You know, given the examples, maybe we should realize there's a difference between gonzo playing, for its own sake, and playing in service of the song? I wouldn't call Ringo Starr a great drummer, but he knew how to support Lennon and McCartney's songs.

Could u believe one of the guys who said that actually works in the drum department. lol how ignorant is he....idiot!
@bandit48032 why is he an idiot exactly? because his opinion doesnt concur with yours? everyone has different likes and dislikes. maybe hes an idiot because he compares a whole bunch of drummers that play completely differently? or maybe its because he wastes valuable time debating on who the best drummer is? if you like a particular drummer, great. that doesnt give you the right to shoot down everyone elses opinion about which drummer they like.
@soundmind529 He's an idiot because Peart flat out doesn't have the skill/talent that Steve Smith or Buddy Rich have in either of their pinky fingers. Someone might enjoy Pearts drumming because it fits the music he's playing no doubt...but flat out "Smith or Rich couldn't hold a candle to Peart" Seriously? Get real!
@bandit48032 okay, dude. calm down. my point was maybe the best solution is not wasting your time comparing drummers in such a way. i dont care for ANY of those drummers. Peart and Smith are okay, and Buddy was a great drummer during his time. Over the years, there have been far more gifted drummers that have taken the craft above and beyond what any of those guys did. there is no comparison, because every drummer plays slightly different. its not a matter of skill, rather how its applied.
@soundmind529 You're right about Peart being "ok" Smith on the other hand is far better than an "ok" drummer. Smith's skill is virtually unmatched right now in the drummer world, and as far as application...yeah, he has that covered as well. You must be formulating your opinion on Smiths 1980's Journey drumming to make a statement like that. If you've seen any of his recent modern drummer performances or his DVD "Drumset Tech/ History of the U.S. Beat" you'd be singing a different tune for sure.
@bandit48032 no, wrong again. smith is okay, but there are far more interesting drummers out there. i am well informed and have watched over 200 drum dvds, including hudson music. if hes your favorite, great. i have found a whole bunch of drummers that i would rather watch, as i find him rather boring and a little too traditional. he has great technique, but there are just too many other great drummers out there to say he is "unmatched." i have to disagree there my friend.
@soundmind529 haha you are too funny. No one out there can match what Steve Smith accomplishes behind a drum set right now. Not even close....they can't touch his technique either. Watch the "No Jive" performance on drummerworld . com under the Steve Smith section and give me your "honest" opinion on if you think it's boring and uninteresting. It's a solo from 98 on the Salute to Buddy Rich dvd and he's even come miles ahead since that performance.
@bandit48032 drumming is a subjective ability. this means that certain people like and dont like certain drummers. steve smith is alright, but im sorry dude. you can say whatever you want until youre blue in the face and it still isnt going to convince me that other drummers cant "touch his technique." thats YOUR opinion. youre telling ME to watch his videos? i have formulated my opinion after seeing ALL of them. there are TONS of drummers that i think are much more talented. sorry.
@soundmind529 I can't argue with you anymore. Not only does Steve have amazing technique, but I've yet to come across another drummer that can physically do more than he can behind a kit. You obviously haven't seen ANY of his stuff for you to formulate those opinions because anyone that has any knowledge about drumming can plainly look at what he's doing behind a drumset and be truly floored.
@soundmind529 I see a lot of drummers out there that do really nice and creative things behind a drumset which is what you're talking about, but can be easily mimicked or copied. Steve Smith on the other hand is doing a lot of different things behind a kit that most drummers won't be able to physically achieve in two life times. You have to be a Travis Barker fan!
