use a voltage meter or is there a simpler way? and when you say egr do you mean the valve and also how to test that and blocked exhaust? sry for so many questions but im fairly new at mechanics and really dont have the money to take it to the shop.
Thenukeinabottle 8 months ago
@Thenukeinabottle If you unbolt the exhaust before the cat and muffler you can alienate your neighbors AND see if it has more power. To check the plug I'd just unplug, inspect for corrosion/bent pins etc and securely plug it back in. You can pull the EGR valve off and check if it's stuck open.
briansmobile1 8 months ago
@briansmobile1 thanx a ton. the best advise ive gotten so far! your my hero ill do that tomorrow and report back. but i know the plug is fine itself (as far as corrosion and bent pins) i took it off yesterday and already changed distruputer cap, roder button, spark plugs and wires, and a fuel filter. (before i got the codes read).
Thenukeinabottle 8 months ago
@Thenukeinabottle After doing any service. Clear the codes and then run it to see what comes back. Some things may be ok from the repair you did.... with any luck.

I think my problem is low fuel pressure, I only have 52psi, from what I read you have to have at least 58.

@csrichardson1 58 runs smoother by a hair. 52 should run pretty decent.

I'd hate to drop the money for the spider and not have it fix the problem, any other ideas or suggestions of things to check first?
csrichardson1 10 months ago
@csrichardson1 That carbon all over everything is common and can be the problem itself. The best way to clean it off is to use a special vacuum brush thingy, or use SeaFoam brand carb cleaner in liquid form and drizzle it in the brake vacuum hose while some one else holds the RPMs at about 2000. The injector is expensive, but they have been updated like five times. Buy one from the dealer if you can. Wholesale they're about the same as at Autozone. Ask a shop to use their account "cash".

how do you know where each nozzle from the spider goes on a 1996 chevy 350ci
janetwelty 10 months ago
@janetwelty They are all in a line and go straight to the cylinder like spider legs straigh out with no legs crossing. Then you shove the body of the spider down and back a little. It's scary and you'll think you'll break or kink the lines, but then it barely works enough to get the upper manifold on. Some techs discard the metal bracket. I use them.
briansmobile1 10 months ago
You showed the fuel pressure regulator on the MPI, but is it at the same place as the CPI? I'd hate to take off the manifold only to find that the regulator is in another place.

@chriselliswest I recommend focusing on what you love. And then take off the manifold to get to it.

pulled the plenum and the whole inside is covered with carbon, i mean so thick its falling back into the bottom of the pan, i guess this means there is a problem with the regulator or spider gasket. looks like ther has been a fire in there its so bad. best way to clean that out before repairing it?
metropool 1 year ago
@metropool That's actually pretty common once the injector or regulator, OR even a bad PCV valve. It's deposited by vapors that rise and accumulate there. To clean it, you pull the lower manifold and scrape the crud out and after assembly do a short run of 5 minutes at idle with motor flush and then change the oil and filter. THEN do a throttle body cleaning by pulling the vacuum line from the power brake booster and drizzle SeaFoam carb cleaner in it while running. Then clear codes.
briansmobile1 1 year ago
@briansmobile1 what kind of problems will I encounter if this crud gets into the injector holes prior to hooking them up?
metropool 1 year ago
@metropool Worst case scenario is intake valves not seating all the way for a while creating a temporary misfire.

I'm changing the notorious intake manifold gasket on my 2000 GMC yukon denali, 5.7R and I'm having problems with a hose that is connected on the lower half of the intake manifold. So if you have some time & can give me a suggestion it would be very appreciated.
shadowknight7769 1 year ago
@shadowknight7769 Pull off the upper manifold. Turn the key on so the dash lights come on, watch gas pour out your fuel pressure regulator or injector lines. Yay. = (

Hi brian, nice video.I know its difficult but i wonder if you have any ideas.I have a chevy dayvan 4.3 v6 2000& it cut out & doesn't start.turns over fine, good spark at all plugs, changed fuel filter (was blocked),i have fuel up to the unions so my next job was to take this cover off & check this spider but a little unsure of what to look for.Do you know what signal readings i should be getting at the electrical plug to the spider so i could check that first before i dismantle it all, regards jason
imprezayl04 1 year ago
@imprezayl04 It should be battery voltage. The best check is a noid light- if you don't have one you can use a 194 bulb with the contacts straightened straight down. The fuel pressure regulator is in there too. It often leaks, but you won't know it because it's covered by the upper manifold.
briansmobile1 1 year ago
so im going to be replacing my fuel pressure regulator on my 99 5.7 tahoe 97,000 miles on it. i was wondering should i change the spider injectors to the new redesign and better off in the long run since im taking the manifold off.

Does that sound reasonable or are we getting ripped off!? That's a lot of $ & we can't afford that?
Plus, he said he will not release our truck to us to drive home-we must get it towed cuz it's dangerous!
We don't know what to do & are wondering if that price is CRAZY! It does look like a lot of work but $1,645.00?
If you could give us your opinion on this we would greatly appreciate it-since we have no one to ask really for a second opinion!
Thanks so much! Much love ~Christina

Best of luck!
briansmobile1 1 year ago
@briansmobile1 Thank you so much for responding, I really appreciate it! So, it's more than double your price-grrrr. I know they have over head but geeeezzzz. So that means the parts must be around $300.00 or so right? Wow, I don't know about them, seems pretty high to me! I figured they couldn't hold our truck hostage like that! Well, thanks for your help! We'll have to figure out what next,****sigh****

and that they came out with these spider injector kits to fix the problem. So, long story sorta short :) he said they would have to:
Install new spider injector kit
New fuel filter
Oil change cuz of debris falling in
Labor will take all day cuz they have to remove the intake (like you said)
and the grand total with parts and labor will be:
$1,645.00
