I found that if you use a little piece of electrical tape on the end of your screwdriver between the bit and the screw it will hold the screw in place (like a magnetic driver would) to make it easier to line the screw up. No more dropped screws.

Thanks for this post! I was able to repair my 8 year old Grandson's Xbox. By the way, the screw driver to remove screws is a Torx 15. And a jeweller's Phillips to remove the 2 inner screws.

Who would have thought to look under the rubber feet for screws?? Also I used a flat screwdriver to pry up the rubber feet .

it would be best just to use water instead of alcohol (put some on a sheet of glass and let it dry, see all that scum that was left behind?)

The laser in my xbox burnt out, it would not read disks, then i did the pot trick and it worked, the it stopped reading disks again, and i did the pot again, Now after alot of pot tweaks the laser finally burnt out, it will come on then go very dim, and it wont read disks, Where could i get a new disk drive or laser for a Philips version 2 drive, and help is appreciated.

my tray disk wont even open at times, could that be the reason?

@WALI504 the problem that you have is that there could be some gunk that is on the gear of the disk tray and some times it has problems opening so take some Q tips and rubbing alcohol dab the Q tips in the rubbing alcohol use a little bit though. and there should be 2 openings behind the disk tray using the Q tips stick them in those 2 areas and move them up and down until both gears are clean after that the disk tray should open fine.

probably yes some times contaminants can get on the disk tray and make marks or scratches.

yeah, this would about do the same thing the guy in the video does.

But AFAIK you really have to take apart the DVD drive, especially the laser unit, to completely clean your drive. But I don't know how to do that right now.

It could be the metal plated that's on top of the disk drive could be the one that's rubbing with the the disk. turn off the x box Remove the metal plate put the game disk in BUT BE CARE FULL OF THE LASER BEAM don't get it in your eyes and then tell me if it still makes the grinding noise.

Well the only thing that's going to keep the disk in its place is the metal plate that goes on top of the disk drive.

My brother had a problem with his x box on reading discs. He would play a game and it would lock up( this happens to all of the games) then he would reset it and it would say its unable to read. I took it apart and cleaned the laser. It worked for a little bit then the error came again. Could this be something with the hard drive or a bad laser? Thanks

It could be a Laser issue or that the x box is not in a cool place or that there's a lot of dust and its blocking all the the heat sinks and fans.