He had an orgasm from hearing Krupa & Rich jajaja. This clearly represents the youth version of "great drumming" and the old school perspective. @TheHawkdaddy They were always underrated lol.Look, metal is awesome...hell music is awesome.I am not going to be a hypocrit and tell you that I like pop music, like lady gaga, etc, etc, but if I am at a party, and they're playing it, I'll make the best of it.But if I am alone, I'll listen to rock, metal, or anything else I like. But I agree with you, this generation, is preety much different from the 70's, 80's or 90's generation.I have nothing against them though.I respect your opinion.Peace :)
@TheHawkdaddy Something told me you wouldn't be a jackass, and you would be reasonable...and you were. Thanks for that.Because of that, I don't need to make a smartass comeback lol.I don't like to be attacked, but I don't like to attack anyone too. You've just got my respect, a thumb up lol(even though I don't care about that :P) and my complete understanding you're a music "genious" ;).I totally agree with you by the way. They have to try to vary more their music taste.Ohh and Zappa?Damn right ;)
@TheHawkdaddy well i agree with you to some degree but for example the first drummer Gar Samuelson from Megadeth was highly influenced by jazz also same for Chris Poland which made their first 2 albums kinda a jazz-metal album.
@TheHawkdaddy Although I agree jazz musicians are underrated, I don't think you can say all kids listen to is metal. As a 16 year old myself, I'm very into jazz, and classic rock.
THANK YOU MR FLAHERTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean I'm pretty amazed that Peart hasn't got bored of playing an accented single stroke roll and call that a solo. That's why people who get inspired by him, i.e. Portnoy, get so much attention, because they play loud, flashy stuff and wave their hands around like monkeys.
Neil pEE art does know how to drum/punch his way out of a bag...He ( In My HE art ) Is thee best Soul/ Rock / Tom Tom user there ever was...He at least uses His Drums for god sake....And Structures Rolls unlike no-one else....But I don't need to defend Him....The Bands 30 odd yrs of Music stands on it"s own....That after all ....is true success....
Someone already pointed out that Joe Flaherty is friends with Rush, so it's clearly just him talking shit for fun, but anyone who has seen Rush on their current tour knows that Jason Segel (the kid) not only does a huge Rush tribute in the new movie "I Love You, Man", but reprises his character in the video they show after each Rush show, so it's shit talk among pals all around. Good Times.
I took drum lessons for three years and can honestly say it was three years well spent. I've never failed to pass an audition or get a drumming gig in nearly 20 years now, and I have lessons to thank. No matter what instrument someone plays, it's been my experience that musicians who took lessons at some point are 99 times out of 100 better than those who have not. Anyone who believes that learning isn't necessary obviously needs to take a few lessons.
Lol, you guys are getting your panties in a twist over this? C'mon, it's just a video. If you have to question your faith in the respected drummers in this vido, you seriously need to get over it.
lol when i first saw this I had this feeling that mr. weir was gonna turn him on to gene krupa. my dad has been tellin me about gene krupa for years haha
@DeanIgnacio He didn't need them because, he was a freak of nature and he also grew up in an era where musicians where actually had to cultivate their talent to become famous. People TODAY probably need lessons to at least introduce them to good playing. You can only learn so much from famous rock guys who usually can only play their relatively easy gig and then chill with their money.
@releewasgay What the hell are you talking about? Never taking a lesson shouldn't be a source of pride. That's how you learn technique and develop a foundation on which to grow. And your analysis of today's musicians is just wrong. There are a lot of very talented musicians, especially drummers. Unfortunately there is always an element of luck involved so there will be guys playing on the street, in subway tunnels and local bars who are more talented than "famous" musicians but that's just life.
