And to think when they came out I blew them off as a "gimmick band." Then in the mid-80's I picked them back up and actually LISTENED and holy shit... the world just wasn't ready for them...
f**king brilliance. To my deathbed, will go down as one of my all time favorite bands.
i listening to devo when i was a kid still today i think they where the best i have listen to they where true punk being themselfs thats what punk is to be ones self love you devo
@WilbePat Devo belongs in the Rock Hall. I was a straight up hip hop Puerto Rican kid in 1980s NYC and they are what expanded my horizons to all kinds of rock music. Ive seen them twice in the past few years, and yea they put on a few pounds, like me, but their creativity and originality still sets them apart.
Same here bro, I was a hardcore funk music fanatic (seriously into George Clintion/P-Funk stuff), black kid from South Central (LA) in the late 70's. What got me into Devo was their monster smash 1980 hit of course was "Whip It." My high school football coach use to get us fired up to this song during practice, lol!! Yeah, I agree with you, Devo should get their long over do recognition into the Rock Hall Of Fame. This band was ahead of their time and underrated as well.
@WilbePat Devo are more than 'rock'music and should not be in the R&RHoF.Instead they should be in the Museum of Modern Art with Warhol and the pop-artists as Pop-Icons
@epsteinsmutha1 That's funny. However, I have long been Devo-tee dressed up as DEVO Halloween '81 at Hawken School, Gates Mills Ohio (Molly Shannon was there LOL)
@KingCastFranconia I'm confused. What does dressing like a spud boy thirty years ago have to do with Jerry having something on his head sillier than the New Traditionalists wig?
@epsteinsmutha1 Jerry's obvious vanity is a commentary on today's America. Same as Devo has always done, it will take most people 12 to 15 years to understand it
THE 1970S???????? damm the 1990s are now looking good , forget the 1980s :) but the 1970s??? thats ancient cultural history , DEVO STILL TEACHING US , DEVOLUTION
Or instead of necessarily writing and producing the music for them, mentoring them in a Mutt Lang or Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis fashion would be far better. With the crash of the Music Industry, they may need to work outside the Unions. They helped crash the music industry, because soon groups like TLC were becoming slaves to contracts, and many didn't overcome, they just went home. People forget the Bery Gordy Jr. MoTown model can still work - music out of a garage, not overly polished.
In the VOID of any real music, there is a real market for early 80's music, but I think more of these classic bands would have more success, not just in coming out with new music, but building up in inventory of current bands who share their vision and help promote them. Youth speaks to Youth, and while Milli Vanilli failed because of lip syncing, the idea of a middle aged band writing music and having younger musicians and singers take the stage still works.
Devo, probably one of the most influential bands around and will continue to influence musicians around the world. Great clip, but I want to see the raw interview... 3 mins of interview? Come on!
Devo should never stop writing. I believe they are the sound of the future. Like It or not Devo is a staple of music. They are able to take any topic and put it to music. I believe they are a very cultural and political band with a voice that needs to be heard by the world. I couldn't have made it through school without Devo.. Congratulations Devo.
My friends (DEVO), we WANT to pay for music. It must be GOOD though. I bought this album because a) it is really good, and b) I support DEVO. You guys fricken' ROCK!
@Modified67 Fuck them. We got RAPED for decades, and they DESERVED to be ripped off. It costs literally fifteen cents to manufacture a CD, including the case and liner notes, and they were charging ten times that....fifteen bucks for a CD? Fuck you. Fuck you to DEATH. I am so glad college kids ripped them off literally to DEATH with T-one lines and Napster, they richly deserved to be fucked over in revenge for fucking us all for so long. I still have my Columbia House LPs, stolen! Fuck you!
@TheBearcat222 Dude. Why the hate? *I* didn't rip you off. It was the record labels. DEVO didn't rip you off. They got fucked by the record labels too. Just because I choose to support a band and you don't, that doesn't make me a bad person and certainly doesn't make me worthy of your enmity. You should direct your anger at those who deserve it, the record labels. In hating them, we have a common enemy; one I can join you in saying "F-you!"
@Modified67 As I said, Fuck "them", not fuck you. Fuck the record labels, and fuck Devo for whining about it. Did they spend their cash building a recording studio and creating their own label, the way Prince did? No. They made a bad choice, and paid for it. Tough shit. It would take maybe 20 more years of stealing music to make up for how they ripped us all off over the price of LPs, cassettes and CDs.
@TheBearcat222 You are forgetting a key ingredient to determining costs: the effort on the part of the person producing the product. Saying that you're being ripped off because the media is cheap to make is like saying that, if you already have the materials, a builder should make you a house for free.
But it's still bull**** that no one wants to pay for music. People with no taste in music don't wanna pay for music. But if you make quality music that people who like real music likes they wanna pay for real music:)
I love that there remains a genuine honesty and fresh mystique about Devo - that they're vital and relevant (and red hot live). Our local Australian tabloid - The Courier Mail - prove that mainstream stupidity persists among those who've never bothered to look beyond Devo's imposing fashions and catchy riffs. In their 3rd Sept '10 scandal column the CM accuse Devo of being "unabashed sell-outs". The got the unabashed part right, but Devo are shining lights in the art of surviving with integrity.
@RedPortiaOne Its not over yet.......people are still getting stupid"er"...and will get treated as such untill we stop buying stuff ..developement through pushing the limits of ones wallet has to stop....
@mickeygtx I agree. Mark and Jerry are social geniuses IMO because the concelp of De Evolution was created 30 + years ago. And actually happened socially, globally and in to many other ways to list here. In 1979 when I first fell in love with Devo a friend of my dads told me Devo are idiots and dont know how to create mucic and De Evolution was stupidity. After a decade he admitted to me he was wrong and that Devo were visionaries, and still are to this day
Still think they need to be in the Rock Hall. Sign the petition at RockSnubs (dot) com. And also the Museum of modern art!!

Devo are the fathers of new wave and techno.
They had all the newest electronic musical toys before anyone else did and put them all to good use.
Japan should bow to the altar of Devo for influencing one of their most awesome bands and one of my all-time favorites, Polysics!
If you've never seen or heard Polysics, I highly recommend it.
Ignore the language barrier between East and West and take joy in the fact that Devo lives on through these young, fresh acts.