@bikinggreg You didn't read my post smart guy. I never said people don't need lessons. I said buddy r didn't need them. What top 100 song today can teach drummers about: improvisation, comping, independence, deep interdependence, different stickings, soloing the song form, syncopation, grooving while moving away from the backbeat, 3 pedals , beat superimposition, interdynamics, advanced high hat manipulation... a few to none. There are redeeming factors in modern music though.
Dude, name-dropping drum techniques doesn't give you lessons street cred, it just means you can use google like everyone else, mr. "deep interdependence". Sounds like a Kama Sutra technique to me.
But in all seriousness, let's face it, that clip kicks ass, and anyone who gets butt-hurt about the subtext of any of the dialog has no knowledge of A: Drumming and/or Drum Lessons, B: Pop Culture, in particular Canadian Pop Culture, or C: Music in general.
@spencerralphmeibos I'm not "name dropping". I'm making references of thing that I actually practiced. Neil Peart is awesome... but he is not a professional drummer by any stretch of the imagination. He's a rock drummer (ie: he doesn't really need to know shit outside of his rush gig). Watch him fuck up completely with the buddy rich big band. Yes the clip kicks ass. and.......
@releewasgay Saying NP isn't a professional drummer is simply not true, my friend. He is the definition of a pro drummer. He drums professionally. Regardless, I was not talking shit, just thought it amusing the way you "Name Dropped" all that drum lingo, and did, in fact, sound exactly like a "pedantic asshole". If I was mistaken, I apologize. Either way, NP and Rush FUCKING RULE!!!! SRM
P.S. Was Robert E. Lee really gay? That's awesome, if it's true.
@spencerralphmeibos Regardless of what me you or whoever wants to label the guy, the fact remains that NP is an awesome drummer and musician no doubt and Rush does fucking rule. Definately not tryin to be an a-hole but sometime these discussions can appear to devolve that way. Damn internet. Yeah general lee was gay. gays should totally be allowed to serve. the dude got to be a general! And your right, the guy in vid is totally that "nerdy" but hardcore dude from SLC punk. woulda never known
@spencerralphmeibos A. the drumkit was my college major, I'm not boasting about it, it's just the education path that i chose. B. Your right i don't know about Canada except anything the great norm macdonald has ever said. C. I was a music major. Don't be offended when someone gives an opinion and has data to back it up. Or as you call "name dropping". Not everyone who has a differing opinion than you is trying to be a pedantic asshole. Peart is great. if u love drums, explore whats beyondhim
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Neil Peart bores me to tears. The times that I have seen him he is nothing but a droid wearing a click track in the cans all night long.
For a real drummer try Elvin Jones, billy hart, Try Stuart Copeland, John Bonham.
Try somebody who doesn't need to wear a click track. It is f'in sterile. Oh and by the way I have listened to and played plenty of big band and can back it up. Neil Peart has never shown signs of swinging ... ever. He is a white boy from canada.
i'm not a big fan of neil peart. his drumming works great for rush, but as an overall drummer he's very sterile and i don't really like his touch. i find his solos corny and unimaginative, but that's just my personal opinion.
Indeed it's your personal opinion, but you should do your homework about what he's done for the music and drumming community. He's an inspiration for almost every drummer not only because he's versatile behind the drumset, but because his musical education is based on big bands, something kids simply haven't listen to it ever.
@tajto I totally agree with you man. There are no improvisational skills in his solos... they are boring, unimaginative and repetitive... he plays always the same stuff around his massive kit. He needs all those drums to add some variety. Have you seen here the video of his appearance in the Buddy Rich memorial? he plays the same shit with those cowbels that he always does... Peart uses the same patterns again and again. Totally sucks.
If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.
PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.

haha buddy rich is self taught to so he didnt take a lesson and that means NO one will every be able to imatate him the is the best there is was and every will be
And nobody will, mate. He's a role model and an inspiration for drummers like Peart, Steve Smith, Mat Sorum, Omar Hakim and plenty other great drummers.
funny line. but we all no that the Peart debate gets discussions moving! that is all it is... a fire statement so viewers can b/s like this. Krupa wasn't even that good (fact) he was a showman. Rich was amazing, however. the linear patterns didn't really change as he got older. Peart has pushed himself to learn all styles and techniques... he respects the other drummers. so give it up for the man. and stop buying into what some Producer put on a simple TV show.
you dotk know what are yoy doing Neil peart i the master of drums you cant talk like that about him neil peart is your ded, neil peart is your master all canada loves him an you cant anything like that about him so remove that video and excuse to me in my comentarien right now!!!
If you grew up in Canada you would realize this is all in fun taking the jabs at Neil.
Joe Flaherty performed in the Canadian comedy troupe SCTV, along with Geddy going to school at Fisherville/Newtonbrooke with Rick Moranis, and with Joe being Count Floyd as far back as Signals New World Tour
It is all in good fun, i love Rush as much as anyone but Buddy Rich was on a totally different plane than any drummer, past or present.
lol "i grew up with gene kupa and buddy rich" lol so did neal and he mentioned them in his idols. plus that guy is stupid neal peart's solos are jazzy like that, listen to neals R30 solo. it sounds really jazzy towards the end and neil at buddy rich's memorial concert neil does an amazing drum solo on a 5 piece kit. (for those who say he just has a big drum kit and a xylophone) watch that. but funny video lol
@VioletClub Another brilliant move by NBC to cancel one of the best shows ever made. Just look at the cast and look at where they all went and what they became. This show ruled. NBC fucked it to the ground like they do everything else.
If Rock was meant to be stiff and boring then Neil would be the best rock drummer ever. But it shouldn't be so yes, he does suck. He chould be playing in a military marching band or something.
You clearly know nothing. Anyone that says "Neil Peart sucks" is either trying to instigate or is just a moron.
I'm not going to call him the greatest drummer in the world, because he isn't -- far from it, in fact -- but he's my absolute favorite... For his creativity, his feel, and his approach; none of which are stiff or boring. Neil could play a wood block and it would be exciting to me.
For the record, I love Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Joe Flaherty. And this sketch is gold.
I think Neil Peart is one of the most influential, complicated, and prolific drummers of the last 30 years. He has an amazing sense of rhythm, and a hole bunch of different inspirational archeotypes, like Buddy Rich.
But no. You can't compare rock drummers with jazz drummers, even less if you are talking about the drummers who invented drumming as we all know it. It's like comparing Vangelis with Mozart.
obviously, your drumming IQ is @ houseplant level! Neil is one of the most fluid, technically sound players on the planet. And the best thing about him is his willingness to try new things & continuously improve. Hope you,re doing the same!
Neil is awesome, but awesome drumming didn't start in 1975 (with Fly By Night); it's been around for a long time and Neil had learned from the best (Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa among others). I'm certain Neil doesn't think he's "the best" (but I'm sure he thinks he's damn good).
Peart learned different sheet music to the song than the rest of the big band backing him. So when he went in he basically had to wing it. Considering that...it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
Try to imagine Buddy Rich playing Tom Sawyer.

@TheHawkdaddy well i agree with you to some degree but for example the first drummer Gar Samuelson from Megadeth was highly influenced by jazz also same for Chris Poland which made their first 2 albums kinda a jazz-metal album.

One more thing---
Someone already pointed out that Joe Flaherty is friends with Rush, so it's clearly just him talking shit for fun, but anyone who has seen Rush on their current tour knows that Jason Segel (the kid) not only does a huge Rush tribute in the new movie "I Love You, Man", but reprises his character in the video they show after each Rush show, so it's shit talk among pals all around.

DeanIgnacio 1 year ago 2
@DeanIgnacio He didn't need them because, he was a freak of nature and he also grew up in an era where musicians where actually had to cultivate their talent to become famous. People TODAY probably need lessons to at least introduce them to good playing. You can only learn so much from famous rock guys who usually can only play their relatively easy gig and then chill with their money.
releewasgay 1 year ago
@releewasgay What the hell are you talking about? Never taking a lesson shouldn't be a source of pride. That's how you learn technique and develop a foundation on which to grow. And your analysis of today's musicians is just wrong. There are a lot of very talented musicians, especially drummers. Unfortunately there is always an element of luck involved so there will be guys playing on the street, in subway tunnels and local bars who are more talented than "famous" musicians but that's just life.
bikinggreg 1 year ago
@bikinggreg You didn't read my post smart guy. I never said people don't need lessons. I said buddy r didn't need them. What top 100 song today can teach drummers about: improvisation, comping, independence, deep interdependence, different stickings, soloing the song form, syncopation, grooving while moving away from the backbeat, 3 pedals , beat superimposition, interdynamics, advanced high hat manipulation... a few to none. There are redeeming factors in modern music though.
releewasgay 1 year ago
@releewasgay
Dude, name-dropping drum techniques doesn't give you lessons street cred, it just means you can use google like everyone else, mr. "deep interdependence". Sounds like a Kama Sutra technique to me.
But in all seriousness, let's face it, that clip kicks ass, and anyone who gets butt-hurt about the subtext of any of the dialog has no knowledge of A: Drumming and/or Drum Lessons, B: Pop Culture, in particular Canadian Pop Culture, or C: Music in general.
spencerralphmeibos 1 year ago
@spencerralphmeibos I'm not "name dropping". I'm making references of thing that I actually practiced. Neil Peart is awesome... but he is not a professional drummer by any stretch of the imagination. He's a rock drummer (ie: he doesn't really need to know shit outside of his rush gig). Watch him fuck up completely with the buddy rich big band. Yes the clip kicks ass. and.......
releewasgay 1 year ago
@releewasgay Saying NP isn't a professional drummer is simply not true, my friend. He is the definition of a pro drummer. He drums professionally. Regardless, I was not talking shit, just thought it amusing the way you "Name Dropped" all that drum lingo, and did, in fact, sound exactly like a "pedantic asshole". If I was mistaken, I apologize. Either way, NP and Rush FUCKING RULE!!!! SRM
P.S. Was Robert E. Lee really gay? That's awesome, if it's true.
spencerralphmeibos 1 year ago
@spencerralphmeibos Regardless of what me you or whoever wants to label the guy, the fact remains that NP is an awesome drummer and musician no doubt and Rush does fucking rule. Definately not tryin to be an a-hole but sometime these discussions can appear to devolve that way. Damn internet. Yeah general lee was gay. gays should totally be allowed to serve. the dude got to be a general!
Neil Peart has never shown signs of swinging ... ever. He is a white boy from canada.

i'm not a big fan of neil peart. his drumming works great for rush, but as an overall drummer he's very sterile and i don't really like his touch. i find his solos corny and unimaginative, but that's just my personal opinion.
tajto 2 years ago
Indeed it's your personal opinion, but you should do your homework about what he's done for the music and drumming community. He's an inspiration for almost every drummer not only because he's versatile behind the drumset, but because his musical education is based on big bands, something kids simply haven't listen to it ever.

GrungeRocker1000 1 year ago
@tajto I totally agree with you man. There are no improvisational skills in his solos... they are boring, unimaginative and repetitive... he plays always the same stuff around his massive kit. He needs all those drums to add some variety. Have you seen here the video of his appearance in the Buddy Rich memorial? he plays the same shit with those cowbels that he always does... Peart uses the same patterns again and again. Totally sucks.

funny line. but we all no that the Peart debate gets discussions moving! that is all it is... a fire statement so viewers can b/s like this. Krupa wasn't even that good (fact) he was a showman. Rich was amazing, however. the linear patterns didn't really change as he got older. If Rock was meant to be stiff and boring then Neil would be the best rock drummer ever. But it shouldn't be so yes, he does suck. He chould be playing in a military marching band or something.
DrumMasterOchoCinco 2 years ago
You clearly know nothing. Anyone that says "Neil Peart sucks" is either trying to instigate or is just a moron.
I'm not going to call him the greatest drummer in the world, because he isn't -- far from it, in fact -- but he's my absolute favorite... For his creativity, his feel, and his approach; none of which are stiff or boring. Neil could play a wood block and it would be exciting to me.
For the record, I love Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Joe Flaherty. And this sketch is gold.

Cool upload :)

Rolling on the floor!!!
That was the WORST solo ever! Peart admitted in an interview he was so embarassed by that performance he drove back to Canda from NYC almost in tears.
Also his cover of 'cottontail' was LAUGHABLE. Peart cant swing a note - never could never will.
After time with Gruber, he went into the studio to record 'burning for buddy' to redeem himself.
37 takes later, he still cant swing 'cottontail'.
